Speakers on a budget

OK first don't pounce on me and suggest speakers that are out of my price range. We can't all afford thousands of dollars on speakers.

I'm getting a Denon AVR1610 and have a pair of old Pioneer HPM-100 speakers for now. I'm thinking that I'll have a hard time finding a center speaker to match up with these so I will probably sell them and have been looking at the new Pioneer home theater speakers.

Think these would be a good match and then I'll look for the back surrounds later after I hopefully get some more overtime.

Interesting, how do these sound for music? Guess I'm use to speakers that look more like a stereo speaker and not such a small box.

The room is 14x21 and don't need it to be real loud but sound good for both movies and music. Right now I would like to stay around $400 or so. Of course cheaper is better these days as long as it isn't cheap crap lol.

I know you would like to use your older Pioneer speakers but you can use them as a Zone 2 speaker set specifically for music. I have a similar setup with my Floorstanders just for music and my Satelite 5.1 system just for movies
Here is what I would get

-Jamo S 406 HCS 5.0 speaker set, $200 w/shipping
-Bic F12 Subwoofer, $184 w/shipping

Humm, I don't want to be worried about blowing the speakers if I do crank er up once in awhile. This is the avr specs. 110w at 6ohms.

Would I even need the pioneers with these speakers. I really don't have room for all of these speakers plus the Pioneers.

Then get rid of the pioneers of place them in a different room. It is standard practice to match the front 3 speakers for the best sound.

The Denon AVR-1610 going by the spec sheet is 75watts per channel. You will not even get close to blowing the jamo's cause in reality at full volume they one may get up to 50watts per channel

That is the best 5.1 setup I can recommend in your budget with the size of your room

75w at 8 ohms, the Jamo's are 6 ohm. At least that is what the spec sheet I'm looking at says 75w at 8 ohms and 110w at 6 ohms. I am going to sell the Pioneers.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know squat about ohms and watts and don't get the different watts per which ohm. I just don't want to crank them up sometime and end up blowing them.

I would take a look at these three options around the $400 price mark:

Any one of those systems would sound great in a small to medium sized room. I personally have tried out the Energy Take Classic and the Energy RC Micros and they sound really good for the money. You can read reviews of these on Cnet and Hometheatermag.

Thanks remedy1978, I actually prefer the looks of the Jamo's if I was certain they can handle the Denon 1610 I would get them.

I use a Denon receiver with my 6 ohm Jamo speakers. You'll be fine.

No it just will give you extra headroom so that the speakers aren't struggling being underpowered. It doesn't sound like you will be playing your speakers at top volume for long periods of time so you don't need to worry.

On another note if you wanted to use your pioneers as rear surrounds, you could pick up a pair of Polk Monitor 30's (or two pair if you didn't want to use your pioneers) and a get either the CS1 or CS2 center all from Newegg, then pick up that Bic F12 or the H-100 and still be around your $400 mark but if you wanted to "upgrade" later you could get the Monitor 50's or 60's later and put the 30's in the rear.

No I'm not worried about what it puts out. I'm worried about harming either one by not having the correct match.

I think they're perfect for what you're looking for. I've got the Pioneer floorstanders and think they're insanely incredible. They just make music sound so right.. Believe it or not, they're replacing a $900 pair of Monitor Audio's Silver Series bookshelf speakers.

I am on board with the Energy recommendation. I don't know anyone on a budget that has been disappointed with Energy brand.

Well maybe in my hast I made the wrong decision. Guess if I don't like them I'll return them and pay the restocking fee. I see I can refuse them but still have to pay a restocking fee but I'd at least like to hook them up and see how they sound.

No the energy's are great speakers but they will struggle in your large room, reason why i didn't recommend them
