Onkyo - Fix it or Throw it Away?

I have an Onkyo SR605 receiver that I bought in July 2008 for about $300. (so of course the 2 warranty just expired!). Last night I put in a DVD at low volume - the sound worked for about 2 minutes, and then nothing. No sound at all. Tried the tuner, CD, ipod - no sound! Called Onkyo and did the system reset. Same problem - no sound. Not even with the speaker calibration.

So.... is it time for a new receiver? Or is it worth taking this to the shop?

Thanks!

Most of the time parts and labor exceed what the unit is worth and technology seems to
be making major jumps more HDMI switching better room correction and GUI/Remote.

At best when working it is worth $150..
So now you will have to pay to get it working..

Not worth it..
Time for a new AVR..

Just my $0.02...

Just realized that the wireless router plugged into the same outlet is shot too. They were all plugged into a power strip - but the power strip isn't grounded. Only a two prong outlet. I've been meaning to ground it- but just moved in to the new house.

Guess it really is blown.

PS. Did I miss something? I don't see the word misspelled in my original post.

I think you should replace it, too -- not worth repairing.

That's just samsurd2's signature. It has nothing to do with your post.

If it were a good receiver, I would probably get it fixed, but no sense in fixing an Onkyo. It will probably have another problem in a few months.

Get a new one. Not an Onkyo.

Hi DanMc,

FWIW, if you could do a (full)firmware upgrade - may be worth trying, in case there has just been corruption (slim to no hope). As for the router, maybe just its power adapter died or the reset/firmware procedures may do the trick. OTOH, this could be a blessing in disguise.

More importantly, if you have ungrounded outlets it could be a sign you have an old service/breaker panel. Problems with the neutral feeding the house/panel can cause voltage fluctuations (up or down) affecting each 'half' of the breakers/outlets in an opposite fashion. So if you only had a surge on a certain oulet(s), consider this scenario before more non-ONKYO stuff gets toasted.
