Hi guys, simple question. I want to buy an Apple TV unit. I know I can stream to it wirelessly from iPad, iPod and iPhone, but can I stream wirelessly straight from my iMac? Thanks.

Yes. As long as you have the airplay icon available.

Yes and no; you are asked to specify your ESPN provider, and then send a code from the aTV and then the provider's ID and PW before you are allowed to watch the ESPN content.

So does that code go for ESPN3 as well?

I ask because I have Charter as my internet provider and thus I DO get ESPN 3, but I have Directv as my TV provider and do not get to see ESPN and the rest of the channels. Most apps I have tried, including the XBox app WILL allow me to watch ESPN 3 content but when I got ESN/ESPN2 content, it asks me to log in.

Is the Apple TV app this way too(no check for ESPN 3)?

**EDIT**
Ok, I found my answer on espn.com. It seems that they didn't bother to code this type of functionality into the Apple App and they lumped everyone into the authentication bucket. So to see ESPN 3 on Apple TV, you need to authenticate first, which screws a lot of people out of using the app for ESPN 3 only because they don't have a participating video provider but DO have a participating ISP.

If you are going to do screen mirroring, you would need mountain lion and a imac made in 2011 or more recent.
Apparently the newer intel processors are required for screen mirroring.

This lets me get around not having Plex installed on my ATV. I can just run it on my iMac and Airplay.

Hot.

IIRC, the aTV made me authorize separately for each ESPN channel.

Hmm, wondering if anyone out who has a different provider for internet vs TV can verify that when they tried to go to ESPN3 content, they had to validate with their internet provider vs their TV provider.

Espn, 2, 3, U all with one login/authorization. Charter Communications. Espn News & Desportes not available.

So with the speculation that there is a "new" ATV coming in the next few weeks, what are the odds they allow full playback and cover all file types namely .mkv?

That's what we expect from Apple, right?

I don't see mkv is all that far fetched since Roku does it easy enough. That's the kind of post that gets played back to you. wink.gif

like everyone else, i would love mkv support. but you've been around these parts enough to know that apple doesnt give a sh*t to what the public wants. they will give you what they want and what they control.
Fooled me! The iPod, iPhone, iPad, on and on was not what the public wanted? You have picked the wrong thread to be a Apple hater and a waste of my time.

did you not comprehend the conversation? ill make it clearer. we're talking about codecs, no one mentioned idevices, only codecs. would you like me to take a picture of the imac im typing this on? your wasting your own time, and now mine, by not comprehending what dl13 was asking.

I agree with Aero 1 about Apple as I've had many dealings with Apple and they really don't care about their customers as much as they do the bottom line.

If you want a Roku/PCH/WDLive/Xbox/PS3/etc. you should buy one of those.

That was the point of my question. I have a WD, great in that it plays all you can throw at it but literally flirts with bricking all the time. The PCH is good but for $275 I want MORE. Roku is a no go because it can't pull mkv's directly off a NAS. After 6 360's 5 of which had RRoD, I wouldn't go back if you paid me. PS3 is great but I don't want to convert on the fly and overall I don't want to convert 9TB of mkv BR content. So yeah, I am STILL looking for a great AND reliable media player. Running PLEX on ATV is great, the machine is smooth and streamlined. Just want another option that could work for me.

Not entirely true, if you have a Synology you can use the DS Video app

Will it work with a WD Mybook though?

Doubt it, hence my "not entirely true". If you pull the drive out of the MyBook and put in a Synology then yes. biggrin.gif

Using ITunes for your media on windows 7 and sending the audio to the appletv via AirPlay you can skip and select songs.

Anyone experiencing buffering when streaming movie Trailers using latest version of Apple TV?
I've developed buffering anxiety. I'm thrilled and delighted when I can get through one without buffering taking place.

Approximately 4 hours ago, I bought and installed a Roku 3. I've been testing it, and it isn't a bad little media player. However, I hate the Plex UI. I wish the Plex was more like the the iPad / iPhone jukebox / UI look. So, I will be returning the Roku 3 tomorrow, and trying out the Apple TV. I'm only going to use it mainly for streaming my server media via Plex and Netflix.

Hopefully you wont be running it on borrowed time until the next Apple update breaks it permanently. There's supposedly another update coming on Wednesday I believe for iOS 7.
