A little news on "Wish You Were Here" SACD - Page 2

[quote=thebard;19612425]Every current Blu-ray player listed on the Sony site supports SACD playback.

I was under the impression Sony's new BR megachanger does NOT support SACD? I think it's the CX960.

Yet WB still released the $300 Neil Young boxset. And it's optional, not forced.

I stand corrected. I will restate:

The s370, s470, s570 and s770 (the Sony SINGLE DISC players listed as currently available) all support SACD.

I think your right, there's little future for SACD. Too bad there are many SACDs I'd like to have and probably won't be re-released for BD. Mind you I don't have any SACDs or a player for them, but I am tempted by Sony's cheapest BD player and that supports SACD. Sometimes it takes me a while to find a reason to buy something and that applies to an SACD player. I have a DVD-A player in my storage locker but see no reason to go hunting for it since my computer can play them and I have only a few DVD-As, including DSOTM.

I wish there was a commercially released DVD-A of DSOTM.

Floyd and EMI have resolved their differences completely now (after Floyd won the court battle) and have signed a new contract:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-12112630

So...does this mean WYWH on SACD or BD-Audio is a feasible future release?

Please?

Yep, unfortunately. With the recent release of Tom Petty's "Damn The Torpedoes" and such in 2-channel PCM with 5.1 PCM and DTS MA-HD, I bet you're more likely to see PF material on BD-A than SACD...sadly.

Wow, this is GREAT news!

It will be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out...

I would be up for more multi-channel releases, regardless of format.

I suppose BD makes the most sense at the moment, as this has the most market share.

I was always agnostic in the DVD-audio vs SACD argument; it seemed to me that the mastering was far more important a factor than the final delivery mechanism. Although in theory SACD was superior, I rarely heard the actual difference.

I would disagree that "In theory" SACD was superior to DVD-A, in fact(theory) it would be just the opposite.
And I do agree that the recording and mastering are the most critical factors.
I have several if not lots of CDs that sound as good or better than many of the SACDS I have simply because of the techniques used in the recording and mastering.
If you want to hear some excellent sounding CDs, try the Reference Recordings done by Stereophile and you'll see(hear) what I mean.
IMO, when 16\\44.1 is done "correctly", the results are phenomenal but CD cannot do MCH.

From brain-damage.co.uk

Possibly in 2011:

•Wish You Were Here Multi-channel version/SACD (Super Audio CD)
One of the most anticipated releases, that is still not on a confirmed release footing, is the multi-channel version, possibly Super Audio CD (SACD), of Wish You Were Here. This has been promised for some time, and indeed, in Storm Thorgerson's latest edition of Mind Over Matter, he showcases the artwork for the release which he states "is due in February 2008", which clearly didn't happen! In an interview with David Gilmour published in September 2008 he confirmed that work was still ongoing on the release. At the current time we understand that it is possibly to receive a release in 2011.

Promising but I'll believe it when I see it! Thanks for posting.

There is a DTS version of WYWH floating on the web that is really very good. The bass in Welcome to the Machine is .... wow.

In the day, I had the SQ quad vinyl of this album. I believe the DTS is sourced from this mix.

There are also DVD-Audio versions of Dark Side floating on the web. They are from the original quad versions of DSOTM, not the SACD re-release.

At one time I had multiple versions of DSOTM on SQ quad (german and british versions). For some reason I had better success (less surface noise) on the British release (even though most people revered the German mix). To each their own.

I even had Atom Heat Mother in SQ at one time, if I recall. All gone to the great vinyl heap in the sky, alas.

So I bought some weird WYWH 2-disc "quadrophonic mix/deff mix" thing off eBay--anyone know exactly what this is and/or where it originated from? Is it a bootleg from the original quad 8-track? It also came with a 2-disc quad version of DSOTM and Atom Heart Mother with alternate tracks.

I recall this disc from back in the day, it's been around a while.

Would love to see the SACD of this - but I'll take blu-ray or any other format at this point.

From The Fleeting Glimpse site.......also Vernon Fitch posted it on the Steve Hoffman Forums......

Wish You Were Here SACD We have received hundreds of emails over the years (Since 2005 in fact when we first broke the story of the possibility the WYWH SACD after having dinner with Pink Floyd's then Manager, who told AFG that at that time it was a 'very low priority'). Time has passed and we have been keeping a very careful ear to the ground about this release and can now tell you that it's finally on it's way. No date as yet, but be prepared for a BIG surprise when it finally does surface. Please don't email about this because we have told you all we can at this point.

And no one mention the official release date of the 5.1 SACD of "Wish You Were Here"?

Really excited about the announcement today - Looks like some big releases coming. The $100 price tag is a bit hard to swallow when I already have multiple versions of WYWH (but I'll definitely be buying). Curious to see what the immersion copies of DSOTM and the Wall will bring. The Wall in high rez 5.1 would be great to see also. I am really glad to see the 5.1 high rez release AND the original stereo release in high rez. Also the original Quad versions is a nice addition. I cant think of anything they could add to this set to make it better.
Shame I can buy Disc 3 by itself.
Like many people, all I want is the 5.1 hirez album of WYWH. Asking people to buy a $100 package is rediculous!

Just give me the hirez 5.1 album for around $20 and keep your fluff.

This is very bad news for my wallet. Good news for my musical soul and my brain damage.

Huge Floyd fan here and this is Terrific news!! Something to actually look forward to! Can't believe this box set is only $100. With all that is included, $100 seems like a steal!
So is disc three gonna be DVDA or SACD? Guess it doesnt really matter with the included Blu!!!
