LG 55LE5500 No picture after firmware update - Page 2

From Canada, just updated my 55le8500 from 6.0 to the 8.0 via wireless. Took about 20 minutes, but updated successfully. Nothing new for us on Netcast, we're still stuck with You Tube, Picassa and one weather widget.

I am curious how this will pan out for those that got bricked as well as the reasoning behind the issue.

I had the same exact update experience going from 6.00.04 to 8.00.02 on my 55LE8500. I updated last night before I knew about all the problems. I did notice that there was a notice when the update started not to power down the set or press any buttons during the update.

At the end I was sorely tempted to hit a button when the notice of the new firmware available at the of the update. It was the same firmware I had already installed. The notice box stayed on my screen for a long time but it eventually went away on its own.

After reading about all the problems this firmware update has caused I'll be much more careful about updating in the future.

So has anyone successfully updated a 55LE5500 yet? I got my replacement TV all hooked up tonight and it wont even let me go into Netcast or the Widgets without updating the software. I'm paranoid as hell to do this update in light of what has happened to me and numerous others.

OK after new set arrived, we watched about 3 hours of TV then wanted to check out netflix, which required me to do the update. So not wanting to wait til an official release from LG I updated. For those that asked for the key sequence its menu, red button, enter 4 times.
update completed and TV rebooted..... Same issue gray bars. I dont know about the rest of you but its going back to the store and getting my $$ back. I did talk with LG and they know of the issue but yet the update is still out there. I would like to think that when one knows of an issue as such they would take the update down. LG you may have lost a customer. For those who can not take your sets back to the store, I will try to keep up with the latest news and try to keep you up to date.

Its simply amazing to me that LG seems to be aware of the fact that this update is bricking TV's, yet they still have not pulled it to prevent it from happening to others.

I'm not updating until I know, without a doubt, that this will not brick my set again. Honestly, I dont need to use the netapps or widgets anyways. I have netflix on practically every device hooked to the set anyways.

I think that may be the key, right there: When the set says "System Rebooting" DON'T PRESS ENTER! If you just wait, I think it would work.

As of 10:16 p.m. PDT, 10/12/10, the LG update is still available. (I am not risking it right now for my 47LG8500.)

Amazing, isnt it? How can they keep this update out there when support is admitting on the phone that they KNOW its a problem.

Well, I jumped in and did the update. Mostly because I have a new set, and wanted to be "able to return to the store" if I had to.....

My update went fine-- a 47LE5400 from version 06.02.01 to 08.00.02. With a wired connection, the download took several minutes - then got a "The TV will reboot now" message, and the TV rebooted- two times in a row, and then I got the silly "version 08.00.02 is now available". (which I think is nothing but really bad English, and should instead say, "version 08.00.02 has been successfully installed".

Having the netflix search option is handy. Has anyone checked out Vudu? Looks nifty, but the per-movie price is a bit stiff, considering REDBOX has places all over town rending new-run dvd's for a buck.....

UNscientifically, I have observed in the forum that most uh, "bricks" are xxLE8500 sets.... if you have a 8500, I'd... wait.

Dallas TX Area.

Pardon me (and I'm sure we all agree), but that's BS coming from LG. The tv update setup is very much "in your face", and the way the update screen is worded, most people will do the update. "If you don't update, you are not using all of the functionality available for this tv!" - or something like that (I should have written it down)...

My recollection may be wrong, but I am pretty sure my set did not reboot after the update. I was not watching it, but when I returned to the set a while after the update started, it was off. When I turned it on, it was a radio.

I wonder if the power savings settings turned it off during the update? I think that, if there is no signal to the selected input for a while, the set shuts itself down.

Sound familiar to anyone whose set was bricked?

My set definately rebooted and told me it was going to do so. The power save settings is an interesting thought.

My set did reboot twice after the update, the messages were something like this. Update complete< then reboot...tv went off and then came back on. saw the LG logo and such then reboot. then black or gray bars when the set came back on. Going to return again today and get refund. looking at the Vizio sets, better price, WIFI, more Apps.
Any one have thoughts on there products?

I bought my 55LE5500 on 10/05/10. It was working great..until... I downloaded the firmware and now I also have a "brick" as others have described. No, my wife is NOT happy!!! The media box doesn't even "see" the TV any longer.

I called LG's support, explained the problem and they pretty much told me to try things others have described on this thread. No good. They have a service man coming on Friday morning to hopefully fix it. I'm hoping he can just pop in a USB flash drive and reload the TV and everything will be fine. Am I wishing for too much? Hope not. Then, after reading further on this thread, I find that LG has not taken that horrendous firmware download off the system!! What is the matter with those people? You can be sure I'll NEVER download any firmware from them EVER again. I'll try to come back and let you know if the service man was able to "fix" the TV or if I still have a "brick".

Would be very interested in hearing back from people who have service scheduled. Curious as to what they replace and what version of firmware the set is on once service is completed.

I'm in total agreement with you d10man.....amazed that LG has not taken down this firmware update yet. My hunch is they will replace your "motherboard" in the TV and that it will be on the 5.x.x firmware.
No issues with my update from 6.x to 8.x last night. TV pulled down the update, rebooted into the update, completed the update, rebooted again, reported that 8.x was available and then was completed.

Watched an hour of TV last night without any issues post-update.

Update to my 55LE5500:
The service tech just left, he was on the phone with tech support and they blamed it on doing a wireless update. I disagreed, since a few of you it failed with a wired update as well. They did not admit to LG having an issue with the firmware update, no surprise.
A new main board is the suggested route. That will be ordered and i should receive a call back when it arrives. Service tech said that LG parts have been arrriving fast lately. He said he could be back early next week.
I've had the TV 2 months otherwise i would just return it.

In my mind thats a load of crap from LG. Outside of the fact that mine had the problem and I am wired, not wireless, if LG dosent want people to get the update over wireless then they should not allow it to begin with.

I wonder the CSRs' prime directive is to always blame the customer.
I'm with dano583. The wireless update was NOT the problem. Mine is hard wired right to the router. Use that exact same connection for updates/downloads on my Xbox360 and I've never had a problem. What? After their software downloads they don't have some kind of routine to verify it before it loads itself into the firmware? Doesn't sound like a very solid way to do things.

If I have to wait for a new main board I'm REALLY not going to be happy about it. I have several LG products and would have never thought I would have this kind of problem. Wait and see I guess.

As I said before...I'll NEVER download their firmware EVER again.

My service was done today, and I have a TV again. The tech didn't even try to downgrade the software, or re-flash anything. In fact, they wouldn't even dispatch until they had ordered the replacement mainboard.

My firmware on the new replacement board is 5.05.00. So far, I haven't found any differences in behavior from the (later) 6.0 version I had before updating.

I immediately set the Software update feature to OFF. (Menu, Red, Enter (on Software Update) Right Arrow (to select Off), Enter).

My saga is done.. hope everyone else's is simple too.

I'm assuming this 6.0 firmware is not/was not available for the 55LE5500? I checked for a firmware update when I 1st got the TV and it told me none was available. I was on the 5.0 software. 1st update my TV ever saw was the 8.x software and we all know how that went.

The mainboard on my 55LE5500 was at 6.0, was upgrading to 8.0. The replacement board is back to 5.05.

Congrats on your successful MainBoard install, but ......

Why didn't you have the LG Tech perform the LG Software/Firmware Update to 08.00.02 while he was there installing the new MainBoard? It certainly would have been interesting to see if the 08.00.02 Software/Firmware Install performed by a LG Tech would have failed or succeeded..... It would have been a big wakeup call to LG if an LG Tech performed 08.00.02 software/firmware Update install failed and "Bricked" your LG HDTV again......

I am one of the fortunate XXLE8500 owners that successfully completed the 08.00.02 Software/Firmware Update.....
Tech came by today and replaced the board.
TV working again V 6.01.05.

But here is the interesting part.
When he tried to do the net update it said no update.

So it looks like LG took the bad firmware off their servers.

And he did say that bad firmware is not that uncommon on TV's.

Hopefully the new firmware will be better.

Ill be back here for sure the next time I see a new version.
Do you have 5500? I have ordered 55LE5500 how is the TV? Dont have dedicated thread for this particular model, I read on 5400 one.
The LG technician came to my house, turned on the TV, saw the problem, turned off the TV and said, "The mainboard has to be replaced". Great..... He said they didn't have one in stock and the earliest he could get a replacement TV was 7 to 10 days. He had no idea when a new mainboard would become available. So, I called the place where I bought the TV and they immediately said to just box it up, bring it back, and they would give me another one. Boxed it up and took it to them. Came home with a brand new one. It is now hooked up and working great and no, it is NOT hooked up to the internet. Turning off the update feature will be one of the very first things I do.

So, I have a new TV (the other one was only 10 days old). The LG tech told me to call him no matter what the outcome and he would come and hook up his flash drive to the set and upgrade it. I'm not even sure I want to do that at this point.

I do have to say this..... I bought the TV at Conn's Electronics/Appliance. Those people have bent over backward to help me resolve the problem quickly and as painlessly as possible. I will definitely go back to them when I'm looking for appliances or electronics. Best Buy is right across the freeway but after the run around they gave me when I was looking to buy a TV, I won't be going back to them for anything anytime soon.

Hope everyone else who is having trouble gets their TV up and working soon. Have a good weekend.
