Subwoofer for HT Room - Confusing to Choose

Hi Everyone -

I was told I should start a new thread for this question. Sorry for the confusion, as I really dont like to start a new thread as there are many out regarding my question.

I need help choosing a subwoofer for my HT room to connect to my Denon 4308 reciever. My room is 7 ft (H) x 15 ft (W) x 24 ft (L) = 2520 cubic feet of space.

I really do not want to spend more then $2000 for 2 subs. I might think about going above this if it recommended however.

I really like impact, deep bass that works with explosions and gunshots very well and great levels of enjoyment, but nothing to much to overpower my room (2520 cu. ft.). My room is not acoustically treated.

I already have a JL fathom F113, but since I just built my HT, I would love to get 2 new subs just for my HT room to be placed on both sides of my 124" WIDE screen, then move my JL Fathom to my music room; as I know JL Fathom is best for music, but Ive heard there are better options for subs for HT Sound Quality.

Ive heard to go with SVS, velodyne, outlaw, so I am sort of confused. I dont know much about subs so I will need some help on this matter.

Any help would be appreciated.

WOW!

I just looked these babys up, and all I can say is WOW!

I did not know a sub could go down to 10hz. Isnt that something that inaudible, but can be felt though? WOW? I guess I will feel the gun shots in my body.

Expecially at the price they are now, I guess it a know brainer.

Thanks ABSiNTH

I was maybe thinking of going 2 pb13 ultras, but that may overpower my room. Thoughts?

Just get another fathom F113 to go with the other one. Easy to set up as one will slave to the other.

bsoko, he said he wants "I really like impact, deep bass that works with explosions"

JL113s do not do that.

You should never trust marketing specs from Companies, Sure sealed designs easily go down to 10Hz but they never tell you the Max SPL at that level, if it isnt high then you will never feel it anyways so its truely meaningless marketing spin.

I think 2 PB13s would give you the experience you are looking for. They are only as overpowering as you want them to be. Having headroom is always better then not having headroom.

I have 4 of the PB 13s and they deliver the goods in the frequencies you're looking for.

No worries dudenstein . 2 PB-13 Ultras would definitely own hardcore I am sure. I am a bass head so I say go for it. I would love to have two of those .

I am considering 2 PB13's also and my room is same size as yours. But might go with 2 Submersive HP's instead. I'm not sure which way to go just like you. Confusing but fun. Good luck

JL113s do not do that.

Penngray - Can you elaborate on this? I'm not looking to flame you.. just curious. I sold my pair of JL 113's for something better suited for movie performance and I was curious why you felt F113's couldn't deliver the goods.

UPDATE:

I have decided to do it with 3 SVS subs. Come some comment on some of the questions I have. There are 3 options.

Option #1 - I could get 3 PB13 ultras. One for under projector screen, and the other two right up to the left side wall and right side wall. But I think this may overpower my room.

Option #2 - I could get 3 SB13's. One for under the screen, the other two on each side wall.

Option #3 - I could get two PB13 Ultras, and one SB13 for under the screen.

The problems im thinking may happen when there are more than one sub, is if a comet in a movie is coming from the right to left, there is no way to differentiate from right sub to left sub and middle sub, so the comet is not going to sound like it is coming from right to left. Im not sure if you understand this, but does audyssey fix this? Any thing you know of that can differetiate/calibrate left sub/right sub.middle sub from each other?

I do own a Denon 4308 which has audyssey MultiEq XT, so not sure if this will help differentiate subs from one another; but was thinking the reciever would need 3 serpeate sub outputs for this.

Hello monstosity

LFE and low bass notes are omnidirectional. Therefore what would happen in your COMET scenario is the higher frequencies would give your ears the visual cues of the direction of the comet and the subwoofer would give you the visceral feel of the comet as it flies by and when it hits the ground. Just for reference, I have four subwoofers all on one sub out. Two HSU ULS-15 and two older 12" Velodynes and have listen to the scene from Transformers (know as the Ironhide Flip) and the ULF sounds in my room really does start at the front sound stage and appear to move to the back of the room as if a wave of bass frequencies went right pass our LP.

Speaking of ULS-15s (nice segue eh boys? ) a pair of those would also give you the performance you are seeking with the benefit of also being excellent subs for music. Or if you really want to go all out you could have 4 of them for $3,999. It is like buying 3 and getting the fourth one free.

One way to have multi-channel subs is to wire each speaker through a different sub and set your speakers to "large". Your subwoofer needs to have speaker level inputs on them to do this, not all subs do. You wouldn't be using your sub out at all with this approach. I would do this if I could, but I don't have the space for that many subs. Although it is widely believed that bass is non-directional below 80 hertz, in my own experience that is not true, so there would be an advantage for me at least if I could go this direction.
