Hi, JD: Thanks for this update; I am very disappointed with Denon if this is correct. On the face of it, it gives the appearance that Denon doesn't care about owners of "last year's" products since the 4311 is no longer a current model for sale by Denon. It seems their focus is directed towards selling us their latest product rather than spending resources on fixing something that has already been sold. Such an approach lends credence to the phrase "planned obsolescence", but, at least for me, does not engender much brand loyalty since any such loyalty isn't rewarded by support after the sale.mad.gif

If it makes you feel any better the issue effects xx12 and x13 models too. Actually that probably doesn't make you feel any better. tongue.gif

A very few older, hi-end processors addressed this very issue by offering what is called Surr A and Surr B. It allowed you to run two different sets of surrounds switchable at the touch of a button. Each had their specific Audyssey EQ. AFAIK it was last available in the AVR 4310 and has been dropped from all more current models. They even remove that option from the AVPA1 flagship when the XT32 upgrade is done in favor of 11.2.

There is no easy solution for you. As MC music is more important to me than film, I use monopole surrounds at about 105, placed just above ear level as a compromise. It's great for music and works quite well for film, partly because I use DSX wides for film-they fill in the surround bubble nicely while expanding the front soundstage apparent depth and width. Surr backs are not practical for me as I sit so close to the back wall.

Here's a photo that gives you an idea of my setup. The Human Touch Zero Gravity black leather recliner is MLP.

The 100-120 deg range in ITU-R BS.775-2 is the compromise solution, devised back in the day before 7.1 was contemplated.

What would be idea would be to have a set of speakers for each. It took a while to get there, but 7.1 is now well entrenched. If you already have a 7.1 setup, the first choice would be to use it in 7.1 mode whenever 5.1 content is being played. Perhaps you've tried PLIIx and do not like it for some reason?

Thank you both very much for your help and suggestions. I believe my previous AVR had the Surr A and Surr B option but, back then, I wasn't interest in MC audio, only 2-channel. I will give PLIIx a try with the audio. I recently started using it for video but have not tried it with audio yet. Beyond that, looks like my only other option is to go without the current surrounds and make the surround backs my surrounds. Or buy a new house. Or, even better, buy more speakers. smile.gif
Thanks again guys!

Just tried this right now. Started up Pandora and it automatically started playing the last station I had been playing before. But with the Internet Radio interface. Hit left arrow twice to back out, restarted Pandora, all is well.

Similar thing with Internet Radio, but it's a bit goofier. When I select Internet Radio it starts playing my last Pandora station again. I can then hit left once to back out to the main Internet Radio menu and select stations normally.

Each way, once I back out and redo it it works fine going forward, but it seems like getting one working screws the other one up. It's like they are having some weird back channel relationship or something tongue.gif

Try it, no dice for me mad.gif

Just an fyi, I paid less than that (pretax) for a NIB unit from an authorized dealer just a couple weeks ago.

Thankfully there are soo many other ways to stream Pandora. I have never even needed to use the built in reciver method. Never wanted to either as I pay for a subscription to Pandora and want to use a streamer that will give me access to the higher res audio that paying for Pandora gets you. In my house we stream Pandora from our iPhones/iPads/iPods/PCs/Macs via AirPlay, Squeeze Box Touches, rokus, oppo, heck it can even be streamed from the internet browser on the PS3. So Im not at all bothered if Denon never gets the Pandora thing right in their receivers, Thats the least of the reasons I bought it.

I use the free Pandora, not the subscription service, but my understanding was that the higher resolution audio of the pay service was NOT available on any of the devices you mention (I have two Roku's and an Oppo), but rather only over a computer. It seems if the higher resolution audio was available on those other devices, it would also be available on the Denon, but it is not(when it is working properly).confused.gif

It is when using an iOS device and streaming via AirPlay as far as I can tell, but yes the other devices it is not. However my point was to emphasis there are many other options out there and most have more than one way to do it, so use another if one isn't working well or to your expectations.

If I enable 24fps output on my PS3 and have my TV set to 96Hz for 24p sources (65VT50) will the Denon pass this signal through unperturbed?

^Your enthusiasm is underwhelming. biggrin.gif
I glanced at the 1008 specs-its biggest weakness right off the bat is the far less powerful DSP room correction offered by the Audyssey MultEQ it has on board.

The 4311 is an audipophile AVR with MultEQXT32, two steps up.

I'm interested in this avr being I'm looking for a new avr between $1000-$2000. The 3311 doesn't have what I want so hopefully this will, but I doubt it. I'll probably stick with my thinking of getting the Onkyo 1008, but I'd much rather get a Denon.ipad
Call Mike at AVS and get a Denon AVR-4520CI. From what I've heard the AVS price should be within your budget.

Don't get the Onkyo 1008 -- it's two generations old. However, if you're dead-set on an Onkyo, I'll gladly sell you my Onkyo 5008 (with an extended warranty to boot) for $2K then I'll give Mike at AVS a call! biggrin.gif

Did anyone else get prompted for new firmware? Release notes?
If anyone is having success playing music from either a thumb drive or external hard drive off the front USB port, can you let me know the specific brand/model you are using to store your files? I haven't had any luck connecting to a 2TB external hard drive or a thumb drive. The MP3 player that was connecting some of the time has now decided to stop turning on, so that is a no go as well.

There is a note on page 22 of the owners manual that says Denon does not guarantee that all USB memory devices will operate or receive power. Rather than take my chances when purchasing a new thumb drive, I thought I'd ask to see if there is one brand that seems to be working well for everyone.

Had you installed the one that was released in Dec for the Pandora fix?

I couldn't use my 2TB hard drive either and if I remember correctly it was because it was formatted in FAT32 and I would have had to change it to the other format in order to get to read through the 4311ci. (or reversed)

According to the manual (page 48), the 4311 is compatible with memory devices in FAT16 or FAT32 format.

FYI-My parents grew up in Pittsfield and I lived there in my early years. Your weather forecast for today is why I now live in Houston. smile.gif

Some of you may have seen the email blast yesterday, but Denon is offering factory refurb A100's for $1350 with free shipping, after a 10% coupon DENON10.

I did. But it's a refurb for one, and for two since the A100 doesn't offer anything worth paying more for I see no reason to pay a premium for it, and three they are still asking too much.

Not SoM but I believe the lower LFE level was in reference to using the DSD setting when listening to SACDs.

Is it better to use the DSD setting or not use it? What is the best way to set up for listening to SACD. I have my 2930ci hooked up to my 4311ci with DenonLink 3. I also have an option for HDMI which I use for DVD-A.

I do not have the 2930 so I'm not sure if there is a -10dB LFE bug when using DL3. I did extensive DSD to PCM comparisons and I did not hear any SQ differences between the two settings. If you are listening to multichannel SACDs then DSD Direct isn't the best setting IMO. I just leave my Oppo 103 set to PCM and all stereo and MCH SACDs sound excellent. If you do a "DSD" search in this sub forum you will find a number of threads discussing the DSD or PCM topic.

Anyone here use the network feature of the 4311ci to control the receiver with apps like iRule or Roomie Remote?

I'm using it and it seems like whenever I try to turn on my AVR with an activity (Play PS3 which turns it on, puts it in BD mode, and sets video to game mode) that none of these commands go through. I do have my AVR in stand by mode too. Then if I try to do it a 2nd time like 15 seconds later it seems to turn on the AVR.

Anyone seen any issues like this?

In the AVR network settings, do you have it set for "Network On in Standby Mode"?  Otherwise, the AVR won't wake up.
