speaker suggestions for apartment for < $300

Hey all,

I'm thinking about upgrading my speakers this fall and although I've done some research I'd like more input.

For an apartment in NYC (about 300 sq. feet), would floor standing speakers be unnecessary as opposed to bookshelf?

As far as how I will be using my speakers: Most of the listening will be for music rather than for movies and tv. I want speakers that will be good for listening to bands like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, but also be able to provide solid and rich bass for dubstep and other bass-oriented dance genres.

I will mostly be playing the music out of iTunes on my laptop or an ipod, in case that's relevant.

I've heard good things about the Polk Audio Monitor speakers, what do you all think of these? Which models would suit my needs?

Lastly, does anybody who lives in Manhattan know what stores have speakers I can listen to and help decide for myself?

Thank you so much for any suggestions or advice that you have.

Since you seem to have a focus on Music I would recommend the Polk Monitor 70's or Infinity Primus P362's.

Being in NYC there are plenty of high end audio stores

For an apartment you're probably better off with near full range towers than with a bookshelf/subwoofer system. Towers have enough bass for most music without the deep room shaking bass that will tick off neighbors.

My normal choice would be Infinity Primus P362 towers but they are discontinued and the bargains are gone. You still may be able to find a sale on Polk Monitor 70 towers. About once a month they go on sale at Newegg.com for $150 each shipped. They're a bit bright for my taste but you're on a tight budget. Keep your eyes peeled on deal sites for coupon codes.

If you can squeeze a little more the HTD (htd.com) level two towers is worth looking
into. They will pay return shipping if you don't like them. They are quite musical. The
cheaper Polks are more for movies than music. Don't let the HTD name fool you.

They only pay return shipping on bookshelf, center channel and in wall speakers. Not towers.

If this is your first purchase with HTD and you are not 100% thrilled with our speakers, call us and we'll even send you prepaid UPS shipping labels to return the speakers to us (excludes shipments to/from Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and APOs and is limited to two pair of bookshelf or in-wall speakers, one center channel speaker, and one powered subwoofer -we will not pay the return freight for Tower Speakers).

Jamo makes a nice set of towers in your price range. But you'd probably have to go down to Philly to audition them.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming. If I end up going with any of these floorstanding speakers, do I need to buy something else to use them (like an amp or something) or can I just plug an iPod into the speakers and listen that way? If I need something else, what would you recommend? I'm on a budget, so something relatively cheap but is great value.

You need a receiver - go to someplace like Best Buy and check the entry
level receivers. You can also check on line with places like Crutchfield or
Onecall. I would get a receiver that is at least 80 watts. Good Luck.

I made this same suggestion for another user. I would consider getting the Gizmo v1.0M / WAF-1 Package for $234 (shipped), on sale from $309, it's a little more but it's worth it. These speakers look good too. The little amp that comes with it has a Sub-input so you can add a sub. You can use an RCA cable to connect the ipod to the Gizmo amp.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to follow up on how my speaker-buying went. After lots of research, I narrowed it down to the Polk RTI-A1s and and TSi200s, and after trying them both out at the store, I have to say that the TSi200s blew the RTi's out of the water. I compared the TSi200s to models by companies like Klipsch just to see, but for the $300 price tag, these speakers seem unbeatable. Anyone investing in speakers for an apartment and is looking for getting the best value really needs to consider these guys. You can hear every layer of music so perfectly and cleanly, and... I just can't say enough good things about them.

That is the key -you went to audition and listened. You bought
what you liked and you are satisfied. This is what it's about. Enjoy!
