The Daniel Craig Casino Royale movie is set in the present day, yet presents us with Bond as a first-time "double-O" agent. It's clearly a reboot that resets the continuity of the franchise. All of the previous movies, from Dr. No to Die Another Day, were officially part of the same continuity. The Bond of Die Another Day had lived through the events of Dr. No, Live and Let Die, The Living Daylights, etc. Daniel Craig's Bond has not.
Although the 1967 Casino Royale movie legally obtained the rights to the Ian Fleming book, the film was based on that book in name only. It was not actually adapted from the text, while the newer film was. Beyond the title, the Craig movie is not a "remake."
