3d blurays, not enough available.

I only see one for retail, cloudy with meatballs. I got the monsters vs alien with the sam kit. But get this, panny kit has TWO movies!! Ice age and coralina 3d. But you can't buy this separately. Why am I hearing that avatar 3d will only be packaged with pannys. If different companies are bringing out different movies with their kits...That would mean, I'd have like 3 different 3 d brands at my house and like 12 pairs of different brand shutters.

A third company needs to bring out a shutter that will read the infrared signals of all 3d emitters, that shouldn't be hard to do.

Fox announced back in April that there would be no 3D BD Avatar until "sometime in 2011." You must have missed that announcement huh?

I think it's been pretty clear that a lot of people didn't know what they were getting into. First time EA'ers or they simply didn't use any due diligence before buying...or both maybe. I've seen too many people say "I just got my TV, but....where's the 3-D content?!" LOL.

Pros and cons to that. If they release avatar 3d, Id be willing to shell out... Let's say $60 for it right now. I can understand why companies are sooooo cautious of new format and investing in it upfront. Remember toshiba and HD-DVD. They put out so much content before people even had HD capability or HD TVS for that matter. And there aren't a lot of 3d set out there now, so discs won't be moving for a while. But enthusiasts like myself willing to pay higher for earlier and sooner release. I think that will be profit margin there, charge more for fewer sales now, bring the price down later when there's a lot more volume ready to move in 6 months. There shouldn't be so much risk since 3d format has been finalized since 2009.

Imagine if there were HD-DVD 3d on top of all this.

The big risk may be passive 3d, I heard some company had a passive 3d screen this years electronics expo. And nintendo ds3 is a passive 3d screen. We may all be saying, what the he'll do we do with all these 200$ glasses!!!!!!! Lol

Its all about costs and returns.

Panasonic is likely pumping a lot of cash into avatars 3d release; this make it worth fox financially. If they released avatar as general then theyd likely not make the revenue back theyre looking for.

I think the ps3 firmware update will really start to open the 3d floodgates... installed user base jumps massively overnight and can make revenue sense to companies like fox.

Not entirely true - yes about PS3, but people would also need a new 3D TV - and I'm waiting for Christmas sales, personally

No i am not..Not at all...I am always a frist in line guy...I pay,, i wait, i play,
I totally get it...I am NOT in rush for content...When it comes out thats great...I Give a rats ass when new content comes out..Sure it looks neat .But i am not a nut job waiting on every whim that hits the internet of 3d content to have it...I always pay for new tech when it comes out..That the price of being the first kid on the block with the new toy..SEE I DIDNT MISS THE POINT DUDE...

True, Pretty sure recent reports showed 1.1m 3d tvs sold... doubt there are that many blu-rays... its just one less thing to buy and people who didnt want to pay for a new machine now have 3d, pretty good, sure those people would pick up a movie or two... i think this is the biggest event for 3d since launch.

Does anyone know how the BD distribution mechanism works--do the studios actually produce the BDs, or do they license the content to 3rd parties who produce the BDs?

Depends.

Studios like WB, Universal, Fox, Disney, etc comission their own transfers using their films with companies like Technicolor, Panasonic or Sony who do the encoding and compression and the authoring (menus, subtitles, etc) and then go to a disc replicator like Technicolor or Sony DADC

But a company like IMAX licenses their films to a distribution company who then acts like a studio to prepare them for retail.

I got this 3D Sony set and practically nothing to watch in 3D besides some kids cartoons and 1 3D ch on Direct TV. Is this 3D thing just another gimmick? BTW I am very happy with 2D on this tv set, but really what should we expect from 3D? Simulated 3D looks OK, but that is not 3D we paid for. Does this technology having any future?

It's very simple. Look at the topics 'stuck' to the top of this forum. They cover everything known that is coming in 3D on broadcast, BD, gaming, and in theaters.

You would have said the same thing when HDTV's were initially being sold. All the content there was to watch was OTA PBS shows. No HD discs at all. There were DTheater VHS tapes a few years later.

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D is going to release on Blu-ray 3D the same day as the 2D release.

I can't wait for Piranha 3D! I loved that movie! The director's cut is going to be insane (15 minutes of additional footage!).

If you had a PS3, you'd have a little more content, not only that, interactive content. I highly recommend Motor Storm 3D for $9.99. That thing blows you away. I don't know if you play much games, but if you download the 3D trailer for PS3 some of the games coming out for PS3 in 3D look pretty amazing. That should be the edge over Xbox Kinetic, motion sensor and 3D!

Other than that more Bluray 3D are out in the "packages" for Samsung i.e. (and Panasonic) How to train your dragon and Nature disc for Samsung and Coraline and Ice Age for Panny.

Too bad they don't sell those individually, I've already have 3 glasses and 2 movies for $349 isn't worth it.

I guess we'll all have to wait until November!!

FYI, if you want infinite 3D content, just make your OWN!!! There's an affordable Fujifilm 3D camera with 3D video capability. It's on sale via Amazon for like $500. The Panny 3D video is like $1300??!?
