I wanted to give my feedback on the hdmi passthrough issue.
I have a VSX-32, Panasonic VT60 tv, Sony Blu-ray player, motorola dcx-3400 cable box, and apple TV.
Like many of you, when I turn off the receiver, i get roughly 2 seconds of continued playback on my device before it shuts off. I've tried every setting imaginable on every device with same results. I updated the VSX-32 firmware to 1.09 and that didn't change anything.
I did make some progress though and found a way to pass through the cable box and Apple TV when the receiver is powered off:
1. Turn on HDMI control for the TV, receiver, and blu-ray player. Then power off all devices.
2. Turn on the blu-ray player and TV. You should see the blu-ray player on the TV. (make sure your TV is on the right input). You should also notice a tiny blue light appear on the receiver display while it's powered off/on standby. This is the light indicating an active HDMI connection.
3. Turn on the receiver
4. Power on any remaining devices
5. From the receiver, select the input for the cable box, apple tv, or whatever device normally shuts down when receiver is turned off. LEAVE THE BLU-RAY PLAYER ON.
6. Power off receiver.
Your device will now continue to stay on while receiver is off. If you turn off the blu-ray player, the receiver will stop passing through hdmi and you'll lose video on the cable box or other device.
What this confirms is that you need a device compatible with the vsx-32 hdmi control settings to keep hdmi "alive" while the receiver is powered off. As long as that compatible device stays on, you can pass through any other device whether it's compatible or not. If you turn on the receiver, sound outputs through the receiver. Turn off the receiver and audio automatically switches to the TV.
There is one annoyance, however. If for some reason you turn off the blu-ray and you turn it back on, you have to change the receiver input back to TV to watch normal TV.
Hope this helps somebody.
