Despite having painted my ceiling black, and using a flat finish, light from the screen has lit up the ceiling, diminishing the perceived level of contrast to the image.
This has driven me nuts.

I was telling a friend about my troubles, when he offered to give me some material he no longer needed for his own theatre. He said the material would soak up the extra light and really do the trick. This was very exciting to me, and I jumped at the chance to try something he would use in his theatre (much fancier and better equiped than my own).
This weekend I installed it. And I am so blown away.
During dark scenes the black area around the screen is like a black hole, there is no light reflecting. And to prove how much it is, all one needs to do is scan their eyes further back into the room to an area not covered by the material. Night and Day (pun intended)!
Well, now I am excited to learn later this week, maybe in the weekend, what if any impact this heavy material will have on the sound in the room. I will recallibrate and then compare my charts.

(
I have boosted the "brightness" and dropped the "contrast" on this photo after it was taken in order to make it easier to view on a computer screen. My camera does a horrible job of confusing me (okay, I don't know what I'm doing) and it makes a deathly black crush sometimes.)
The Black material extends side to side wall (12ft), and from the front of the theatre back into the room by 54". Very exciting times indeed!!!
