NHT 083 10" Line Array SUB Towers

I'm still working out some of the details, but I've decided that I want to build a pair of towers with six 10" NHT 083s in each--just because I want to see how they will look. And sound.

Edit: I forgot to say that I'm going Sealed.

That sounds pretty fun.

Will these compliment your left and right speakers or run off the LFE channel?

I thought this sounded familiar.

@ Scott--I picked up an NHT X2. I plan on using that to combine the L/R Bass with the LFE channel--assuming my receiver won't combine them for me--because I don't want these bad boys loafing when there is no LFE activity taking place.

@ MRKAZADOR--I still think Erich H's Dozen 10s was the coolest sub build. Framing the screen with them was uber-cool.

@ KGVeteran--I have one amp that is rated to handle the 2 ohm nominal impedance which 6 of these beasts in parallel will present as a load, and it is a QSC PLX3002.
Ah. Gotcha. I am not familiar with the NHT X2 so I trust you know how to use it. Leaving the left and right as 'large' on your receiver with no kind of 'double bass' or similar features enabled for the LFE should make that work how you want.

I like the sound of this build. Sound punchy already.

Have you thought about mounting them opposed in the boxes?

Opposed Mounting was suggested to me, but I can't get the In-Your-Face look that I want by going opposed. So, I'll have to rely on Bracing for vibration cancellations and maybe Box Weight to keep it from walking across the room.

What I always wanted to see Eric do with that set up:

Move screen forward so that it was flush with front of the subs using AT fabric like Center Stage XD and then place three high output LCR's like the No Quarters behind the screen. That with the 12 10" NHT's would make for a great HT. Could add near field subs later if wanting more feel to the bass.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking I would do if that were me though his system as it is no slouch at all.

Never know, maybe I'll do something like that in the future! My end product did look a bit different after I built the NHT clones and got rid of the Polks and framed in the top. Yeh, the center channel was lowered after this photo was taken:

Regardless, this is Mr. Passinginterest's sweet build and I can't wait to see what he comes up with. No doubt his work will make mine look like childs play and I'll have to rebuild my whole thing to feel good again!

PassingInterest, if you're using some EQ, which I'm sure you will be, you can get by with less than the 2 cu ft per driver like I used. 1.5 cu ft would be just fine.

Rock On!

Did you build those NHT M5s?? why not build a base for them... cuz those stands are sort of unsightly.

Yes, they're actually VR-3's, the link is in my signature. The stands lasted about 2 weeks in the room. They were temporary, I'm glad you liked them so much!

PassingInterest also built some much nicer VR-3's, and a lot of them too, like 45, or so it seemed! You should check out his build, he made everyone jealous of his woodworking skillz.

Mr. PassingInterest, are you done with this build yet! Bring on the photos, time is a wasting!

Haha! It only seemed like I built 45 VR3s, because I kept re-doing the finish until I finally got it right.

I haven't made a single cut, so you guys haven't missed anything yet.

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement, guys. I'll take a lot of build photos along the way.

You are far too kind, sir.
Glad to see you're still around.

Did not mean to derail the thread. I wish I had your space. Your room has enough depth for a good AT screen set up. Passing interest will build something cool I am sure. He has skills.

This should be interesting. I'm not sure you need the 2ohm load all parallel configuration though as the available power from the QSC is enough to wipe out the 083's thermally.

Good point, Mayhem. I may want to re-think the wiring. Any suggestions?
Not to hijack the thread......but...... An AT screen was the single biggest improvement I have ever made in my system...ok, back to the show
post #25 of 68
I can't wait to see your T100.....Er, build I mean . I suppose you won't be short in the bass department there, eh PI? Or the sheer physical impressiveness department. If you weren't so darn nice, I'd probably crack some jokes about compensating for something.

Course, I've got about 12 cubes of sub and a 100" plus screen in my little living room...

Mommy, what's "hypocrisy" mean?

Maybe use eighteen 083's instead of just twelve?

Where can these be acquired? I thought they were vaporware these days.

KGVeteran--Thanks for the tip on the AT screen.

RyguyOK--You're a funny guy! And of course I'll have to sneak my T-100 into a few shots.

Erich H--Don't think I haven't thought about it. But, as nice as it might look, I think the 083s would all be loafing on the job if I used that many. Even with 12 they won't get much of a workout. Still, the idea does have some appeal.

dykz34--Sorry, but you're right. They are no longer available. These drivers have been collecting dust on my closet shelf for far too long now.

Cool build. If I could get ahold of them, I'd run 16 opposed. Four boxes of 4. Anybody have 16 laying around they want to unload?

If I have six 10s in a line, plus 2-4 inches between each, these will be over 6 feet tall. Which means standing waves from the top to the cabinet bottom.
I think the solution would be to put two dividers in the cabinet, to keep the top to bottom distance smaller for each section internally. Any thoughts?
