3D bluray ripping

I have the Movie Monsters Vs Aliens on bluray 3D. I don't own a 3D bluray player but that's what the computer is for right? Anyway I tried ripping the bluray and it shows up as 38GB which seems to be correct, but I get a blank screen when trying to play it back. Has anyone attempted this? Here is my setup currently.

Server:
i7 core 920
ati 4850
LG bluray drive

DVDFab V8
Daemon Tools Lite
PowerDVD 10 Mark II

HTPC:
AMD x2 945
ATI 5670

Note: If I play directly from the bluray it will playback, but the monitor on my server isn't 3D so I get the red/cyan looking picture.

Update to this issue. I tried out the AnyDVD program and that actually worked but it put it in a folder format. I use ISO because powerdvd doesn't work with the folder structure. Can AnyDVD output in ISO format or is there another program that can work? Stinks that DVDFAB doesn't work.

I was thinking that maybe Daemon Tools Lite doesn't understand the 3D and doesn't pass the information thru to PowerDVD. Are there any other tools out there that mounts an ISO?

AnyDVD HD can save the copy to ISO. Mine does for regular BluRays.

Hmm...I didn't see an option for this. I really didn't know where to look either. I barely figured out how to get it to rip the folder structure. Where would I find this option?

Right click the AnyDVD icon in the sytem tray, click "Rip to Image...".

Try VirtualCloneDrive.

Thanks, I'll have to try it out and see how it works.

It should be double in size if you ripped to a folder structure. 77GB

It's just files in an image, what you use to mount shouldn't care, it doesn't do anything special.

It sounds like you've got a software problem. Does it play right direct from the disc? Do you have the 3D capable version PowerDVD?

Why is that?

On the disc there is the main movie in 2D (00004.m2ts, 21.48 GB) and the 3D extensions in a seperate file (00005.m2ts, 11.25 GB). Additionally there is a "virtual file" 00004.ssif (32.72 GB). In this file the two streams are interleaved together. This is done by the file system mapping the same data to different files.

If you rip these files to your hard disk, data will be stored twice, thus taking twice the space.

From another forum.

I see that. BR 3D BDMV directory:

Quote:

The “zzzzz.ssif” file is a Stereoscopic Interleaved file that is composed from two BDAV MPEG-2 transport streams. One of the BDAV MPEG-2 transport streams includes an MPEG-4 MVC Base view video stream for left eye or right eye, and the other includes an associated MPEG-4 MVC Dependent view video stream for right eye or left eye respectively. This file is used only when 3D video is played back. The 5-digit number “zzzzz” is the same as the number used for the AV stream file “zzzzz.m2ts” that includes the MPEG-4 MVC Base view video stream.

In the above figure

- 01000.m2ts: Base view stream
- 02000.m2ts: Dependent view stream
- 01000.ssif: Stereoscopic interleaved file

38GB is correct for an ISO rip, 77GB would be correct for a folder structure rip.

Yea, I included at the bottom of the orignal post that I can playback on the disc but not on the ISO. Folder structure works but I'm setup for an ISO playback, plus the whole 38GB vs 77GB storage thing.

Wow, that's pretty craptacular. I'd read the generality of how MVC works, but I just assumed it was one video stream with some different packing (like DTS core+extension), not two entirely separate TS files+File System voodoo.

Alright, wanted to report back. AnyDVD successfully ripped the 3D ISO, where DVDFAB did not. Guess there's another piece of software to buy. Thanks for the help.

But did the 3D playback work? I use AnyDVDHD and Virtual Clone Drive. Virtual Clone Drive is free from Slysoft.

Yes, 3D playback worked. So quite happy right now. I didn't have time to try out the 3D on my 3D TV, but the movie played on my monitor in the red, cyan colors.

Cool. I should be getting my 58" VT25 in a few more days and I hope to try out some 3D movies from my HTPC.

What's the purpose of using the Virtual Drive? How is it different that just putting the ISO on your hard drive?

Okay, here's my situation. I ordered a 3D Blu Ray from the U.K....so it's region B. What do I need to do to make a region A backup? Just AnyDVDHD? Or do I need something else?

In this case the virtual drive is a virtual BD ROM drive and it mounts the ISO image on your HDD and the system sees it as if you put a BD in a physical BD ROM. AnyDVDHD should be all you need to remove the region.

Ah okay, now I understand a virtual drive. Awesome! Thanks!

you still need a phisical blu ray player on your pc to read the disc right?

Yes, you need a physical drive to read the disc in order to rip it. After it is ripped to ISO, you need a virtual drive to load it and present it to windows as if it was a physical disc.

You have an ATI 5670. The 5000 series cant play 3D blu rays. You need an ATI 6000 series card.

Guys, two questions...
  1. If I'm using AnyDVD HD to rip a 3D Blu-ray, should I check the 'Keep Protection' box? If the resulting ISO is intended for playback in an Oppo BD player or burned to a BD-RE for playback in a 3D BD player, does it matter in any way?
  2. Is it possible to rip just the main 3D movie at full res and save it as an ISO? I tried DVDFab, but it only offers two options when doing 50GB to 25GB: convert to 2D, or convert to 3D SBS (but, not full res)
Any ideas? ... at least for #1. From further reading on DVDFab forum at least, it appears #2 isn't as yet possible?
Brajesh on 2# it is possible
guys are doing it and uploading on net 3DBD iso25GB (frame sequential)
butnot sure what kind of software they are using

What are you guys playing your 3D ISO rips with? My PDVD 10 w/ the latest patches won't play ISO if you're running it out of WMC. I was able to get it to work by reverting back to the version released in January. Problem is that version won't play Tron Legacy correctly it has random stutters. I also found out the early versions won't work with IE9. I use MPC-HC for 2D rips, I've forgotten how much I hate PDVD.
