I have run out of ideas and need some help tracking down a problem with my home entertainment system.
The problem: a steady hum from all speakers, most notable from the center speaker mounted above the TV.
- The hum changes in intensity from day to day.
- The hum only happens when the plasma TV is on.
- The hum almost completely stops when I touch the center speaker.
- The hum gets even more quite when I also touch the Plasma TV.
- Connecting a wire from the same place I touch the speaker to the place I touch the TV does not affect the hum.
The equipment: I have an AVR receiver connected to two large front speakers and one center speaker mounted above a plasma 42 inch TV. A blue ray player and a Wii are connected to the AVR receiver and all the input is sent via 1 HDMI cable up to the TV. A coax cable is split coming out of the wall and connected directly to the TV and to a cable modem. All components worked fine with no hum before I moved them into a new media cabinet in which both the center speaker and the TV are wall mounted to the inside of the media cabinet. Previously, they were both sitting on a table with the center speaker below the TV.
What I have determined:
- There is no buzz when all the components are on and operating with the TV off. As soon as the TV is turned on, the hum becomes apparent.
- Touching the metal back of the center speaker makes the hum almost completely go away.
- I have checked the grounds on the TV, the TV power Cable, the power strip and the wall socket and they are all good.
- All the equipment is plugged into the same power strip. Plugging the TV into a different outlet (even across the house with an extension cord) has no effect.
- Connecting a metal wire from the metal part of the center speaker to the metal part of the TV does not affect the hum.
- And AM radio placed near the tv also hums as soon as the TV turns on.
- When the TV is completely removed from the system (no HDMI connected, no Coax connected, just the power cord) and sitting on the floor next to the media center, a hum is still present in the speakers.
What is going on?!? I thought maybe this was an EMI/RF issue, except that touching the speaker makes the hum go away and putting heavy metal between the TV and the center speaker has little to no help. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
