This is great news; game is now a day one purchase for me and I only need to decide whether to get it for the 360 or PS3.

There's also an article at Kotaku.

I don't think it needs one. It has already had a couple stereoscopic 3D games come out.

This is amazing news about COD. Already a day one buy for me, but this is a welcome announcement.

I'm not sure to be honest. You could check, but I don't even know if the 3-D mode would be available on the demo. The game box doesn't even mention that it has a 3-D mode, so who knows. I got my copy used for about $10 or 15. Not too bad.

There are currently 3 games available for the 360 that support some form of stereoscopic 3D:

Avatar: The Game (third person action game)
available at retail; supports multiple formats including side by side

Invincible Tiger (side-scrolling kung fu fighting game):
available thru XBLA for 1200 points; supports multiple formats including side by side and top/bottom

3D Infinity (on-rails 3D shooter):
available thru Indie games on XBLA for 400 points; supports side by side.

You can download demos for Invincible Tiger and 3D Infinity that fully support 3D.

Avatar is a very nice 3D showcase though the gameplay itself can get tedious at times. 3D Infinity is a nice little, low-cost way to sample 3D gaming with some nice visuals, good depth and lots of stuff that seems to come out of the screen.

In all cases, you do not need to download any special updates or patches to enable 3D. You simply select the 3D mode you want from the game's options menu, set the TV to the corresponding 3D mode, turn on your glasses and you're good to go.

FYI, theres a video interview with a guy from Treyarch all about the use of stereoscopic 3D in COD: Black Ops here:

How's this work with the Mits????
Do you select, say, "Checkerboard" from the game menu and carry on as usual?
looks like they didn't bother bother to support checkerboard tvs. guess i will pass on this game

knobby,

I'm in the same boat with checkerboard support. I held out hope that either the PS3 would support checkerboard or developers would add support in-game. The reality that neither are likely to happen made me take the plunge and buy the Mits 3D adapter kit yesterday...

My main reason for holding out hope however was that I'm a Samsung owner and wasn't happy with any of the current work arounds costing me the extra money. If I had a Mits set, I would have bought the adapter weeks ago. Considering that checkerboard support appears to be almost non-existant for the future, take the hit and buy the $100 adapter. What's a $100 in the long run when it'll save you thousands on eventually upgrading to a new 3D TV?

Aside from games, the adapter lets you download SBS 3D movies and play them on your PS3 (or Xbox) since you can just put it into SBS mode... so it's also saving me hundreds on buying 3d blurays... don't tell anyone.

I'm curious what system will look better? The 360 or PS3. The Ps3 utilizes Blu-Ray. I know one is side-by-side, while the other is top-bottom. Is one better than the other?

The 3D on the 360 is essentially the same technology correct? Still need my $150 glasses?

What exactly does the Mits 3D adapter do, then? I'm a newbie on this 3D stuff...

Does the source just send a "standard" picture through the HDMI, and the Mits 3D adapter magically knows what to do with it?

In other words, how the crap does it know what to checkerboard???

i was hoping for checkerboard like avatar game.

I'm not going the Gefen route either. Spending an extra $200 to have a messier setup didn't appeal to me. Go to the "3D Displays" thread and read the thread about using the Mits kit with no Gefen on your Samsung. Its just a matter of updating your Samsung's EDID to that of a Mits to trick the adapter (requires $30 in software). The guys on the thread are really good about helping eachother out too if you're not technically inclined.

Without highjacking this thread too much...
1. The 3d adapter knows when it's being sent Full HD L/R 3d content and converts it to checkerboard.

2. It can't tell the difference between standard 2d content and SBS or Top/Bottom content though so it will pass both untouched to the TV unless the user manaully enables 3d mode by simply pressing a button on it (you can enable SBS and T/B modes).

With the PS3, you can download torrents for SBS 3D movies. The PS3 simply outputs it as a standard 2d video signal and then you can enable SBS mode on the adapter to have it converted to 3d. Read through some of the Mits adapter threads in the "3D Displays" thread for more info.

justin! i dont think that would work for me.when these guys talk about changing the samsung edid it is a total different language.i haven't got a clue about what they are saying.

In my experience Top/Bottom generally looks better since you get full horizontal resolution. Where did you read this BTW?

Is this how the Xbox 360 does it, too?
Let's hope it is a 3d-vision ready too.

I'm so glad this Is one place where I won't read any 3D bashing.

I'm buying this 3D game A.S.A.P!

The problem is, those SBS 3D movies are already half-resolution, and then you're watching them via Checkerboard which halves the resolution again, unless I'm misunderstanding how it all works. But I had always heard that when you watch Checkerboard 3D, it's like getting half the resolution and the SBS video files are already half-resolution as is.

Great news! I will be buying the ps3 version along with Grand Turismo 5 which will also be in 3D. Christmas in November; yeah baby!

My Xbox 360 does not have an HDMI output. Is 3D still possible over component video going to my Panasonic 3D plasma?
