Can Xbox output DD 5.1 via optical and video via HDMI at the same time?

I am giving my BIL my old Onkyo receiver, that does not have HDMI inputs.
He currently has his 360 connected to the TV via HDMI.
If he plugs in an optical cable from the back of the 360 to the receiver, will he get DD 5.1 sound through the speakers?

Yes.

Use the a/v dongle that comes with your xbox. Not the big fat one with component cable.

I'm not sure if he has that dongle or not.
Do you have to use that or can you just plug an HDMI cable and a TOSLINK cable in the back?

See my comments on the "Deals" thread in the 'sticky' section at the top of the page. You can get the Dongle on e.bay for ~$5.00 shipped, YMMV...

Unless he has the new model 360, that has an optical port on the back of the console..

Depending on what 360 you have... this should work fine:

Run the HDMI to the display for video and run a digital optical cable from the Xbox, via the above dongle, to the receiver.

another option is to crack off the case of the HD cable so that it will fit in along with hdmi. from there you can run optical off the MS HD cable. If he has an MS HD cable laying around, of course.
