if you want the 3 ways, go for it... frankly, imo, ANY in ceiling speaker solution isn't going to provide "good sq", no matter how good it is, because positioning a speaker on the ceiling can't do anything other than provide ambient background music...

I think I follow you. But, the 2 in kitchen are single stereo SST ones that pivot and are pointed at the kitchen island. The 3 ways with separate tweeter, mid, and woofer are an upgrade and hoping will be an improvement. Especially when I play older live recordings...

The power amp im using is only 52 watts per channel at 8 ohms, 70 watts per channel at 4 ohms. Maybe with the denon i can ditch that and just use the denon to power zone 2.

I would assume that would make the amp part run all the time. Considering that I only use my zone 2 occasionally, I will run a couple of rcas from my tivo and bluray player and just use it as zone 2 while in preamp mode. that will also sound better since the sound will be downmixed to stereo vs playing the fronts on a 5 or a 7.1 signal which would miss the dialog.

The amp part is going to run all the time anyway, regardless of whether you use "preamp" mode or not (as has often been discussed in this thread). However, using Front B, you are limited to the same source selected in the main zone while using Zone 2 you can use an independent source/volume.

So in other words, when you said that zone 2 was "useless" for you what you meant was that it's exactly what you needed?

^^^ Well, it has the advantage of playing stereo but on the other hand it is a little bit more work (and wires) to set up. I should have some impressive looking connections when I am done!

You can adjust zone 2 volume from receiver??

Yup ... unlike the Zone 2 models below the 2312CI which only support a "fixed" Zone 2 volume, the Zone 2 volume on the 4311CI can be set to "variable" or "fixed". See p. 103 (Volume Level).

your money... however, given the "advice" your advisor has given you so far, i would spend some time in the speaker forums here and see what other suggestions you might get...

you are never using anywhere close to that in terms of power... unless you are playing them at literally ear shattering volumes...

Can the 4311CI take the HDMI output from a Blu-Ray player and downconvert the video so it can be output via S-Video to a CRT TV?

Thanks!

Unfortunately not. HDMI signals cannot be converted into analog signals.

I'm not sure that any AVR can do that.

No, due to HDCP requirements, AVRs are not allowed to do this conversion; however, there are 3rd party HDMI-->analog converters on the market you can use including the one below ...

Well, I gambled and lost. The 4311 I received is not outputting any sound from the speakers. Not even during Test Tone attempts. Talk about luck... I will work on a replacement... Oh and I did try the reset in the manual.

Unplug the AVR for about 10 minutes, then try doing a "network" reset (ie. press/hold UP/DOWN arrow buttons below the front flap while powering on the AVR and hold for at least 4-5 seconds before releasing, similar to regular microprocessor reset).

Still no luck. Tried it twice. I get a weird clicking in the speakers when I increase or decrease volume.

Yeh .... not a good sign. Return to sender.

Hoping for a replacement Mondayish... I have to admit as many Receivers as I get I have never had one do this. It's cool though.
At least I was able to get it to say it had the latest firmware installed.

Yeah, that sucks big time. Hope you get a good replacement soon. Good luck!

I am sure you will make out Ok Joerod.

when is the upgrade to the 4311 coming out? has anyone heard?
I posted this before but I'll try again, my 4311CI doesn't let my Samsung pdp audio/video pass through while it's off via Hdmi. ( meaning the 4311 has to be on to watch TV ) Were it wasn't any trouble with my old Pioneer pdp. I've changed my hdmi cable, and double check the 4311 menu to see if anything has changed with luck.

If anyone has any idea, I'm game.

Thanks

Did you try setting Anynet+ to OFF?

The 4520CI is expected to be released in Sep (CEDIA), with it's feature set to be announced later this summer.

Just to clarify, there is no "upgrade" for the 4311, other than Airplay FW update. jd provided info on the next high-level Denon model in his post above but I sure hope they don't stop making this one any time soon. There is nothing that can match this feature set for anything close to this price.

I think so, I'll double check though. Thanks

cool thanks, might as well wait for updates I guess. Though I am digging the 4311. Except any reference to the cheesy apple company and real music appreciation.....yuk

Hi guys. Just got my new 4311 and loving it so far. I was wondering if I could get some advice/help on the best way to input music from my computer to the Denon.

The main issue is that the computer is not setup as a true HTPC in that it has low end (integrated) video and sound capability. I would like some advice about getting the highest quality sound from my ALAC files stored on the PC to the 4311. My options are

1) HDMI out from my low end integrated (on the motherboard) PC

2) Optical out from same low end integrated on the PC

3) USB out to an asynchronous USB DAC. This is very noobish of me, but I don't know where this would input into the 4311 and whether it would defeat the purpose by re-processing what the USB DAC has already done, hopefully at a higher quality level than the Denon's DAC.

4) Buy a new, better sound card. Does this gain anything if I am using the Denon's DAC anyway? Will this permit 'purer' output or can even a simple integrated sound card do ok with bitstream out?

5) Streaming via airplay. I love that feature but don't know what I might be losing in SQ.

Thanks for any thoughts. I've mainly been using the Denon so far through MOG streamed from my iphone and it sounds pretty good even with the 320kbps. But as I transfer my CDs to lossless onto the computer I want it to sound even better of course.

The best solution is Airplay... for both ease of use and sound quality.
