Can I just cut a subwoofer cable to get pos and neg wires?

Thread Starter
I just received my new subwoofer and realized they don't support the subwoofer cable I ran (RCA). They support XLR and regular speaker connections. Its an Axiom 500 sub. So I need to instead use regular speaker cable. Problem is the wires are inwall and the contractor is long gone. Repulling the wires thru the conduit is not going to be an easy task. Can I just cut the ends off the RCA cable to expose the wires and get a pos and neg cable or these cables are not 2 separate wires? I am trying to do this later tonight so any help would be appreciated. Its so tight in the conduit I will have to buy lube to get the wires thru. The sub cable was bought from blue jeans cable. Its their top BJC LC1 cable.

I would not run speaker level signals through a line cable. They're not made to handle the current, and I've read somewher (but would not swear it's true) that using shielded cable for speaker level connections can cause problems. AFAIK, you can get a connector to go from single ended to XLR, and that's the approach I'd take. Worst case you could cut the end off and wire into an XLR connector. Either way, you won't be using a balanced connection, and you might have to adjust the sub's volume control a differently than would be the case with a real balanced signal, but that should not be a problem. If you want to go crazy, get an rca to quarter inch adapter for your current cable, an inexpensive direct box (to convert to balanced) and a short XLR cable to go into the sub. But that's probably overkill . . .

Don't cut the cable: just get an RCA to XLR or RCA to 1/4" adapter on there (it looks like it takes both). Don't even need the direct box at all. Will cost you all of like $5 at radio shack, best buy, or wherever. Simple.

Look around at Parts Express, Markertek, Monoprice, your local guitar shop, etc. You can get XLR to RCA cables. Just make sure the XLR is the correct gender.

Wait...is the XLR at line-level or speaker-level? Is the subwoofer active or passive? If you're just sending a line-level signal, get an RCA->XLR converter (although you'll lose the balanced benefit of XLR). If speaker-level, then you'll need to send a speaker-level signal from the amp.

It's an active sub. AFAIK I thought this sub had both RCA and XLR line level inputs, but apparently it just has XLRs on this one. All you need is an adapter.

The sub also has separate speaker-level inputs if needed (again, AFAIK).

step 1 in the Axiom manual for the subwoofer

According to the link of the manual that m_vanmeter posted, that is not entirely correct. The sub will also accept a 1/4" plug. Or you can just use a 1/4” to RCA adapter and use your BJ cable.

1/4" phono to RCA female adapter was originally supplied by Axiom. May be gone now, so that's a trip to rat-shack.

On Every pic I found of the Axiom EP500, the only Axiom sub with a "500" in the name, the pics show an RCA input at the top left corner of the rear panel. Post your model # so we can be sure about the inputs and what adapters, if any, you will need.

Just now seeing the v3 on their site, without the RCAs that previous models have.
