HDMI Set-up Help!!!

Hello folks...Newbie here!!

I have the following set up and I need a question or two answered pls! thanks in advance..

Vizio VS42LF HDTV (HDMI ports don't work properly)
Insignia Blu-Ray Player (with HDMI/Component/Optical etc.)
Scientific Atlanta 8300HD Explorer cable box (HDMI/Component/Optical etc.)
Insignia NS-R5101HD Audio Reciever (all the sound decoders included)

I want to connect all my components the right way so I can get the newer Blu-Ray audio formats DTS Master Audio/Dolby TrueHD etc...

Is it possible for me to connect the Blu-Ray player and the Cable Box to the reciever via HDMI(has 3 ports and 1 out) for audio purposes only while connecting them via component (HD) cables to the TV either through the reciever or directly to the tv.

I'm in a bind because the HDMI ports on the TV dont work so I am hoping to bypass those.

Thanks!

If the HDMI inputs on the TV don't work, have the TV repaired/replaced.

all you can do is try it with the blu-ray player (the only source with the HD lossless audio).... it is possible each source has live component and HDMI outputs available at the same time, but on some you have to select one or the other. Really depends on the capabilities of the set top box and the blu-ray player. Crap shoot - give it a try, the receiver will not care one way or the other.

You may have to hook the set top box to the receiver with Toslink optical...it won't have the higher quality audio anyway.

Yes it wont hurt to try.. i do have the optical cables as well so I will do that for the cable box. (good point) so I guess i could just leave the cable box hooked up via component cables and the optical for audio!

Let's ask the obvious...
1) why doesn't HDMI input work on the TV?
2) Have you directly connected the external devices to the TV bypassing the receiver?

Sorry to be blunt, but with Insignia... you get what you pay for.

It works!! I was able to hook them up through the receiver and am running the sound via optical cables. Thanks for the advice. Insignia works great so far..I wasn't looking to spend a lot so yes i did get what I paid for! An inexspensive set up that sounds great via my Bose surround system.

Never saw Bose mentioned in your opening post.

You will not get DTS HD-MA or Dolby True HD with optical cables.
