So if your Sony BD player can play the files you have via DLNA, then you'll be fine.

I've used Buzz Player for the iPad on occasion... It does work, but again, the original files must be 100% iPad compliant (meaning MP4 / h.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio in either a MOV or MP4/M4V container.)

Argh. The reason I got the WDTV Live Hub in the first place was because I didn't want the hassle of trying to transcode/convert files to stream them from my PC to my TV via the Sony Blu-Ray player/Xbox 360.

So here's another question: If I run Serviio (which transcodes, I believe) on my PC, can I also have it serve up and transcode video files from my WDTV hub to my Blu-Ray player and iPad, regardless of format (assuming the transcoding works)?

Anyone know of the best (most reliable) way of streaming files (NOT THROUGH ITUNES) from a PC or Hub to an iPad?

Plex

Another question about my WDTV Live Hub which I can't seem to find an answer for:

I recently subscribed to Netflix (Canada). It works fine on all my devices (PC, iPad, Sony Blu-Ray player), but for some reason won't stream DD 5.1 through the WDTV hub. It'll play the video no problem, but with no audio when I have the DD 5.1 audio track selected. I get around the problem by selecting the stereo audio track, but obviously this is not ideal. I have logged into my Netflix account to ensure I am streaming in high quality, but the problem persists.

Other media files play just fine with DD 5.1 from the hub, just not Netflix. Is it possibly because I don't have the bandwith from my ISP to stream in 5.1? I'm on 6 megabit DSL, and my download speeds generally top out at about 650kb/s.

Any thoughts?

Obviously the one downfall is having to leave a computer running, but the fucntionality of Plex is pretty cool.

I found it to be the best solution after messing around with various options. Plex is amazingly good and simple software. I use it on ipad and Google Tv devices. Apparently xbmc is even better, but never got around to trying it yet.

Since my imac is always on anyways, plex works perfect for me with having the media server run on it. And it works with both itunes (non-drm) and non-itunes content. It really is slick with what you can do.

Add the drive to your Media Library.

Media Library Compilation
Media Library Compilation refers to the process of scanning and consolidating the
media contents of the media center, network attached storage, or an attached USB

media files based on certain metadata information (e.g., video files are categorized
based on title or release date).

I subscribed to Netflix for the first time last night. I shut down the TV, hub and AVR as usual with my Harmony One but by WDTV wouldn't turn off. I turned the TV and AVR back on and discovered that Netflix was prompting me to quit. I quit Netflix and shut everything down.

Now my hub won't turn on. I've tried the button on the front but no luck. Any ideas?

Hello all....after upgrading to the latest firmware, my Hub and SMP are both having issues with freezing (not suttering) during movie playback, constantly compling info and locking up while browsing folders.
I have rolled back TWO firmwares on both boxes and then updated to the latest, hit the Reset button, etc....still no go. Both boxes have become very unstable. I've heard that having both the Hub and SMP accessing the same directory can cause data corruption...Just trying to get some suggestions or thoughts from the forum

Yes, it's true. The WD guys never thought about the possibility of having two devices accessing the same volumes, and they'll trounce each other while trying to compile the library.

I believe the versions you will need to roll back to:

1.04.12 on the WDTV Live SMP **OR** to version 3.00.28 on the HUB.

You only need to do this on ONE of them. Those two versions above don't support Media Library for NAS shares, so that fixes the problem, but also disables the feature on the one you downgrade.

Awesome! I will give this a try tonight! Thanks WDFan1970!

Came home tonight and all Netflix movies on my Hub that were marked HD, HD with 5.1 Surround Sound and Captioning appear as Standard Definition with no captions, i.e., the "HD" beside the flix name is gone. Anyone else have this happen? Nothing at the Netlix Blog about this.

If Netflix has pulled its HD titles, then this is a huge step back. I may consider canceling Netflix. The whole reason I purchased the Hub was it was one the few players to have Netflix in 5.1.

That can happen if, for whatever reason, the NetFlix bandwidth handshake thinks that you don't have enough internet bandwidth for the HD streams.

Might not be YOUR issue, it could be anywhere on the path between your home and NetFlix's datacenter(s).

That makes sense. Thank you.

This morning the HD titles were back. Last night after I noticed this, I checked my Netflix app on my LG flat screen and all were there as normal. I'll chalk it up to a hiccup. I was fretting that I was going to have to shell out $100 for an Apple TV.

I sent a tweet to Netflix Help and hope to get a response. If so, I'll post it.

I've been very disappointed with this latest firmware upgrade. How can I go back to the last one?

For what I use the Live Hub for, it works great. I use this playback my video collection and the movie info scraper works great, the media libary feature works good with my NAS.

I just hooked up one of these in a limo. Works so good.. Though i have to say, the mochi background makes it hard to read some of the movie titles

Can't you simply set Media Library to manual for one or both units?
There's no Media Library option for that. It's either ON or OFF.

Get Content Info has that option, though, but it's not relevant.

Thanks. I presumed incorrectly Media Library just gave you the option to use Content Info... hence manual would be the same as turning off Media Library. I guess Media Library accesses the share for a variety of other reasons. I was thinking of adding another one to my mix...

I am considering purchasing a WD Live Hub but would be grateful for advice as to whether it's a good option for my needs. Basically, what I want to do is have my iTunes music library available to play around the house on a couple of Sonos Play 5 units. Also as a backup drive for my photos, home videos, etc. My thought was to wire into my router and set it up as a drive to access wireless throughout the house. Would I be good to go?

Thanks for the help!

I have a hub coming and I'd like a simplified guide on transferring a DVD library to it. My hub will be on a wired network, along with a PC with a DVD drive. I have 300 original (many copy-protected) DVD movies. What is the preferred way of converting these to files, in terms of software and file format to use? Then how should they be organized on the hub (folder structure)? I think many folks could use a step-by-step guide, if anyone would be kind enough to provide one.

Thanks!

I use a combination of AnyDVD HD to remove DRM, and ClownBD to rip my blu-ray movies to main movie only M2TS files, with force subs, HD sound and AC3 as secondary sound track just in case the media player doesn't support the HD sound track.

I use MakeMKV for SD movies only. However, I've done two BD movies with MakeMKV because for some reason or another ClownBD wasn't able to rip them.

About 50% of the time when I go to play one of my movies or TV shows, I get a "Fatal Error" and the WDTV Hub reboots itself. Then I go to play the same file, and it works fine. Any thoughts?
tim: I see that once in a blue moon... But it's less than 1%; certainly not 50%...

My player crashes are usually fewer than once per week now.
