Any possibility the BA sub is better? It looks like it would cost $50 to return the BAs and then jump on these, and frankly the smaller size and lower weight of the BA sats will come in handy. So if the sub's better that would be the nail in the coffin, and I'd likely just get a BS21 and matching center than then try to flip the BA center. I mean, that seems to be the best value/SQ/space compromise in my case...could've just saved time and listened to afrogt to begin with

This is the BA set I'm referring to; snagged them for $199 yesterday.

The bs-21s have a much lower freq range (more bass), so they should sound better than those sats. The BA and Pioneer sub would probably sound very similar.

hmm, wondering how musical the sub is? Have a google offer coupon for $40 for newegg and debating if this sucker will fill in under 120Hz in my stereo nearfield listening system (sunfire CRM-2 ribbons + emotiva XPA-2)

Hmm...dang. Just my luck, I suppose. Thanks for your help.

Are the SP-C21 center sides flat so you could use them as a left/right set upright?

Yes - they'll work fine sitting upright. They're only curved along their length.

Thanks kgod. I am temted to use two SP-C21s for my front L/R or wait for the 51s to go on sell.

Buy 1 c21 anyway. Great price.

The c21 is about 3/4 as tall as the fs51 standing upright. lol

Just to encourage people to get some... an updated picture of my FS-51s and C21 with my Mitsubishi 73"... in the process of finishing remodeling the room... paint is next...

Just buy them for L/R now, and when FS-51's go on sale, you'll have a good excuse to expand to 7.1 3 SP-C21's in front is an interesting idea worth trying.

Hmm, one more q: the room I'm gonna put these is 20'x16', with tile flooring and 6' high ceilings - though the sofa will be in the middle of the room and not against any of the walls. Are the Pioneers going to be that much better than the BAs in that scenario, or are both of them insufficient?
I have also got a set of old Kenwood towers collecting dust, but something is the matter with them because they sound muddy and boomy

Wow. I don't think I realized just how much of a monster the center channel speaker is.

Yeah, it is huge...

I just got the Pioneer package at Best Buy and the center was too big to fit in my entertainment center so I had to build a riser to fit it under the TV

My wife would hurt me

I did order two more SP-C21's for the front L/R. 149.97 for all three front speakers. I think they will sound good from reading this thread from the beginning. I will probably build stands to get the tweeters up to ear height. I have a set of Mission surrounds out back from the mid 1990's that are really too good for surrounds. Ordered a Denon AVR-1712 that arrived this week. Christmas gift from my son, a Panasonic BDT210P 3D blu-ray player. The only other thing I need to get is the HDTV. I think I will get a Mits 73640 or 73740 but seeing some good prices on Panasonic 60' and 65" ST models. Will need a tv stand and a UPS battery backup if I get one of the Mit's. Hope in the next three or four weeks.

I'm considering going with three cs-21's as well. With kids I'm worried about the fs-51 floor speakers, and the bs-41's aren't on sale anymore. Has anyone else tried running three cs-21's? Thanks

Quick question guys...

I'm considering going with the full Pioneer speaker set that NewEgg currently has on sale. The only reservation I have is the size of the center speaker. It would fit underneath my tv on the stand with one caveat:

I'd slide it into the side and it would fit, but the actual front facing gap between the shelf and the frame is less than 7.9 inches. I'd lose about 1 inch of the speaker behind the frame of the stand. Will this have a huge negative impact on sound quality? It may look a bit goofy but it would fit. This is the stand I have

http://www.amazon.com/Techcraft-HBL6...8383098&sr=8-1

You can see that front frame piece dips lower than the actual total heigh of the shelf. thoughts? I'm really interested in this set. I am in the return window for Energy Take Classics 5.1 that I paid $400 for. It looks like I could get this set for about $230!!!

Shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, great, thanks.....I've read the sub is the weakest of this set. Any ideas for a better substitute?

The BIC F12 is a popular budget sub.

That's a nice mod you put together for the center speaker. I am assembling a 5.1 setup for my basement budget home theater. I just ordered the same center speaker along with the two smaller bookshelf BS21 units. I can round out the system with another set of BS21s, or perhaps a set of the center channels to use as the front left and right as some persons have suggested, or wait for the towers to maybe go on sale again. Too many decisions, lol.

I'm considering upgrading to these Pioneer speakers for a basement home theater. The ceiling has open rafters and I was hoping to hang the speakers horizontally like my current Onkyo htib. (Keeps them away from the kids) My question is would three cs-21's mounted from the ceiling sound as good as one cs-21 and two floor mounted fs-51's? Also, is there a big drop in sound quality mounting them up high like that? Here's a couple pics of my current front center and left speakers. Thanks

I am thinking this stand would be capable of holding a pair of SP-C21 up on end as a L/R.

Or do you think I would need to upgrade to this?

So did you build those stands for the fronts and center? If not, where'd you get them and for how much?

Front Right/Left are on Wood Technologies WT-10.5 and the center is on the Wood Technologies C-12... at least I think that is the numbers... the center is 12" tall and the R/L are 10.5" tall. Check Amazon - I don't remember the price.

Another updated room picture... painted the front wall this weekend:

Looks really nice. Great setup.
Agreed. Very nice. BUT - with speakers as big as these, I fear you will need to upgrade to a bigger screen. Of course that means a bigger room. Then a bigger house. Then .....

The unspoken hidden cost of the Pioneers.

LOL!!

Yeah... I already had to upgrade from my little 57" to this 73" - then rewire the room to move my equipment out of the front... these Pioneers are getting expensive!

I was wondering if this made sense like some people above, and dug a little deeper into this massive thread.

I found Andrew Jones response(the designer of these awesome speakers) response in one of the first few pages(post #158):

"Now, as for the center channel speaker, yes it can be used vertically, and in fact would work even better this way. It's an unfortunate fact of home life that center channels are required to be wide and low in shape, forcing typically dual woofers and a central tweeter. This is not a great arrangement for good horizontal dispersion. I have done my best by designing a waveguide around the tweeter to match its directivity to the bass driver, and have set a low xover frequency compared to what is typical for this class of speaker.
It's dual woofers have been optimized for greater mid bass power handling when used along with a subwoofer, for home theater use, as opposed to bass extension for a reasonable full range stereo speaker as was the goal for the bookshelves.
All said, go ahead and use two center speakers vertically."

Good enough for me.
