a haunting film, that continues to make me think of it's scenery and sound. It's been a week since I watched it, and I can't stop thinking about it.

The Thin Red Line - Criterion Collection, transfered by 4K technology making for a level of clarity I have rarely seen.

What a wonderful film. It's too bad it was overshadowed by Saving Private Ryan, as it was far superior IMO. Also too bad I didn't see it until years later.

I will also have two or three ceiling panels to catch the LCR 1st point reflections. I plan to continue researching all things before commiting.

I am in the same boat. I decided tonight to finally fix my columns to the wall and just stick with the painted walls for now. Make a final push for completion and then buy the gear to do my own measurements. Finally based on what that tells mw work on the wall treatment or panels.

Fresh new Concept

I am tossing around the idea of adding another seat to the room.

The idea would be to add one more to the rear of the room. Problem is...they the place I bought them from, no longer sells the brand!!! And they were the only supplier in my city ( and Western Canada, as far as I know!?!)

There would be four to the rear, and three in the front. I would pull the middle seat from the front row, and move it to the rear. Then I will slide the front two together to create two seats that are joined. And have the last seat (the new one) placed just off the side, in the front row.

My hope is to find the closest matching arm chair to orginal sets I already own. Or as a friend suggested try something all on it's own, but that does not clash.

Main reason for this idea is we face an issue when another couple comes over to watch a movie with us: two to the front, and two to the back. Who would ever do that in a real theatre!!?!! It's a bit disjointed. This would solve that - adding the fourth rear chair.

A total of seven seating positions.

The rear row would have more than 18 -20 inches space between their head and the side walls. Distance from the rear wall would not change, at 12 inches.

That idea just died!

I went down to the supplier, and learned not only do they not carry my chairs, they instead only have cheap knock-offs!!!

In "A" you can see the stitching has been replaced by ugly contrast stitching. The stitching in different places on the chair, was at times not even straight!!?!!

In "B" you can see the crappy leather workmanship. Just looking at the seams and joints!

I was really disappointed. The crazy thing is they were asking the full price I paid for the origninal chairs!?! Looks like they couldn't sell those, and have marked them down.

I will not be proceeding forward with adding another chair. Maybe the boss will let me direct those funds towards the new amp idea?

Here's to dreaming big! Cheers!!!

A very good friend of mine who shares this love for all things Audio and Video, gave me a beautiful gift to start 2011. I was gifted a roll of Duracoustic 8, and more than a dozen meters of light absorbant fabric...Top Quality home theatre supply.

http://www.acoustiguard.com/duracoustic/ ...some helpful info

I have not yet planned where to integrate this roll, but I have several ideas. Anyone else have any ideas, please feel free to share!

How good does the light absorbing fabric work? Was it purchased in Edmonton?

I have been looking for something and have tried a number of samples. I have not found anything that I have been satisfied with.

If your free on Saturday early afternoon, why don't you drop by and we will find out. I have not experimented yet, but the choice of fabric is most likely high end and specified for Home Theatre application. He has the name of the supplier here in town. I'll ask for it.

Using a flash on the camera.

(The lovely Mrs. Zuluwalker)

Amazing preformance even with full image, though it's best on the 2.40 bars in movies or edges of the screen/image.

No flash, but the material eats up all the light.

My use for this material is for the ceiling area above the screen, to cut out all reflections and increase preceived contrast.

I purchased the fabric from Accent Window Care in Edmonton - (780) 944-1728. The person I dealt with was a very nice lady named Francois. I am sure if you mention my name (Derrick) ... she will remember the fabric since I have ordered it a couple of times from her. I also had them stitch velcro around the perimeter of each piece.

I am running an experiment.

I have three subs in the room right now. And it took me two days to get the third one intergrated. I am sure it can be made to align better yet with the already present accoustics, but my oh my, what wonderful bass!

Sub #1, 12"

Sub #2, 8"

Sub #3, 12"

I point my subs out to the corners of the room and find I get a really nice even sound, full of impact but sharper and tight.

Just screwing around....

I am laying new lino just outside the theatre room in the hallway. And...I got to talking with Mrs. Zuluwalker, and we chatted about a small bar area with a sink and microwave and fridge. Positioned just outside the theatre for quick access.

So naturally I drew up (anyone who has read this thread before knows, I love to doodle!) a quick sketch to give "shape" to the idea.

Hallway with carpet removed for new lino installation (this weekend???)

Sketch of the new mini kitchen bar...

hahahahahahahaha!
It looks like Picasso was my designer
This sketch will never be worth anything but the value I give it!

A nice project - I think you will be happy to have added this feature.
How deep is this space? Obviously deep enough for a barsink, is there enough room for a compact fridge?

There is enough room based on my current compact fridge, that model is only 18" deep, and the space is 17". So I think the door extending a little past that will be disguised by the cupboard doors, door handles, and counter top?

The wall behind that space is covering a cavity that contains main water lines (hot and cold), and drain pipe. The area is fairly deep and has some play with my design, so I want to place the microwave back and into it partially so as to allow for headroom and visual space when walking down the hall, and or mixing or working at the counter.

Do you have any other suggestions?

* Attachment of the space behind the future bar wall. Photo is the opposite side, and dated from the origninal construction of the theatre room side.

I really enjoyed looking at your project(s). Your thread is awesome, but more of an encyclopedia Very Cool!

I will have to go back and read it again with more detail. Great work, on your bar kitchen looks fantastic!!

Zulu,
Thanks for the kind word - your space is one to be proud of!
I immediatly noticed your japanese sword on the rear wall - and that has refreshed my desire for one of my pursuits:

A number of years back we discovered that my Mothers great, great, grandfather was an officer in the Union army. I was the family member that went to the US archives and got photocopies of all of his official military records from the civil war and put together a formal scrapbook. AND the big break-thru came when I found a 3rd cousin who has his actual engraved officers sword tucked away in safekeeping. I hope someday to be able to display it on my rear wall (well I can hope)

As for your heater kitchenette - good to hear you can squeeze in a beverage fridge. I think you are now good-to-go!

I have added a PC to the gear, and reintroduced my turntable. I am excited by both of these.

The plan goes, build a Juke box music drive with all my music and CD's in Lossless, and then determine if life is better spent on planet earth sane or insane (I have no idea how hard it will be to add all my movies as next course of action).

Lot's of folk talking about it...some swear by it, and other seem disgusted after having wasted countless hours on it. So, who am I to judge till I have walked in their shoes...and so it begins!

Totally awesome looking so good PC tower on the bottom shelf, making my equipment room all that much smarter than before!!!

Despite having painted my ceiling black, and using a flat finish, light from the screen has lit up the ceiling, diminishing the perceived level of contrast to the image.

This has driven me nuts.

I was telling a friend about my troubles, when he offered to give me some material he no longer needed for his own theatre. He said the material would soak up the extra light and really do the trick. This was very exciting to me, and I jumped at the chance to try something he would use in his theatre (much fancier and better equiped than my own).

This weekend I installed it. And I am so blown away.

During dark scenes the black area around the screen is like a black hole, there is no light reflecting. And to prove how much it is, all one needs to do is scan their eyes further back into the room to an area not covered by the material. Night and Day (pun intended)!

Well, now I am excited to learn later this week, maybe in the weekend, what if any impact this heavy material will have on the sound in the room. I will recallibrate and then compare my charts.

(I have boosted the "brightness" and dropped the "contrast" on this photo after it was taken in order to make it easier to view on a computer screen. My camera does a horrible job of confusing me (okay, I don't know what I'm doing) and it makes a deathly black crush sometimes.)

The Black material extends side to side wall (12ft), and from the front of the theatre back into the room by 54". Very exciting times indeed!!!

How did you adhere the material to your ceiling?

I used two Velcro strips to attach it to the ceiling. I am very satisfied with the results. Such a difference in the room, and on the screen.

What is the mystery material in question?

I don't have a name for it, or brand, as it was a gift. But it appears very similar to the second piece of velcro which does not have the hooks, but instead has loops, and then those loops would be slightly fuzzy and scratchy. Terrible description I know. I will try to post a close up of some of the material soon.

I am exploring the idea for Painted night sky mural that glows. I have contacted an Artist who has done some great work and is on AVS. I am really impressed by it (the photos), but also the best part is, the beautiful Mrs.Zuluwalker is really excited by idea of it!

I am looking for more people who are interested in Alberta to come forward and write to him, so he can see if the cost of coming North is worth it. Obviously for one person it is not feasible.

Some items displayed in the theatre room.

With my Samurai sword, Tzun Tzu book, and some other items, I have to say the theme is cool.

I am going to build two Bass traps at the rear of the room, 1/2 wall size.

I am planning to use Roxul, Safe n' Sound, 3" thickness.

I will cut the pieces tonight, then I will build a frame and stretch some black fabric over the frame.

...And if my wife let's me tonight, I would like to run a calibration after I temporarily place the bass traps.

It will be interesting to see the effect of traps on the standing wave charts.

There is a Glee episode and a new episode of The Good Wife on tonight... (This will complicate messing around in the room and making a mess).
