How's it going over there? Been quite a while. I need to see more pictures of stuff I don't have.
We decided to try our hand at the interior stone work in the house. I used a masonry contractor for the outside work but we wanted to DIY the inside. We have some rather large columns, arches, and the range hood area but why not start in the theater. Since the columns in the theater only have stone up around 3 feet on the colume we thought we would start there for practice. The stone is like a puzzle. There are multiple colors and sizes to fit together. The nice part of the synthetic stone is the sizes are made so they somewhat fit together. We mixed and matched the sizes and the only trimming necessary was when we would fill in small holes in the pattern. We are using the "dry stack" method so although we mortar them to the column we do not grout them.
You will notice a 2 x 4 around the top where there should be a band of something......not sure if it will be brick or ????? We got a pretty good feel for the process and moved on out to the house columns at the entry. We want to get the media room painted the base color before we put up any more stone. I can't imagine trying to cut in around the irregular shapes of the stone where it mets the drywall.
I was also working on the stairway on some step lights and thinking about using them in the theater. Most step lights I find unattractive. I found these really cool LED lights that are about 1 1/4 in diameter. They really are clean and pretty neat looking.
