It just dawned on me while I was working on construction in my theatre that I had been listening to the thing even though the projector isn't hooked up yet. The HDMI cable is connected to the ATV but it's not connected to anything on the other end (no hot sync).

I can confirm that. I'm not running it headless, but I have in the past. We were actually just discussing that topic in the AV Distribution subforum. I makes more sense than the Airport Express. It works great when you have the iOS remote working along side of it.

But the airport express has analog audio output... I want one to connect to an amp that has no opt input in one secondary room.

While I have an AVR with multiple zones I don't want to wire all my house when "today" my media content is in my IOS devices.

What do you think?

Thanks. Things are looking good to get my living room working again!

I have been less than thrilled with my Airport Express. Maybe it's because it's a 3 year old model but it dropped out on me too often.

I use an original Apple TV as the head for my patio zone. The original ATV is still controllable with the Remote app and has variable analog output. That thing is awesome... The only problem is that it's a power hog (50w I think) compared to the ATV3 at 7w. They're cheap now so you might consider that.

I have an ATV 2, but I don't see analog output. You mean ATV 1?

Yeah, that's what I meant by "original apple tv".

ATV1 has analog. Check Craigslist.

Hello all quick question for you.

I have the chance to buy a lightly used 2nd Gen firmware 5 Apple TV for $80.00.

The ONLY reason I want an Apple TV is for XBMC.

Since currently the firmware on this 2nd gen and 3rd gen aren't jailbreakable do you think it's worth while for me to get the 2nd gen for that price? Or should I just wait to see if the 3rd ever becomes jail broken?

Yeah that's the only downside. I'm in the same boat, so I'm stuck using the Express. Monoprice does have a cheap DAC (~$22) that people report to work well with the Apple TV 2/3 though. I grab that once the Express kicks it.

Was your Airport Express connected to your network wirelessly or wired? Or was it just not a network thing? I've only tested mine once or twice and haven't had the opportunity to make it completely part of the system yet.

The nomenclature may be a bit subtle. E.g. there is no ATV1 and Apple referred to the original ATV as ATV Take Two after the V3 update. That said most people would expect "original" to mean the first or the original production version.

The model designators are unambiguous and shorter than the "(First Generation)", "(Second Generation)" tags used by Apple in the support area.
ATV ATV(1,1)
ATV2 ATV(2.1)
ATV3 ATV(3,1)

You should buy things that do what you want when you buy them. If you want a box that might do something different in the future then, sure, get a black ATV.

My Airport Express was connected on Wi-Fi. The problem seemed less likely to be networking and more related to Airplay itself. Even with multiple Apple TVs I get Airplay dropouts that drive me crazy. Why can't the thing buffer a minute or more to make sure there's no dropouts?!

Good call, thanks for the sound advice.

Get the 2nd generation ATV or better yet an HTPC. XBMC on the ATV is not as nice as on other systems. Even my original ATV with a Crystal HD card ran XBMC better under Linux.

The ATV is an accessory to iDevices and for people interested in streaming what it offers.

Questions for all your APT users.... What the best way to get the best SC out of the apple TV. Would adding an an external DAC benefit much? I'm trying to figure a way to covert my iTunes to FLAC as that seems what most people are doing and than running that to their squeezebox. Wondering if APT could do the same as far as SC.
Thanks in advance

The new (black) ATVs are digital only so you have to use an external DAC. Typically the one in your AVR.

Since FLAC isn't supported you would use Apple Lossless (aka ALAC) which, since it's now open source/royalty free, may get better support.

Does anyone have an opinion or data on streaming speeds with the Apple TV? Specifically, I want to know if it'd be any faster to pull up the video on the ATV YouTube GUI versus pulling it up on my iPhone 4S and using AirPlay. Using Airport Extreme router with Time Warner Cable currently at 16 mbp/s.

^^^

if i understand your question correctly...

from a "logical" point of view, it would certainly be "faster" to stream directly to yout atv, rather than streaming it to your idevice and then re-streaming it to the atv...

Its networking related. I run 9 zones with no issues. All 9 zones are ethernet or powerline no wifi. Hetergenous mix of different generation airport express and apple TV's.

airplay does not cause data loss your network does. My solution to wifi hiccupps was powerline and ethernet.

Thanks. Problem is, the Apple TV YouTube GUI sucks donkey butt. I mainly watch videos from channels I subscribe to, and the ATV GUI doesn't have the "New Videos" tab that is present on the iPhone and iPad interface.

Alright, what are you guys using to scrape your movies for the Apple TV? I can't be the only one getting bored at looking at intro screen shots of every movie. Google surprisingly brings up very limited options, short of buying everything through iTunes.

Subler, MetaX

I can't get the ATV3 to work when I select 1080p as resolution

My tv is 1080p , I'm using an hdmi switch with all high speed cables
Everything else works on the switch , the atv3 works when I select 720p
But with 1080p the screen blacks out in and out and I get no signal on the tv

I tried using others cables and still the same

I'm using amazonbasics hdmi cables

Have you tried connecting the ATV directly to your tv without the switch?
Yes it works fine connecting the ATV to the tv without a switch

But I need the switch , and the harmony can't change inputs on my tv

The switch would appear to be the troublemaker then, not sure how to solve that without replacing or eliminating it.

I assume you have too few inputs on your tv to run everything directly to it. My harmony can change tv inputs but I run all my gear into my AVR and then only 1 hdmi line into the tv so it never has to.

Sorry I can't offer any other suggestions.

I am looking for cables to connect my iPhone 4s & Macbook Pro to TV via HDMI. These cables costing me around $30. Instead, can i buy ATV1 from craigslist and use it to connect to TV from iPhone and Macbook pro?

What are the differences between ATV1 and ATV3 in terms on connecting other Apple products?

I already owned WD Live TV for network streaming, so ATV might not be much useful other than connecting from other Apple devices. But would like your input. Can ATV replace wd live tv, so i can sell wd live tv?

The harmony can, I gave you an answer in the Mitsu DLP thread.
