Pioneer's Speaker Genius Hits Low Price Point - Page 171

The FS51 towers are about to go on sale tonight at 6pm PT at Newegg for $100/pair. This basically makes them the same price as the BS22s. How do these compare? I'm starting a budget build for my small room (10x10). I will use them mostly for movies. Also, I don't have a subwoofer at the moment.

Adam:  Where did you see the price listed?  I do not see any prices on these Shell Shocker deals.

The price is in the "Today's Shell Shocker Deal Previews" email.

DEAL 5 PREVIEW Available from 6:00PM - 11:59PM PT 02/16/2014 Pioneer SP-FS51-LR Floorstanding Speakers Pair $99.99After $30 MIR.

Note that I've linked to the product page, not the email link.

Assuming $1.99 shipping, that's $305.94 for an awesome 7.0 setup with phantom center and enough bass to keep you going while you save up about double that for a decent sub.

I saw it on slickdeals. That is with a mail in rebate though which I hate.

How would the bass compare between the BS22 and FS51?

I, too, grabbed a pair for $120 when Amazon price matched the Fry's deal. That price @ Amazon only lasted about three hours, iirc, but I was fortunate enough to be online at the time.

I found some concrete retaining-wall blocks at Lowe's that I use as platforms for the FS52s in my carpeted HT room. These "rocks" weigh 30 lbs., so they provide very solid footing on carpet, and they only cost $2 bucks apiece. I wish they were a tad larger in depth - the rear edge of the speaker base plate overhangs the block by about 1/2 inch - but the width is perfect. They make my 52s feel much less "tippy" while raising the height 3 inches. I suppose they could be painted, but the beige color blends well w/ my carpet so I just use them as is. Did I mention they're cheap? :D

I walked into the Fry's at Sunnyvale, CA today and they dint have the 52s in stock. The manager said they haven't received a new shipment for a long time and said that the model was probably being discontinued. He was trying to get rid of the floor model at 10% discount. Anyone know if the rumor of the model being discontinued is true?

It was discussed in post #5071 and a few others after that.

The current models are not discontinued. They will remain for all of 2014. Andrew and I are busy working on other good stuff right now...

Yeah, something at 2x-3x the price of the BS22/FS52 would be fantastic.

i have the first gen pioneers in my living room for a couple of years now. they sound awesome, better than my first setup the energy take classic. so i am sitting here wondering what more expensive speakers can do.

after much research i see a very good upgrade would be the emptek series. i am waiting for emptek sale prices. but i would definitely order a higher priced pioneer set in that price range you mention instead of the emptek even at their sale prices, but i dont want to wait too long. hopefully these new andrew jones speakers Walkamo mentions will be out by the end of this year. im still keeping the first gen they will be going to the bedroom.

FWIW, there was a recent thread pertaining to perceived shortcomings with Pio's room correction solution (MCACC), when compared to other solutions. An update is said to be in the works.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1515960/why-doesnt-pioneer-receivers-use-a-sub-eq/90

The rub on MCACC is that it does not apply room correction in the critical bass frequencies. If it did, it might well be a strong competitor to Audyssey, who''s own shortcomings are becoming more well known.

A higher priced/higher performing set of AJ speakers would be cool, but a real Aud competitor would also be pretty cool.

Not really, you can get it from Audyssey XT32 already. Meanwhile there is a void of good bookshelves between the price range of $1200 and $120 a pair...
