Talk me out of the Panasonic TC-42PX24

Currently just under 5 big ones at a local club store. I'm not all that thrilled with the picture I see there, but it's OK and plasma is what I want. Saw a Samsung plasma even cheaper at a big box retailer but really wasn't impressed. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.

Viewing distance = 6-10ft currently. The wall where it would go could sport a 50", just barely, but 42" or 46" is what I've been looking at for a better price/utility compromise.

And online I'm seeing last year's G10, S1 and the S2 42" all for around 150 bones more than the PX model I mentioned. Actually, the difference would be a little less since I'd have to pay tax on the local purchase. I'm assuming the G10 would give the best picture due to Infinite Black, but that any S model is a bigger quality improvement over the PX than going from S to G. Yes? But I'm getting ahead of myself here again.

Sources would be SD or HD via over the air or SD (but "good" SD) from AppleTV, DVD. Later, it would be HD from the AppleTV or Blu-Ray.

My gut tells me that with my less-than-great sources (HD from OTA excepted) than the lesser, PX model would be fine but that once I got more HD I'd wish I'd sprung for one of the better models mentioned.

I had a 46" in mind for the intended location but when comparing like-quality TVs it seems there's still a $150 or so price premium for them, which places them completely out of reach. The $650 or so for the G10/S 42" models is already pushing it. I know I could get the 50" PX model for similar money but am not interested in that one if I ever go that big.

And it won't kill us to wait until say, Black Friday.

The TC-42PX24 seems to be a better choice than the C series because of the anti-reflective filter. But recently it has been reported that you can get the larger TC-50PX24 for only $549. It is generally accepted on these forums that larger is better.

Understood. And yes, that TV also tempts. But one concern about the TC-50PX24 is that it still offers only 1024x768 resolution. Not as much of an issue on a 42". I don't necessarily "need" 1080p on a 42" but on a 50", particularly when viewing at the closer end of acceptable range, gives me pause.

I think that if I was reliably going to sit further back from the TV, the 50PX24 would be an easier choice for sure.

My instinct still tells me that in my situation (if talking about similar money, and the 50" is usually closer to the $619 price than it is $549) to get a smaller TV with a better picture such as an S model or last year's G perhaps.

I prefer the shiny black paint finish on the px24 in the front over the s2. I know that isn't the most important thing but I like my tv to look stunning. I bought a px24 and had some buzzing problems when the tv was on more than 2 hours. Not sure if this is normal but I've had some bad luck buying things from Costco. C2 has better reviews than the S2 but I think money is a factor to why they get better ratings. Go with whatever you can afford. Maybe the U2 version might be worth looking at as it has similar reviews to the C2. But they are all rated pretty high. Some think the AR filter takes away from the picture as well.

Fixed my problem. A dimmer with Halogen lights was causing the bad buzz. This tv is too good to be true for only $479. Feels like a $800 tv.
