The Superman from the old comics was probably the most wooden superhero ever.
Reeve had to base some of his performance on that.
The fact Reeve managed to put something interesting into the character is a minor miracle IMO.

Reeve was just a wooden, bland, one-dimensional sort of actor, period. I agree that Supes was wooden in the comics - especially where Bob Kane's artwork was involved.

Anyway, I would've just hoped for a little less of that when a movie of it finally came out - not mimicking the worst parts of it.

Superman by his nature is harder to do story's for than Batman. Batman is Dirty Harry crossed with Zorro- gritty, dark and hard with a theatrical flair. Superman is an alien do-gooder. Try to make him edgy and you make him something he's never been and people don't know him anymore. Give us more of the same and we're bored with the character. Pretty much a no-win situation. And one of the biggest problems of all- to be the granddaddy of super hero's, Superman has always had a pretty weak rouges gallery. Hard to make interesting storys with lame villans.

Well let's hope they can do a much better job this time round than the horrid superman returns.

That might be a problem for a lot of us out there. Then again I thought the new Transformers movies sucked because the original was so ingrained in my head so take that for what it's worth. That didn't stop it from making 56 billions dollars though so if it's entertaining enough there's more than enough people out there to make it successful. Now that doesn't mean it would be any good, just saying. Personally I think the Superman character is boring and it would take a lot for me to wanna take it seriously. I enjoyed the first one for the same reasons everyone else did: the plane crash sequence.

Those movies he did well on are Horror movies. Action movies with a real story and a real plot are totally different. People actually have to act.



I agree Doomsday is something that hasn't been done in the movies. Id love to see this is crystal clear 1080p

As someone who is old enough to remember the "golden age"- or certainly the "silver age"- of Superman comics in the mid-fifties through the early sixties, Superman's interest was really due to the enormous variety of things connected with Superman more than Superman in and of himself. Other fossils such as oink may remember many things I have forgotten, but I do remember the Bizarro world, the little Krypton city in the bottle, Superman fighting Al Capone, Superboy, Supergirl and so on.

Superman himself is boring. He's good and non conflicted, for the most part. The comics decreed that he could do everything, and that the only thing that could harm him was Kryptonite, then struggled with coming up with things that would generate any suspense. How many ways can you make a glowing green (or red) rock interesting? As a disclaimer I must confess I know nothing of the newer Superman canon.

And for the Donner Superman movie, I suspect you really needed to see it as a child. It started out fabulously, but midway through it collapsed of its own weight and way too much footage of Luthor's underground lair. I had good memories of Superman II but it struck me as a bit disappointing upon revisitation years later. And the new one was a retread of the first one: more real estate skulduggery.

A Superman film won't work on a small scale. And considering the last one was a box-office disappointment, spending a bundle on another one sounds like a really bad idea. They better have a good script.

So Bruce Willis isn't acting in The Sixth Sense? Shelley Duvall isn't acting in The Shining? Jamie Lee Curtis isn't acting in Halloween?

Yea, I liked them when I first saw them, but going back and rewatching them, the last three especially make me cringe. They haven't held up well, IMHO.

Some encouraging comments about this film have been coming from Snyder's press tour for "Sucker Punch":

“Superman will be a documentary compared to this,” said Snyder. “I’ve stretched this world of abstract reality so far that the awesome thing about Superman is that Superman lives in the real world. And it probably will be the most ‘real’ movie I’ve made. It will more real than even Dawn of the Dead.”

and

Because Superman takes place in a more realistic world, I think it will be a slight departure for me just visually because I think you’re going to go to a more real world. I’ve never made a movie that wasn’t stylized. All the movies I’ve made have been stylized worlds. Who knows? I mean, who knows, we haven’t started shooting it yet.

His wife and producing partner also said that Superman will "“be a definite departure from the things he’s done because the idea is to make him relevant in our world today.”

Also, he had this to say about working with Christopher Nolan:

Yeah, I feel like Chris and I, we actually get along really well and Chris is a really interesting guy and he’s been incredibly helpful and incredibly supportive. I think he just treats me the way he would want to be treated as far as he just has a lot of respect for other filmmakers. He’s an incredible resource on the other hand and he’s super-busy but we see each other quite a bit, and it’s kind of fun and I think we have a pretty good time.

You didn't get the memo? The Superman project from Snyder is dead because of the reviews Sucker Punch is getting. There's no way he can make a successful movie now.

Amy Adams is nice, frankly just about any decent go-get em actress would have been better Lois Lane than reserved Kate bosworth.

No, no, no! I like AA, but she's too "cutesy-girl-next-door" to be hard-nose-reporter Lois Lane. She's gonna have to turn up her acting skills a few notches for this one...

well... I won't make comparisons but to put things in a little perspective:

Zodiac: budget 65 millions, US gross 33 millions
Benjamin Button: budget 150 millions, US gross 127 millions
Fight Club: budget 63 millions, US gross 37 millions
The game: budget ??, US gross 48 millions

Does that mean studios should have replaced Fincher for The Social Network? I mean his track record hasn't been much of a success in terms of profit margins (Of course Fincher always manage to have an overall good worldwide performance with his films, and I think the same goes for Snyder). Sucker Punch is indeed underperforming (which is too bad imo), but I think we have nothing to worry about for Superman. Different movie, different story...

I hope part of that article is right (not the Lindsay Lohan part.) I like the military and Metallo part. Luthor has been done to death and Zod & cronies have also been done. Assuming three movies are planned I'd like to see the threat level ratchet up in each movie. Metallo is good for the first movie. The second movie I'd like to see Brainiac and a teaser ending with Darkseid who obviously would be the baddy for the third movie.

So I wonder if they will put this in movie?

Superman Surprise

Even if they dont it could effect the box office.

They already kinda sorta did in the previous movie, where the red in his costume no longer matched the red in the American flag and he stood for "truth, justice...all that stuff" (couldn't say "American way").

Sad... pathetic.

Can't say I have a problem with this. It not only makes 100% sense, but it also makes for an interesting story arch, and should really raise more discussion than eyebrows.

Superman is just following in Corporate America's footsteps.

In the 'Superman Returns' movie (which I was referencing in my post), it wasn't so much a question of making sense or not, just an indication of how those filmmakers felt about Superman being a representation of America (an embodiment of American values). The recent comic book development is slightly different and, I agree with you, makes sense that he doesn't want to be taken as always representing America (i.e., officially speaking for America). I don't know if he has to give up his citizenship to do the latter. But, that's what makes for good drama and controvercy (and sales). Wonder if Clark Kent will give up his citizenship?

It doesn't make any sense, and is completely stupid and pointless. It's done for controversial publicity mixed with the disease that is overt political correctness.

But who cares, I cant wait to see this film either way.

Well, my wife would say comics and movies made from comics are pointless, but she of course is just wrong
