sub woofer question

I am a mobile DJ. This is the equipment I am using:

QSC GX5 Stereo Power Amplifier
Behringer UB802 Mixer
(2) Yamaha S115V speakers
HP laptop running iTunes
Shure wireless microphone

My question is about adding a sub woofer. First off, is it necessary? I only play small venues (reception halls, gyms, banquet rooms, etc) and I'm fairly happy with the sound. However, if it would greatly enhance the bass response, I would be interested in exploring it.

So the second part of my question, can anyone recommend a sub that would work with the system I've described above?

Thanks for any help.

Since Yamaha lists the frequency response as -10dB at 55 Hz, I'd say there's plenty of room for a sub to add bass. Do you need it? I couldn't say, but I'd be confident it would help.

In terms of what would work with it, I think the safest bet is to stick with the same series of speakers and try the SW115V. It's rated -10dB at 35 Hz, which doesn't sound like a huge difference, but 35 Hz should cover the musical bass you want, IMO.

I'm not into pro audio, so I'm just giving you the sort of advice I've seen doled out here time after time.

Yes, get a sub.

Get as good of a sub as you can afford. What is your budget?

Fred - yeah, i figured the safe bet would be to go with a yamaha sub. i just thought there might be a really good off brand sub for an affordable price that i don't know about.

FOH - doing DJ gigs is a moonlighting job for me, so i really don't want to sink a huge amount of money into a new sub. So I guess the simplest answer is "the most affordable quality sub that works best with the equip I already have."

The low E string on a bass guitar is around 40 Hz, so you are missing a lot of fundamental tones with a 55 Hz cut-off. I agree with picking up the companion Yamaha sub for now. - Don

In that situation, I'd buy a used powered sub, w/ the appropriate x/over built in.

Hit the sub with the mixer output, back out of the sub and into the mains amp/speaker.

The thump and general impact a sub will make, and the lessening of the workload of the mains (they will sound better), you'll be pleasantly suprised.....guarenteed.

Go to a local pro audio rental joint, talk to them. Odds are they'll hook you up.

Have fun
