Pioneer's Speaker Genius Hits Low Price Point - Page 80

Hi folks,

I bought a full set of these (FS51, BS21, C21) from newegg when they had the crazy promo. 220$ for the full set. I'm in Canada, and for me, this is an INCREDIBLE deal. Can't get anything close to that price here, for anything half decent.

I'm super happy, and I'm really excited to get them (my sister is bringing them from the states). When I give them a listen, I'll fill everyone in.

I'm running a Harman and Kardon AVR 235, not the loudest little monster, so hopefully, enough to drive these "slightly inefficient" speakers.

Update to my stacked FS51 4.1 setup: changed crossover to 50. (I wish someone could explain to me why stacking these speakers sounds so good). Listening to Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band: That's How We Roll, great demo disc and the best standard cd I've heard. Honestly I can't hear any weakness in this setup in my room.

That ought too sound great, and with the speakers being so inexspensive I might want to get a second set. Can we get a picture?

who prefers their 51s at 60 or below crossover? today i lowered them to 60, before they were set to 80. ive had it this way for just a few hours so im still trying to decide if ill keep them at 60 or raise them back to 80
post #2375 of 4297
I tried lowering the crossover to 60hz on the 51's (from 80hz), but didn't do a real comparison. If there was a difference it wasn't obvious.

I think a lot may depend on the sub - if it's a good sub and the correction software in the receiver can do a good job of managing the speakers and sub, then directing everything below 80 to the sub makes sense.

But I believe the 51's are pretty good in the bass, down to the mid-40's. So the question is how to make that work for you in your situation.
Should I plug ports on my 3 c21's, I'm using them across the front, I am not able to place them but a foot or so off the wall, I was reading plugging them will tighten up the bass and help with the reflection issues with them being so close to the wall.
I too am using 3 c21 and was wondering the same myself. Might try it out later today/weekend and give it a good listen.

So I have been listening to the whole series of these speakers, I have 2 pairs of 41's 2 pairs of 21's 1 pair of 51's, one 21 and 2 sw8 subs. First off every one of these speakers sound unbelievably warm and bright at the same time with realistic sounding low end. I am using the 51's up front for home theater with 2 sw8 subs next to them and it definitely spreads out the bottom end with 2 subs instead of 1 bigger one(which I tried also) I'm crossing the 51's over at 60 and it blends real well. This also works well for music and my vinyl sounds so warm I've been listening to more of my albums lately but these speakers also make cd's sound warm almost analog like too! I'm also guessing that as these speakers break in they will sound fuller but as they are they blow away the Polks that I had. I hooked up the 21's to a small integrated Onkyo receiver/cd player and could not believe the amount of low end they put out for a 4" woofer just amazing. I freaking love these speakers!

I just bought my second set of 21's. Newegg has them for $49 shipped again through tomorrow. >>> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82117405-L017C

I've received my C21, and pair of FS51's in the mail and I really underestimated the size of the C21, holy moly, there is no way it will fit on my entertainment center.

I should be able to build a little shelf behind my TV and mount it on the wall without causing any interference shouldn't I? The manual does mention the speaker being shielded.
if you've got a flat panel TV, shielded or unshielded does not matter.

Unshielded speakers only affects older CRT tube TV's.

I just built a stand to put my TV on and fit the C21 center under the TV. It works pretty well and I think it's preferred to having the speaker on top of the TV.

Would it hurt to hook these up with 18 gauge wire that is already hooked up to my Denon AVR 987? I ask because of them being 6 ohm and my Infinity TSS 1000 were 8 ohm. My longest run is about 32 feet. I really dont want to run new wire unless this will cause problems. Thanks for your help...

That looks so awesome. I'm sure the impact is much greater than using a single pair of FS51s.

I couldn't be happier! I know it wouldn't work with kids like I have it, too tippy. Could be the first time in my life that I don't have upgradeitis....wonder how long that will last :-)

I had considered putting this speaker on a stand, but I'm in a smaller room than what I used to be. I live in a condo now so I no longer have the luxury of all the open space to move stuff around as I see fit. My bed is about the only place I have to sit where I can watch TV and it's about 6 feet away from my XVT553SV now. I wanted to put my home theater in the living room, but my roommate flat out refused. Women, I tell ya.

If I were to get a stand I would have considerably less walking room, and I still need to get a chair for the desk which I also have in my room lol. But at this time, a wall mounted shelf seems like it may be the best option. So I'll probably want to move things around, but needless to say now that I have the FS51's, things are getting cluttered.

Thanks for the information about the CRT TV's though, guess I never took that into consideration.

Probably running in a series or parallel.. 3ohm or 12ohm load, 3ohm will kill the receiver, 12ohm will have 60% of the power output
post #2392 of 4297
Why will 12ohm have 60% of the power output?

Nope: the 919 lets me use the 6&7 amp channels to "bi-amp" the front speakers.

My local Best Buy in So Cal no longer has the Andrew Jones speakers on display. They can still order them though.

Based on my reading of some of the reviews here, I just bought the 5.1 set from BB today online (free shipping & no tax). Of note, if you purchase them separately, it comes out cheaper than buying the package (typical BB pricing craziness). I just bought the Yamaha RX-V571 yesterday on amazon. I am looking forward to when they are delivered by the end of the month (shipping to Europe via APO). They are replacing a 20+ year old Pio VSX-501 receiver and newer Boston CR-67s. I plan on testing the BS21s or Bostons for the rear in a 7.1 configuration. The Pio will become a headphone amp (not portable but allows me to crank up my digital music without disturbing others). I will give you my impressions after receipt. As a reference point, I used to own Klipsch KG-4s paired with a Marantz 2215b receiver (cool looking) which got stolen in the late 80's.

Nice! Bet you get a regular wall of sound from those mega-towers, just don't let them fall into the TV screen.

One of the good things about a newer condo...concrete floors and double walls...

Just picked up the center channel and towers at Best Buy. I have Polk RtiA7 towers which are bulky beasts. They sound nice but look kinda clunky in my living room. Would be much better for man cave use. These things surprised me on how good they sound. In fact on some things (piano for one) they actually sound better than the 5x more expensive Polks. In no case do they sound seriously inferior. They are def more power hungry though. Quite the value! I have a Pioneer 1121 receiver. After running the auto calibration it tagged the towers as 'large'. So when playing 2 channel stereo the sub is shut off, and on multi channel the sub is getting minimal use. Would I better off to set them to 'small' and set the crossover to 80hz and let my Polk sub handle the bass? Any input is appreciated. Edit: Also the Pioneer manual suggests setting the center speaker to small and crossing over at 100hz. I'd have to cross the towers over at the level too if I set the towers to small.

Unless you have a sub as big as your actual sub built into your speakers, never run large. Run small and set to 80hz.
