What are you going on about? The website clearly shows a 30 day money back no questions asked satisfaction guarantee. I.e., if you don't like it for any reason you can return it as long as it's within 30 days.

A wife not liking the size of the sub is a perfectly valid reason to return it, given one can not see the sub in person unless you order it and ship it.

They do this to be competitive and actually sell product TO stay in business given all the other ID companies do the same.

If you guys couldn't tell, I was actually kinda bummed to have to post that the wife didn't like the sub just because of it's size. Truthfully, the wife knew the size of the sub before I ordered it. Unfortunately, until you she got the sub in the room, she didn't come up with the idea to get a bigger sub to use as an end table. To be perfectly honest, I don't know what goes on inside women's heads, let alone my own wife's!

Understood.

I remember posting something similar when someone returned an SVS Ultra just because they didn't like the finish. It kinda leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

So - give us your overall opinion of the sub as compared to other subs costing more

I already did. But basically up to the sub's limits it performs great. At that point it just simply stops getting any louder instead of sh1tt1ng all over itself.

On my system, it performs great all the way up to -10 MV with SPLs of 103-104 dB. My living room is open to almost the entire first floor of my house. That probably equates to ~1000 sq ft, OIOW, a very large space.

If those SPLs are enough for someone, they could easily add 6 dB buy purchasing a second sub. Or, to even out your in-room FR you could separate the two and add 3-4 dB of output. That, IMHO, is better than a single larger sub.

So - what about 4 of the lava 12" subs in a 1600 cubic foot living room (16'Lx13'W'x7'8"H) in an apt - the room has open doorways to a kitchen and dining room and an open hallway leading to the bedrooms

2 in the front (either stacked or next to the bookshelf speakers) and 2 next to the surround speakers or stacked next to one of the surrounds in a 5.1 set-up

For that kinda $ you have lots of options.

Like you, we have bookshelf speakers in our living room...

Fronts - Def Tech SM450 x 2
Center - Def Tech CLR2002
Surround and Surround Backs - Polk rc80i in-ceiling speakers

For the longest time I was perfectly content with this setup because I have my *real* setup in the man cave. It took me a long time to convince my wife to get a sub for the living room. She doesn't care what I do down in the basement because that's my area, but in the living room she really doesn't want a sub.

IMO, an Epik Empire is total overkill for that area. The Lava LSP12 perfectly *matches* the rest of the system. For a bachelor pad, duals would be kinda cool.

You might look at dual Epik Legends, or one of the many other *slightly larger* subs. If you do decide to get an LSP12, then I suggest getting one to start off with...

That said, I wonder how quad LSP12s would stack up (pun intended) to an Empire. Hmmm....

Thank you for your review, counsil.
Would you mind telling me what the surround is made of?. Living in humid Hawaii, I have lost the foam surround on two subwoofers after just 3-4 years.

Eek! Out of curiosity, what were those subs?

My Epik Empires' surrounds look, and somewhat *feel*, like foam.

The Lava sub's surround looks and feels like rubber. I would almost classify the woofer as high excursion.

Thanks!

This looks very tempting. Here in Hawaii, shipping is the killer. We do have a Drop Ship service that does help considerably.

How did I miss this post? I like your thinking Chris!!!

While I like free stuff as much as anyone, I think that it's always a bad idea for a company to give anything, beyond a loaner or really good service, to a reviewer, pro or not.

Although I was only kidding, I never thought of that. That makes total sense.

Hey Eric (lavasubs),

When you guys called me the other day regarding the UPS damage, I noticed that TruAudio came up on my caller ID. After researching TruAudio a bit on the Internet, I found some industry leading guys behind the company. Am I correct? Can you tell us some more about Lava Subs, it's founder(s), etc?

doug.
I agree that giving away free stuff to a professional reviewer is a bad idea. Conflict of interest and all that... In this case, the sub got dinged by UPS so there's the cost of repairing it and then it's B-stock. Not worth bothering with for this amount of money if you ask me.

As far as going out of business for giving away free services or stuff to clients goes, this happens all the time. It's great for business. I've always done it with my business and it comes back ten-fold. The trick is knowing when to do it and at what level.

I agree. Lava may want to do something similar to what Polk does. Have a loaner sub that is sent from reviewer to reviewer.

Chris

+1, The thread read like a disaster at the start. The guy from Lava definite didnt say much or argue (kuddos for that).

Someone buying it and reviewing it so quickly did make me think, hmmmmm.....but still its a review and it might sell many more then if the thread went no where.

Funny enough, if you go to TruAudio's website>products>subwoofers....guess what shows up? Lava's line of subs without the Lava logo on them yet.

Nice find..I never get why people private label any product to compete against the same product already being offered

Interesting. I didn't see that the other day.

I wonder why they don't open up the sealed sub line to consumers?

That's the sub I would have liked to demo. I could have gotten two of them, stacked them, and maybe made the wife happy.

Are you listening (reading) Lava Subs (TruAudio)???
