Purchase Quandry

I notice that the upper scale players decode all sorts of formats. Question: if you have an AV receiver that also has quality decoders, is this an unnecessary duplication?

I will be buying a new AV receiver too. If I get, for example, a Pioneer SC-35, why get a blu ray player that also does the same decoding. As a novice, it seems you only need a player that faithfully sends the blu ray content to the receiver, so your receiver can do the work you bought it to do.

Is this correct, or am I missing something basic?

Thanks,
John

Correct. I find that having the Blu-ray player decode audio and send it to the receiver in Linear PCM results in the receiver having less control with adjusting desired audio effects as well. Buy a decent blu-ray player that can send audio through bitstream and have your receiver do the work.
