Well, let's put in this way: everyone has its own opinion and taste.
It did not meet my expectations. Maybe I need to spend more time listening this exciting release.
The 2ch SACD layer (that is my main focus) does not sound detailed, lively enough.
The 5.1 MCH sounds a bit worst vs. 2 ch. To my ears something is missing on this release. Of course everyone has its own opinion; I just wanted to share mine.
I am very sure it is only me, others will have more positive opinion.
I was comparing to several WYWH vinyl transfers to 24/192 kHz I have.

Ouch, I tend to hear a flatness, almost lifeless sound from some disc initially. For me I think it's case of high expatiation, once I'm more relax it sounds a whole lot better. Anyway hope I don't hear what you're hearing no offense.

Does the SA-CD use the same 2011 remasters that are used in the Immersion set?

I just hunted down my FedEx driver and ran him off the road, jumped out of my car and screamed "WHERES MY BOX!!!!!!". Needless to say I didn't go to that extreme but I did meet the driver as he delivers to our area in the late afternoon.

I am almost done listening to WYWH in 5.1 and all I can say is WOW!!!. I have been listening to WYWH since it has been released in 1975 and it has never sounded this good. I am listening and watching out for a repair tech to arrive to fix our washing machine so I'm somewhat distracted. I will write a more indepth (but biased) review in the SQ review thread later today. I'm listening to Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) and it is just incredible. What an incredible job that was done on the surround mix by James Guthrie. Well worth the wait and I can't wait for Animals to get the surround treatment (fingers crossed). As the SACD is winding down the sun just came out on this cloudy Maine morning, how fitting. I think I will listen to it again.

I just picture you sliding on the hood of your car right after reading the very vivid description, thank god no packages were actually hurt during the action scene in your imagination.

You just stacked an extra hour or two on my day I'm off tomorrow for veterans day, so it will get loud.

I just had a listen as well, and I am more than happy with this mix and quality. WYWH has never sounded this good. The 5.1 mix is just enough and very satisfying. Guthrie did a much better job on this than he did on DSOTM.

To think no stuntman was needed and no animals were harmed.

I agree. For some reason to me there is something missing from the 5.1 layer of the DSOTM SACD. Its probably me and I'll give the DSOTM SACD a spin to compare the two.

With the noted exception being the title track on this disc, I am thrilled with this offering. I would dare say "the machine" may be my new go to demo track to show off my system. I am a happy camper. I will do my critical listening in the days to come but so far so good.

The wish you were here track just sounds a bit flat and lifeless to me that was a bit of a disappointment aside from that, bravo!

I'm getting a funny visual of Bill with a crazy look in his eye and sporting an Animals Tour '77 shirt scaring the crap out of this poor guy

i agree with this. the surround mix is nicely done. although,i think the sound quality is about the same as the dark side sacd.

Does anyone have both the SA-CD and the Immersive BD to compare if they are the same Master/quality?

I have both. Just received the SACD today. Will do some in depth listening this weekend.

WOW, simply wow. Half way through Welcome to the Machine now and I've been in awe of this mix/recording the whole time. Granted its always been my favorite Floyd album but this is truly special. The clarity is incredible on every note... 5.1 mix for me thanks... Here, have a cigar!!!!!

I am also waiting for a comparison. I have the immersion set and the bootleg 4.0 quad mix. The immersion surround blows the booleg 4.0 out of the water.
I am just curious if the SACD version has more of an "analog" feel to it.

P.S. got the immersion set at Costco for $89.99
post #228 of 378
Ouch, being a Costco member and paying $45 just for the SACD already makes that hurt...

It is here! It is Now! And it sounds great! The surround mix is very tastefully done, and better than Guthrie's attempt with DSOTM, IMO. My only quibble was with the packaging. Couldn't they have stayed with the original album cover? But I can live with this as the sound is pristine and gorgeous. I pray that Animals will one day get this treatment - at least from Steven Wilson who clearly values this overlooked album; one of Floyd's best if not the best.

No 2 channel love in the Surround Music Formats forum?

I haven't been able to find any 2 channel impressions, so I just ordered the SACD. Hope it lives up to the hype.

From what I have read the RBCD and 2CH SACD layers of the WYWH SACD are among the best versions of WYWH. The only version that was said to be slightly better is the 35DP-4 version which is the holy grail of WYWH CDs. I haven't listened to either 2CH version of the SACD but will definitely try the 2CH SACD layer in the near future. Its hard to play the 2CH layer when I could be playing the 5.1 layer.

I'll take any and all Floyd in 2 channel hi rez if they won't do surround hi rez mixes. (The Wall Immersion set). I hope this can at least happen.

Thanks, guys. Looking forward to it.
I like this remix; but still have a fondness for the original 4.0 mix. Especially the 4.0 version of Welcome to the Machine, which has serious crazy bass going on.
I haven't received the Aqualung BD yet but WYWH has got to a top candidate for remaster\
emix of the year.
Unbelievably good.
Immersive surround mix, punch and clarity.
Welcome to the Machine is worth the price alone.
Pulsing, menacing, unrelenting.
David Gilmour playing along to the radio on Wish You Were Here.... just doesn't get any better.
Personally, I have the Quad mix, no comparison.
I'll likely never spin the 2 channel, why bother.

I like The Wall, never bought it but it would be a crime against art if that doesn't get the same treatment as Wish You Were Here.

I posted this in the Oppo 83 forum also.
I just received my copy of Wish you Were Here SACD on Friday and for the first time since owning my 83 I noticed audio drop out in several portions of the disc. I thought at first my Denon 2809 had shut off but after further review I found it was not and the audio was dropping from the SACD. I have never had this happen before. I thought it might be the HDMI cable so I replaced it with no change. The odd thing is that the drop outs don't always occur in the same spot on the disc. It is also not happening on my Oppo 80 connected to my Denon 3808. I also rented Transformers Dark of the Moon and noticed an audio drop out towards the end of the movie on the 83. Anyone else experience this particularly with Wish You Were Here? Thanks for the help.

I did not have any audio droputs with WYWH with my 83SE. I watched Transformers DOTM on bluray recently and did not notice any audio dropouts with that either.

I've had these drop outs with my Sony XA-X777ES with SACDs that played fine on other players. It is a widespread defect of aging Sony players, and gets worse over time, and it only happens with hybrid SACDs, not single layer ones. I had to replace the laser assembly to fix the problem.

So I guess your problem has to do with the laser as well.

Other Sony users have managed to solve or reduce these issues (at least temporarily) by making sure the SACDs are static-free (place them briefly on a sheet of tin foil before loading them), by running a laser alignment procedure or by cleaning the laser.

I would ask Oppo support for advice.
