PS3 3d gaming - any reason to buy a 1080p tv?

Get 1080p anyways. Some games are 1080p. Modern Warfare 2 its 1080p and looks great. But I suggest to take 55" or 63". I have a new 55" LED Samsung UN55C8000 and I want to exchange it for the 63" but Plasma because of size for a similar price! About PQ the TV looks AWESOME. And for 3D I give a 8/10. For Plasmas 3D I give it 9.5/10. This LED TV have lots of way to tweak to get a better 2D or 3D PQ. The 3D effect looks very nice.

I'd also advise you to go 1080p and futureproof yourself. The difference in price is not that great and there are some good PS3 games that support 1080p (Dead Space being another one). Also, videos and games that use side by side or top and bottom 3D modes should look better at 1080p.

Sony is claiming that GT5 will be in 1080 P. dont know if Polyphony Digital
backed up sonys claim. but just get 1080p and make sure you have
both 720 and 1080 checked off in the PS3 settings. if the game is 720 then it
should run in 720

If you're only buying the tv for games (that'd be nice) then buy a 1080p anyways. You won't always be playing GT5 and a lot of games support 1080p. 3d games don't yet support 1080p but that'll change with the introduction of the next gen consoles which in my opinion will be sometime in the next 3-4 years.

Yes the new Playstation and Xbox should be out in 2012 or 2013. Maybe even a bit sooner because they both know whichever console hits the market first will dominate the numbers game.

Well I have the different opinion. For 3D PS3 games, 720p is all there will be. Maybe when PS4 comes out, but not with PS3. Saving money on a 720p rig is a real and sensible choice. There is a slightly larger dot pitch with 720p displayed on a 720p set compared to 720p displayed on a 1080p set, but there will be no greater detail in that 1080p set - not when using 3D PS3 games.

If you want to futureproof this awesome-sounding driving simulator set-up for the next generation consoles, then you might contemplate 1080p now. Otherwise, save your money, get a 720p 3D screen now - you won't be missing anything, and you'll save a few $$ now - invest them for the 3D 4K screen with PS5

720p only. No point in 1080p since it will require an HDMI revision for 3D...IDK why people here keep saying you need 1080p to "future proof" it.

I can't believe in 2010 we're still actually discussing whether or not it's a good idea to buy a 720p or 1080p TV... No, future 3d games won't be 1080p but how many people bought a 720p TV when they came out only to almost immediately regret not buying a 1080p unit.

The reality is, yes right now all you want your TV for is to play videogames on your racing rig... a year from now who knows? You're only going to play GT5 for the rest of your life? There's no chance you're going to move this new 3d tv to another room and maybe watch a 3d blu-ray or two?

The Samsung 720 3D plasmas when sent 1080 packed buffer 3D content will downscale it to 1280x720 (720p) per eye. The DLPs when displaying 3D content display it at 960x1080per eye. If you want full HD 1920x1080 per eye 3D from packed buffer foramt you have to get a 1080p LCD or 1080p Plasma 3DTV.

So, if you're building this primarily for GT5, are you sure that GT5 in 3D is going to be all that? The reason I say that, is that I've heard from people who have played the game in 3D, that the 3D is "very mild". Supposedly, it's much more subtle than Motorstom 3D or Wipeout HD 3D.

While the game itself might be amazing (for those that like the simulation style), the 3D could be a huge letdown.

Brightness is increased when in 3D mode since 3D LC glases absorb a lot of the light.
The only way to play a 3D game or a video 3D program at 60 fps per eyes is with a display that can refresh at least at 120Hz.
If the plasma image was retained too long you would get motion blur, you need the screen to go blank between images to prevent it.

Well first off the bat, there are *no* 3DTVs available today (or even announced) that support 1080p60 in 3D. Although it is technically part of the HDMI 1.4a spec, it is optional and no vendor has implemented it. And, even assuming some new TV came out next year that supported it you have to be smoking something to think the PS3 could handle that. They are having serious trouble even supporting 720p60 so some 3D games are running in sub-720p res upscaled and possibly at 30fps. Only way you are getting 1080p60 3D is on the PC and, again, 3DTV Play does not support that yet. So for 3DTV gaming 1080P is not really any benefit. You will probably get as good quality on the Samsung 720P set. Although you have to expect, with the current lack of 3D content you may be watching some 2D Blu-Ray or playing 2D games. In that case you may want the 1080P. Plus 3D Blu-Ray is pretty cool. Might want to see that at full quality.

I am not aware of any HDMI 1.4a spec resolution that supports concurrent tranmission of 1080p/60 per eye content. See:
