The 'NEW' YAQIN MS-20L Integrated Vacuum Tube Amp Thread - Page 11

how did you clear up the hiss?
i didnt Song said it was normal if you put your head close to the speakers. Try different tubes tho ive read that might help.

I am new to tubes but after listening to the ms20l for a week i cant listen to this tube amp setup for long periods of time due to listeners fatigue. Anyone have this issue with stock tubes? I believe its the bright end.

I ordered a Yaquin MS-20L last week and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I am building my modest two channel system. Earlier this summer I bought the Magnepan MMC1 and a Martin Logan Dynamo sub. Last week I received my Music Hall 2.2SE record player. I am currently using a Denon 3200 as an amp as I await the Yaquin.

Since the Yaquin does not have a phono input I purchased the Yaquin MS-22B MM phono input to match up with the MS-20L. I got this today and installed it in my system to start breaking it in. All I can say is 'WOW'. Love the tone it has! My Norah Jones record sounds incredible and I spun some Dean Martin Christmas albums today too, and it just sounds incredible. I cannot wait to get my amp.

Glad to see there are more/new tube people joining the mystic.

So who is the "Song" fellow that keeps getting mention and how would I get in touch with him? I'm looking for a new amp to add to my collection but I'm looking for something more specific in tubes. Like the 300, 6L6(350), or 845.

In any of your searches of his amps did you see any of them with those types of tubes?
What are the differences between the two units? I know that the 100b uses KT-88 but I thought I read in previous posts that there was a sub out on the 100B. Looking at the pics, I do not see it? Am I blind?

if it's too bright give the amp and tubes time to burn in. what's the rest of your system, including cables?

Thanks for the link. It's a really nice looking/stylish amp. I'll look into contacting Tabnaac, I assume that's Song's ebay username.

My system, umm, well I've been collecting stuff for a while, so.....
Pathos CinemaX
Butler 5150
Emotiva 7 Ch
Dared VP-845
Speakers 6 pairs, from Klipsch, Salks, MLs, Swans, AER and Gallos
A couple of AVR's
A couple of Tube DACs,
A couple of Tube Intergrated
Couple of pairs of 350/6L6GC, 300B tube Monos
A few multi-ch Hybrids tube/SS amps. Think those are KT88 and one that's 12AX7

My cables are all DIY premium cables now.

Hi all, great thread!

I just ordered an MS-20L from Song, should come this week, I hope!
I read that Song says that 90% of the people who roll tubes in their amps end up going back to the originals...you think that's accurate?

I'm hoping this amp will drive my Paradigm Monitor 7's (efficiency is 91db I believe).

I had a hard time deciding between the 20L and the 300B...single ended vs. push-pull and all that. Decided to try the 20L as it's a cheaper foray into the unknown for me.

never going back to the stock signal tubes, i am using western electric/tung sol
6ak5. i have not tried changing power tubes yet but will probally try gl kt77.
i do have some eh 6ca7 that i can try.

Mine arrived today and am commencing break-in! Wow, built like a tank, even the remote!
Sounds very nice with CD's playing vocals/acoustic instruments. Seems slightly more detailed/less muddled in the midrange than my ss NAD. It has no trouble driving the Paradigms. It is lacking in the bottom end though compared to my ss receiver...not as capable of playing the modern/techno stuff my wife and kids like. I'm hoping for a little more bottom end as it breaks in. I'll give these tubes a chance to prove themselves after a little burn in. Might eventually try some others, but I'm actually pretty impressed with the way the stock tubes handle the music I like.

Does anyone have the Yaqin tube phono stage, and can tell me how they feel about it?
Mine has come in too. I ordered directly from China. I have run it for 24 hours now to break in the tubes. It is really sounding good!!! I sure have missed having tubes.

My 2 channel system now consist of the following:

Yaquin 20L Integrade
ShengYa tube CD player
Music Hall 2.2SE Turntable
Yaquin MS-22B Phono Pre-amp
Magnaplaner MMGW on wall speakers
SVS 16/46 PC Plus sub

I had bought a Martin Logan Dynamo sub which is a small steeled sub but it is not going to work in conjunction with my speakers. My speakers are only go down to 100 htz and the ML sub only goes up to 80htz. I thought if I bought something like the Paradigm X-30 I could send all information below 100 htz to the sub but after getting the X-30, I can't figure out how to hook it up from the amp to the sub since the amp does not have preouts. I ended up taking one of my subs out of my theater room until I sell the ML sub and X-30 to purchase a small sealed sub.

I've been spinning quite a few records and they sound simply amazing!! We had some company over last night and some of them did not realize that tube gear was even made still so we had to do a demonstration. We spun some 180 gram remaster Pink Floyd, Journey and some old Perry Como Christmas stuff and jaws were dropping! It was awesome! Some of the comments were, 'It sounds holographic', 'I had heard records sounded better than CD's but I never believed it, until now'. To see the smile as one person sat in the sweet spot with his eyes closed as he experienced Pink Floyd was awesome!!!

I am loving the sound of my system right now! Now to make my updated Christmas list to include some tubes for rolling!!!

Hey all. I havent been on the avs forums in years. Possibly close to 10years.

Anyways I started poking around trying to research speakers.

Ive gone back to stereo for years and just recently made the leap to a tube amp. Got a mingda mc34-ab as my first amp. So far loving it and even using my tv as a dac (as horrifying as that sounds) things just sound amazing. Things you never heard before suddenly are in recordings yoi have heard for years. Its like discovering music all over again.

Got a dac on the way and plan to do a opamp upgrade and see how I like it before I start spending money on new tubes. Still not sure what to do for speakers but I am looking at open baffle salk speakers.

Well have fun and if you are thinking about a tube setup go for it.

That's so awesome...everyone who loves audio and HT should hear a pair of Maggies with tube gear at least once in their life time I have my 3.6s paired with an SAS Audio Labs pre and some Butler hybrid amps. It's audio nirvana for me!

I have a pair of MMG-Ws in back as surrounds, but I have used them as mains before...they are great, particularly for the money. I used to love using them with TV broadcasts. They could turn sporting events or live concert events into a front row seat

The sound is too!! I own a pair of his monitors and with a tube amp, just fantastic!

So, when I get the Philly IIs and the Monitor IIs from him, we will see how it fairs with tubes.....probably not terrible???? <(^^,)> Ha Ha!!
So I'm probably going to buy one of these soon, but I do have some questions first.
1. I saw one guy had bought a chinese cd player and phono preamp, but It didn't look like he had anything to compare it too. are they worth getting too?

2. Does anyone have an idiots guide to using a universal remote with these systems or know if it's even possible to set up one?

3. I know it's in the search somewhere but I feel just need quick advice. I've used guitar tube amps for years (Mesa Boogies Mark 3) and am wondering if you care for the tubes the same way- friends always told me to let it warm up for 20 minutes before even playing a note, and with no standby I'd be concerned to just shut this amp off.

Thanks
I use a programmable remote with mine. The remote will need to have a "learning" mode though.

The amp has an automatic 20 second soft start-up. The heaters in a tube take 30 seconds to get to operating temperature, after that i don't think you can cause them any damage through use. From Song's manual:

Quote:

The amplifier is ready for use once turned on, however the quality of sound will peak after about 5 minutes of warm-up. For best results it is recommended for 30 minutes of warm-up.
Please shut down amplifier if not in use for more than 30 minutes.

Mine's well burned in now and the bass has really come in. I'm well pleased with it and my ss amp is now boxed up in the basement. I can listen to this amp for long sessions with zero fatigue, which wasn't the case with my NAD amp.
I wasn't going to bother to roll tubes, but went ahead and ordered some Voskhod 6J1P-EV's and GE JAN 5654W's just to see if there i any positive change. Though to my 45 year old ears, the burned-in Chinese tubes sound very good.

Ive had my mc34 for about 6 days but so far it sounds great.

It works with the universal remote however its been getting stuck or binding. I havent bothered to look into it. It has an actual motor to turn up the volume knob. I figure since its new it might just be tight. Give it a few weeks them look at it.

As far as remotes go I really like the acoustic research ari3g. Simple cheap and easy to use.

If you want an ultimate sound from your MS-20L, then I recommend the Tung Sol EL34Bs from cyroset.com (and with the GE 5654Ws). These really made the biggest difference for me.
mine is still cranking away on the original tubes...

been occupied with other things, so haven't bothered to roll others in...
Just curious, those who have purchased the Golden Lion KT77's, did you specify the Plate amp, screen and grid bias when you ordered your tubes. Ran across a site that states if would be a good idea if you knew this information to correctly match the tubes.

I'm new to tubes, but I had read that the power tubes don't make a huge difference sound-wise...and that the pre-amp and driver tubes are bigger contributors.
Dang, now I gotta buy me some new power tubes!

Power tubes do make MOST difference. They are working with large signals, and thus any non-linear effects in them significantly affect sound.

I have the Gold Lion cyroed KT77s in a small Musical Paradise amp and I am amazed at the quality along with the MSII+, it just can't get any better. The Tung Sol cyroed EL34Bs would be my second choice and in the MS-20L they sound wonderful.

Now with new speaks coming, I will be singing "I'll be home for Christmas" and it won't be a "Silent Night" either!!!!

Oh and with Grooveshark.com, the quality and selection just can't be beat!!!

I got hold of some GE JAN5654W's for $5 each and tried them tonight in place of the Chinese 6j1's. My SPL meter showed a slight increase in gain with the 5654's...about 2dB 15' from the speakers.
They need a little burn-in time, but I did notice what seemed to me to be an unpleasant increase in sibilance from female voices, and a little lower emphasis in male voices.
Bass was there, though it was a little muddy, and nice sparkly high's but so far the Chinese 6j1's are superior, imo. If the sibilance diminishes with some play time, I may change my mind but so far these aren't really an "upgrade".

I'm also waiting on some gold-grid Voskhod 6J1P-EV's, which I've heard good things about. I'm hoping they will add a smidge more realism to the voices, though the current sound is quite good.

I ended up getting the Golden Lion KT77's for Christmas and 4 of the GE JAN5654W's and 4 Mullard's for the other preamp tubes. I put in the GE's right before Christmas and noticed some improvement but on Christmas Eve I got the Golden Lion tubes and they made a huge difference. I should be getting the Mullards next week, those are coming from the UK. I can't wait to roll those in too.

After putting in the Golden Lion tubes my wife and I both immediately noticed that the music had more depth, it felt thicker (if that makes any sense) and the seperation seemed wider than the stock tubes. My speakers are Magnapan MMC1's which only go down to 100 hertz, but the sound coming from the speakers had a fuller sound. I have my SVS sub crossed over at 110 just to make sure that I am not missing anything. Anyways, the difference is quite noticable. I have really enjoyed this amp but it just seems to continue to get better.

It was a lot of fun to try different recording types on the amp to see the differences. We have a Bing Crosby Christmas alblum on MP3, CD and Vinyl. The vinyl sounds so much better, it is not even close! And I have a great tube cd player!

The Golden Lion's were a welcomed upgrade!
