The "Official" Denon AVR-4311CI/AVR-A100 thread [NO PRICE TALK] - Page 570

Can I just say - Audyssey XT32 is the schnizzel! I never took it seriously before (although I never had XT32 or studied jdsmoothie's FAQ), but despite the fact that my eD sub is a POS my system sounds better than ever before - night and day difference, my wife could hear it from the kitchen, all that crap. Seriously, after tuning myself I thought things sounded pretty good, but afterwards the change blew me away.

Can't wait to get the new speakers and do it all again.

So far the 4311 has been the most fun, satisfying electronic purchase I've made in a long time. I'm kind of bummed that the tweaking will soon end and I'll leave it alone (or not).

You're telling me you'd rather deal with the hassle of changing an a/b speaker switch every time you want to use zone 2 than simply spending $50-$100 on a 2ch amp or stereo receiver? Or if you want a free solution, repurpose 2 channels of your 7ch amp for zone 2 and use the 4311 to power 4 surrounds & 2 heights.

The final option is to add 4 more amp channels to main zone and go full preamp mode, in which case you can repurpose 4 amps in the 4311 for zone 2/3.

So after deciding on buying another amp I hit another snag...AirPlay hijacks both the main zone and zone 2. I was planning on using AirPlay for outside content while still being able to have the main zone do my theatre. I guess now I have to invest in an apple tv or something and have it be another source?

Just confirming in case I read wrong, Airplay cannot stream video

Only Apple products can support Airplay video.

^^^ When I had Boxee Box it used to support video

I'm trying to get that information from Denon now ... as well as if it's been discontinued.

Denon reports that sufficient quantities of the 4311CI will remain in inventory at least until the 4520CI is released in Sep.

Correct. Although this issue has been resolved on the new XX13 models, for the 4311CI, you will need to buy either an ATV or Airport Express as an external source which then bypasses that limitation.

You are right, technically. However I understand this to be an "unlicensed" use of Airplay. In other words, if you want to advertised Airplay feature on your product, it is limited to audio only.

That is encouraging news.

Which sounds like the production may have ended, even though it is not a discontinued catalog item.

I agree, kind of like the AVP/POA/5308CI. The chipsets the AVP/5308CI uses are long out of production, so Denon must not mind sitting on a good bit of completed inventory. Same may apply to the 4810CI?

It is worth noting, all of these units are made in Denon's Japan factory. I imagine the Inkel/Sherwood factory in China is more of a 'churn and burn' operation with more just-in-time inventory.

So if airport express is hooked up as a source, when I use an iPod touch and click the airplay button I will see two choices the Denon and the airport express unit. If I choose AE I can then play the iPod source through zone 2 and a movie in the main zone?

HELP!!! My Direc TV box is hooked up to my TV through the 4311. Lately when I change channels on the Direc TV the 4311 makes a loud clicking sound. It seems like the DSP or the switcher is doing this when it receives the audio feed. Any ideas?

It is set to output Dolby. I have had this setup since I bought the 4311 last year but this clicking sound started recently.

most likely you are hearing a relay click due to a change in speaker configuration, for example going from "A" to "B" front speakers, changing from "height" to "surr.back" speakers if they share the same amp channels, etc.

What is likely happening is you hear the click when you change from a 2ch audio feed to a channel broadcasting in 5.1, and you are using different surround modes for the different input signal types.

can you:

1. describe your speaker layout (e.g. 5.1, 5.1 + heights, etc? and zone 2/3 speakers?) and have there been any changes recently in your layout?
2. find a channel change that will induce the "click" repeatably and watch the front panel display when you change channels. What's happening to the input signal, surround mode, output channels, etc?

Hey Batpig,

I have a simple 5.1 configuration with Def Tech front and middle speakers and two ceiling mounted speakers as the rears. There is no Zone 2 because I could not figure out how to connect Zone 2 to the whole house external amp.

I just switched channels between 2 HBO HD channels on Direc TV receiver with Dolby Digital being broadcast on both and at first the display on 4311 showed PLII Cinema, then it went to Multi Channel Stereo before finally settling on Dolby Digital with a click. The input says on Cable/Sat. Seems like it clicks when going through the Multi Ch to Dolby Dig.

Anyone else having EE kissing their ass now since they know they over sold (read LIED) to several of us about availability and are having to wait to get more in stock. Any other authorized dealers out there matching the price?

Funny, I went to the deal thread and saw you asking technical issues that probably belonged here.

The problem is the service _airplay._ versus the marketing driven name Airplay. Although Apple and its licensees are now calling remote speaker service Airplay it's not -- it's still raop (like an Airport Express) rather than airplay (like an ATV2 or ATV3).

Congrats! Curious how close your MLP is to main speakers?

Yes, with pro you can apply different +/- 3db edits to a single target curve for each individual channel.

My 4311 is now over a year old and still running on the 'out of box' firmware so I figure I should probably update it..... Had a couple of glitchs on audio with a recent movie (confirmed it's not the disc)

Now I'm basically what could be described as network incompetent so I was wondering if this would work.

I have a modem router in the office with 4 LAN ports on the back, this stays permenantly active and connected to the interweb and any computer I plug into it is instantly on the net.

Would I just be able to get a suitably long Cat5e or Cat6 'patch' lead (probably around 20 metres) and plug that into the Denon and the modem?

There is Wifi also, but judging from the signal strength showing on the laptop when down in the media room, I'd rather not chance using that.....

Cheers

So does anyone know for sure if the 4311ci will pass through a 4k signal via HDMI?

Edit: I found it, but I just can't find anything "official" on their site that says it.

I'm about 14 ft from the front speakers

Yes that will work.
