The bigger your display the better is Blu-ray by comparison.

Just got Apple Tv 3 yesterday connected it to ethernet (modem is by TV setup). I am able to stream from 2 laptops and stream and mirror from Ipad 3 but photos have large black bars on sides and HBOGo has smaller black bars.Connected Apple tv to video (input 4 on receiver thru ARC) on Sony STr 520 receiver with 60" Sharp lc60LE640u TV. What program should I choose to steam? Set Apple Tv to 1080p as my tv supports that format.

iPhone/iPad photos are 4:3 aspect ratio - so yes you will get bars with photos.

I use the native HBOGO app on the ATV - no black bars here. Have you tried that.

I haven't tried mirroring the HBOGO app from my iPad - but I suspect you may be seeing issues related to the fact the iPad screen ratio is also 4:3 not 16:9 like your TV.

Ok. So I would turn off mirroring and just stream? What do you mean by native on HBOGO? Is that in settings? did't see it.Sorry for my ignorance on this.

HBO GO was added in a recent software update. Check to see if you have ver 5.3 (6106). If not, click Update Software.

To play HBOGo from your iPad to your Apple TV turn AirPlay on without mirroring. You may have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen depending on the source material. You would only have black bars on the sides if the source is 4:3. The Apple TV also has an HBOGO app, but your cable company has to activate it. Mine currently does not.

I have Directv which allows me to use. Will turn off mirroring; thought it would be a great feature but not sure where it is very usefull.

I also use my ATV as well as blurays. Not ready to handover the reins just to digital/streaming. I also like having multiple sources for content.

With DIRECTV you can use the Apple TV HBOGO app.

I'm talking about the applet on the AppleTV.  The iPad is not involved when you use HBO GO directly on the ATV.

So it is better to use Apple tv HBOGO than the IPAD app?

I wish apple would put safari on Apple TV

Yes, but try it and come to your own conclusion.

Seriously? Of course!

Yes, the HBO GO app on the ATV is a better option....no buffering or 4:3, just excellent quality streams.

I think it's the same, quality-wise, but more convenient on the ATV. The iPad app gives HD and 5.1 surround sound, as long as you use airplay from the HBOGo app and don't use mirroring.

I really wonder if that would be a good idea. You can always use your iPhone and project the browser onto a screen. I don't think a browser and TV mix well. In the past people wanted access to flash sites on a TV and so they wanted a browser.

In any case this really is a tricky area. Having a browser on Google TV has done little for that platform. The whole app thing on a media player is a bit strange to me. Most of the apps for Google TV, smart TV'S and so on are junk. Kind of like cable with its 95% junky channels.

Based on my PS3 experience it's a terrible idea.

That's probably my biggest complaint about the AppleTV, Airplaying would be a lot nicer if it would automatically turn the ATV on and switch to the correct input.

HDMI-CEC is kinda goofy anyway, my Denon always turns on & is like "hey the TV's on so I need to switch to that input!" even when the cable box is on.

Then again I hardly ever use the apps on my Samsung or play Blu-Rays anymore so I guess I could just turn it off & then it wouldn't switch like that.

Apple is not going to pay the hdmi cec license for each box. It would be nice, but I don't see that happening. Same reason they don't pay for hdmi in their laptops or desktops (except the mini) or why there is no bluray. They push their own agenda/technologies.

Generally I keep CEC turned off if possible.

I use a Harmony remote to switch 'activities' and CEC has a tendency to mess with this.

That said I had to enable CEC on my AVR when I started to use ARC recently.......

I'm clueless! have my Apple Tv 3 hooked up to Sony Str 520 reciever thru ARC (hDMI). Just got it a few days ago but seems to work fine. What the heck is CEC?

ARC is used to send sound from a TV to an AVR without a separate optical connection and, as such, has nothing to do with an ATV.

ARC is an audio path FROM your television's audio decoder TO another device. Commonly an audio amplifier. The type of cable or signal being replaced isn't really relevant. So it could be optical, coax or analog. LPCM typically means the signal is being decoded (from say DD to six discete uncompressed channels) in the televison rather than your AVR and isn't related to the number of channels being presented.

HDMI will get you DD as will optical or coax. If you are only getting PCM, that's a problem with the setup of your ATV. You need to set the output to Dolby and select programs with DD 5.1 soundtracks.
