The official Epson 8700UB thread

Just got the shipping confirmation from Projector People! It has been overnighted, so I should get it tomorrow.

I hope so! I checked the specs with the 8500ub (which I originally ordered and received the same day Epson announced the 8700ub) and cannot tell what the differences are, if any. I know there's a separate thread on this, but it frankly did not shed any light on what "upgrades" exist with the 8700ub. I am very new to this--just bought it for my nearly completed HT room. I hope there's some enhancements to justify the price over the 8500ub (other than the "free" lamp and anamorphic mode, which I don't need). Since I have never seen the 8500ub picture, I will have to rely on others' experiences to determine whether the 8700ub is an improvement or just a model number change.

uaswimmer1995; it's just a model difference - the only difference is the anamorphic mode and the extra free lamp voucher that comes with the 8700. Otherwise, it looks like the components are exactly the same. If anything, they probably improved the convergence, but again buying it from AVS will check its quality before shipping it out (huge plus!).

I have one, it is great so far. I can take some screenshots but I doubt they will be any better than the 8500.

Does this one only come in white?

To get black you need to get the 9700, which is about $1k more.

How does it perform with the lights on? My theater room will mostly be used with lights off for movie viewing, but would like to have the lights on when watching sports with friends over.

Actually pretty good. My room is not 100% light controlled. I have blackout shades but light leaks around them during the day. So with my white ceiling and white carpet quite a bit of light gets thrown around. It is hard to quantify but I would say you can read in the room with the projector off. Not too comfortably; but you could hold something about 2 feet in front of you and read it.

I was concerned about this as well. Provided you don't have lights on near the screen or lights on directly behind the screen, it looks pretty good. I doubt most "average Joe's" would know something was wrong. This is in the "living room", out of the box mode. I should also mention my walls are a dark, flat brownish color.

If you want to have all of your lights on like a "normal" room, then forget it. It will wash the image out quite a bit. There are screens out there that will help with ambient light.

Then I might as well look into either the Epson 21000 or 31000. Is there a page somewhere that compares all of the new Epson projectors? I do not care about 3D.

I broke down and ordered one. Should be here Friday.

The 21000 looks tempting, if I happen to stumble upon an extra $1,500 by next February...then I might go that route. My plan for now is a refurbished 8500UB (if still available by then).

The 21000 is also white so you would have to go with the 31000 to get black which is going to be another $1k+. So basically you could buy two 8700 for the price of one 31000. I'm sure LCOS is nice and if you have the extra cash lying around go for it, but I think I'll be happy with the 8700 for my first projector.

If your looking for more info there is an Epson thread over in the $3k+ forum and there a press releases from Epson which gives a few details. I would consider the 21000 myself but not sure I can wait for their December launch, my theater room is completely setup minus the projector and its killing me. Plus I don't know if I would see $1k difference.

Just curious, does anyone know what is involved in adjusting pixel convergence?

I take it from what I've read this is not something a "consumer" can do (correct me if I am wrong).

Not that I've notice a problem with this yet (haven't looked very close either), just curious....

I don't think this is available from the Epson projectors, people in the past with convergence issues sent them back to Epson for replacement. I know the Sony HW15 has an option in the menu to change the alignment of the panels not sure about any others that might have this feature. It would be nice to have though.

Does anyone know what features in the new Reon chips are turned off in the 8700 vs. the 9700?

I have a similar post in another thread- but same here- I am rying to figure out between the 8700 or the panny 4k....you epson lovin folk convince me to go epson?

I would read the comparison between the two at projectorreviews.com (if you haven't already). I know he's comparing it to the 8500, but I'll be surprised if there's much difference between the 8500 and 8700.

My opinion, not having seen either in action, would be that it comes down to features. I do have an 8700 arriving tomorrow, so obviously I went with it. For no other reason than it's "newer" than the Panasonic. I'm currently using an old Panny 900, so it won't take much to please me.

I've decided to go with the 8700 UB as well. I had a 1080 UB that was hit by lightning, so I decided to go with the 8700 over the 8350 because Art specifically said in his review that the 8350 was noticeably not as good as the 1080 UB with blacks. So, since I didn't want to take a step back, and I'm not currently willing to bite on the RS-40 because I'm just not sure that 3D will be there this year, I chose the 8700 UB. Having been without my main projector and sound system for 2 months, I can't wait to get everything in!

I still wish there was an SR8005 Marantz receiver to replace my SR8002, but the 7005 will have to do. Please Marantz, don't release it in the next month!

My reasoning is the same on the RS40, though it's going to be one hell of a projector either way I'm sure.

For me it's down to the 8500ub vs the 8700ub as well, at least unless something better comes out between now and Christmas near the same price (very unlikely).
Can't decide if I should buy it now or after I move, bah I don't want another sensitive electronics device to haul around, but it's getting harder and harder to wait hearing about everyone buying their new PJ.

I think I am leaning more to getting the 8700UB now.

I know I should only post 8700UB screenshots, but since I got the chance to demo a 9500UB unit back in May I wanted to give people an idea of what results I got that should be the same with the 8700UB.

These are pictures I took of Monsters Inc. projected on my Gray Wall (for testing)! I was very impressed on the color reproduction and sharpness. Note that the projected image is 122" diagonal as well.

well- somone get their 8700 set up and give us some real thoughts please- its tough not to go 8700 with free bulb right now....any reason the panny 4k would outdo this one?
Also- if AVS is selling them- where is the link? I would prefer one that was "tested" by someone in the know (i have heard AVS does this)

PS- the free bulb offer lasts till march of 2012!!!!- we got some time....
