This is a way to get 3D working on Samsung "3D ready" 1080p DLPs. This method involves entering the service menu and updating the EDID on HDMI 3 input to allow the Mitsubishi 3DA-1 checkerboard converter to work with Samsung DLPs without using a Gefen to fake the EDID.
Mitsubishi is now selling a Samsung DLP compatible 3D adapter (3DC-100S) so this method is no longer necessary.
This is a "TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK" solution.
If you would rather not mess with your Samsung's EDID, check out this thread:

What else you will need
-Monitor Asset Manager (free): http://entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm
-Mitsubishi 3DA-1 checkerboard converter or 3DC-1000 bundle Regarding PowerStrip:
The "update EDID" option is an undocumented, unsupported feature, so it's not included in the trial version. You have to pay for the registration and then E-mail EnTech your pstrip.ini file and a request for the update EDID PIN. If you ask them about the the feature before registering PowerStrip they will probably deny any such feature exists. The "update EDID" feature is not compatible with every video card, this has been the biggest problem people are having. If you have trouble with this you can try using a different video card or PC. EnTech has been very good about giving people an additional PIN at no charge.
The cable:
If your PC has an HDMI or DVI out you should be able to use a standard cable or DVI-HDMI adapter. If it only has a VGA output you will need to build a custom cable. If your laptop has a external VGA output you can try using a VGA->DVI adapter and a DVI->HDMI adapter, you will not be able to get video to the TV but other users have reported successfully flashing the EDID with those adapters.
Building a VGA to HDMI cable
You'll need to sacrifice a VGA and a HDMI cable. Cut the VGA and HDMI cables in half. Using a continuity tester find the wires that lead to "sda" and "scl" on each cable.
VGA pinout:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector
HDMI pinout:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI_connector
Solder the corresponding wires together. Solder the remaining wires in the VGA cable back together with the other half of the VGA cable. This way you can use the VGA input on your Samsung as the monitor.
How this works
The EDID is a 128 byte code that contains information about the supported video modes of your Samsung TV. There is also a 128 byte extension block which contains additional video info and audio configuration. An unmodified 3DA-1 will not work unless it sees a compatible Mitsubishi PnP ID. Once it sees a valid EDID it will modify the PnP ID and add some info to the extension block which will enable your source device to output a 3D signal. The majority of the EDID from your Samsung is passed unmodified to the source device. The updated EDIDs listed below contain the exact same info as your stock EDID, the only thing that has been changed is the PnP ID. The updated extension blocks have just been "rearranged" a bit to keep the 3DA-1 from corrupting the stock info when it adds the 3D info. Once the 3DA-1 receives a 3D signal it will convert it to 1080p checkerboard signal that is compatible with your Samsung.
Flashing the EDID
Connect your PC to HDMI 3 input on the TV and start moninfo. In the upper left corner under "Display IDs" you should see "SAM****" listed as real-time. This is the Plug and Play ID for your Samsung HDMI 3 input. Click on it and save it for a backup. You can use MonInfo to save the EDID as a BIN file or you can just copy and paste the "Raw data" info at the bottom of the "Asset Information" window to a text file. If you're using a laptop you should backup the EDID for your laptop's display also, it will also be listed as real-time.
You will need to either edit the EDID yourself or use a known good EDID from the list below, you should use the updated EDID for the Plug and Play ID of your Samsung's HDMI 3 input. Cut and paste the updated EDID to a text file. Cut and paste the updated extension block to a separate text file. If your PnP ID is not listed below please post the raw data from your stock EDID so I can add it to the list.
You will need to enter the service menu on your Samsung and disable write protection on the EDID. There are more details on the service menu listed below.
Now you can start up PowerStrip. Click on the sys tray icon and select options > monitor information. In the lower left corner select update EDID from the drop down menu. If it tells you it found a valid EDID EEPROM then you should click no. If it tells you it didn't find an EDID then you should click yes. You want to have it scan the bus. If it still doesn't find an EDID then you may need to try using a different video card or PC. It should tell you it found an EDID EEPROM at some port #. Click yes and select your modified EDID text file. It gives you a confirmation message, make sure it's updating the "SAM****" EDID. If it doesn't say "SAM****" click cancel, start over and choose a different port #. You don't want to accidentally flash your laptop display's EDID. Once you find the SAM**** EDID you can click yes. It will flash the EDID and tell you if it succeeded or failed. If it fails you may need to use a different video card or PC. You also need to flash the updated extension block using the same steps, this time select the text file containing the updated extension block. PowerStrip can only write 128 bytes at a time so you need to flash them separately.
Once you successfully flash both the base block of the EDID and the extension block you can check it by refreshing MonInfo(F5). It should now show "MEL****" as real-time instead of "SAM****". Turn write protection back on and get out of the service menu.
You can now connect your 3DA-1 and it should be working.
If you are for some reason flashing a different "3D ready" EDID then the 3DA-1 will need to be reset for the new EDID to take effect. The following steps were done with a DirecTV receiver. This may be overkill but I want to make sure the thing is being reset. If you don't have DirecTV you will probably be ok by just connecting the 3DA-1 to HDMI 1 or 2 and then back to HDMI 3.
1. Disconnect the power to the 3DA-1
2. Connect the 3DA-1 to HDMI 1 or 2
3. Reconnect power to the 3DA-1
4. Tune to channel 103(you will get the message saying the TV is not 3D)
5. Tune to a normal channel
6. Disconnect power to the 3DA-1
7. Connect the 3DA-1 to HDMI 3
8. Reconnect power to the 3DA-1
9. Tune to channel 103 and you should be able to get 3D

The 87S users said it needed to be set to "OFF" and the 89S user said it needs to be "ON". The default should have write protection enabled, so whatever it is when you first enter the service menu, just change it to the opposite.
How to restore the original EDID from within the service menu on 650/750 models:
Follow the above directions to disable write protection. If you return to the previous menu you will see several options that were previously unavailable.
