this past week was the first ep of America Idol..
Been watching this show since it began,
But this yr watching it on the big screen is totally awesome.
The Pic from the 9700 paired with
113 Black diamond screen .8 gain is producing Idol like i have never seen before...

Its just like being there ,
The vivid mode is producing an amazing image,
and
we are watching again with the lights on....

Hello Fraisa I have been enjoying this thread and your screenshots. Can you tell me where you purchased your 9700 from. Here in Australia we don't have them available to us and I've been scouring the web but the 9700 doesn't seem to be as readily available like the 8700.

Thats because the 9700 is only available from authorized Epson pro dealers/installers. As far as I know it is not available for online sale. That being said that doesnt mean an authorized dealer couldnt ship you one.

I contacted about 10 dealers in Canada before purchasing mine from Consignia.

I am very suprised at the quality of the mount provided with this projector. it has an adjustable arm that allows many different mounting options. The extra bulb and longer warranty is great for peace of mind. I am not using the cable cover, because it's HUGE and ugly.
I quickly adjusted the lense and focus, and immediately started diving into my favorite test discs. The image is amazing. Avatar on blu-ray looks fantastic.
I am really looking foreward to dialing the projector in completely.
(screen is 120" - 1.3 gain)

Hi guys. Just wondering if the 9700ub is suffering from any of the same problems as the 8700?

What 1.3 gain screen are you using ,
Would love to see some ambient light screen shots

From your screen shot of dispicable me,
i would target bringing down your Brightness to enhance your black levels....
When you go to dial your unit in....

I posted a shot below,
The black levels are black not off white,
This shot my brightness is set at -6, Contrast is 4....

You should also mention that you sell the 9700 which has a much bigger profit margin than the 8700 - in fact, other than appearance and a longer warranty, the only difference is your profit margin.

One other comment,
Really appreciate your screen shots and you sharing your room with us in this thread...
...
You need to come up with a Name for your Room...he he

Edit....
Noticed in your shots that the epson logo next to the bulb is upside down...
That logo can be turned around.
Just push one side in and you can flip the logo......
you may have already done that...

Fraisa:
I notice that on many of the settings that the Auto Iris is set to off. Does this impact the contrast and black levels? The auto iris would make for better contrast or am I missing something? I have this projector coming in tomorrow and am upgrading from a Sanyo PLV-Z2000 and without the auto iris, this projector would have horrible contrast levels.
Thanks
Can you repost your dynamic settings also?
Thanks

As you see in all my screen shots I find i dont need help with contrast.

If i am watching sports sometimes i will turn it on..

The Auto Iris does help enhance contrast levels.
Depends on what screen you are using and your room.

Also the 9700 doesnt have a dynamic mode its called Vivid.

I actually have 2 vivid modes saved
1. For Sports
2.For Hdtv....

will repost.

Great, Thanks for reposting the Dynamic settings.
I have a small room that is only 12x12 with a 92" diagonal Maxview screen. Its pure white with a 1.0 gain. I have a 9 foot celing so I think I will use the extension this time. Any hints with setup would be great.

With regards to your type of screen,
Make sure on your Vivid mode to Drop your Brightness and raise your Contrast.
also you are going to want to have your auto iris at Normal.

When i post my vivid settings use that as a starting point then play with bring down your brightness a little more.
I would think you will end up at
-10 brightness
9 or 10 contrast level...

again will post my vivid settings soon..

What i would focas on is black levels,
I love black blacks,
You can get there but you need to compensate for your matte white screen.

I would suggest you get the WOW Disney Calibration BLuRay.
I picked mine up from BB online....

It will help you ....

The other thing you should focas on is Skin tones.
you want them natural but not dull.
also you dont want them over saturated...

I have some screen shots that i took and posted of the ateam,
first set where over saturated skin tones ,
then i worked on that and got them more natural...

Also i find with this unit,
It doesnt have the traditional red push problem,
I find it has more non traditional green push
thats why i put the tint towards the red vs the green settings.,,,,

Fraisa:

I am having trouble deciding on a screen for the 9700UB. Because of my room setup (built in speakers), I will need an acoustically transparent screen. I am looking at a 110" Stewart Filmscreen, the rep is telling me to go with Studiotek 130 G3 1.3 gain screen. The Da-Lite rep is telling me to go with a 1.1 gain 106" screen. Neither of them liked the idea of a gray screen with a gain of less than 1.0. I like your ability to watch with lots of ambient light. I do not have a controlled lighting situation during the daytime. Would like to have reading lights on at night as well. Help! Very confused since I really like the results you have.
Between those I would use the firehawk for your room conditions. Another to consider would be Stewart's new 5D fabric. It is a 2.0 gain screen and the extra brightness might help with ambient light.

The only problem I see with it is your speakers might be too close to the screen. The microperf screens work best when your speakers are 12 inches behind the screen. In wall speakers directly behind the screen will cause more acoustic problems.

The Screen Excellence Enlightor 4K screen material would work better for acoustics if speakers are directly behind the screen but it is a basic white screen so you won't get any gain or ambient light rejection from it.

You have to choose your tradeoffs.

Bob
