Damian - I'm going to try to enable NFS sharing on my WHS to see if that will work with the Dune and My Movies and overcome whatever problem I'm having. I've been through your very thorough tutorial on MSS.net, but have a question. When configuring NFS Server Mapping, your instructions say to add the "Guest" user under the user map and the "Guest" group under the group map. I have never enabled the guest account on my WHS, as we do have other people (i.e., babysitters) that are allowed to use our computer (via a "babysitter" account I have set up on Windows 7). I don't wan't them to have access to my WHS files. I do have a special "Dune" user set up on my WHS with it's own password. During NFS Server Mapping, can I just select "Dune" as the user instead of "Guest"? What about the group map?

It is worth a shot. Also, why not enable guest but just assign a password?

According to the WHS user setup screen, when you enable the Guest account, it opens the WHS to any user who has access to your network. Can't do that.

Is your network open to the public or do you allow the WHS' IP to be an open port? If not, then you should have no worries if you are sitting behind a router w/firewall.

The issue is that we have a "babysitter" account set up on our main family pc that our babysitters are allowed to use when they're here. That's inside our firewall, but I don't want our babysitters to have access to everything on the WHS.

I still don't understand, assign a password to your guest account. Unless the babysitter has the password what can she access?

Here's a quote from the WHS help section on enabling the Guest account:

If you do not want to add a separate user account and password for each person in your household, you can enable the Guest account with no password to access your home server. This allows anybody to connect to resources on your home server.

Caution
If you do this, your home server is open to anyone who connects to your home network. They can access all of the shared folders and other resources on your home server.

I believe the disclaimer is from this part of your quote:

So of course a guest account with no password opens it up to everyone, hence the reason to assign a password

Well, that was a complete waste of time. I got the NFS all set up, and I'm having exactly the same result as with SMB. I can access the WHS over the NFS share, I can play movies via the Dune user interface, I can access the My Movies folder (where all the new NFS index files are located), start the Dune menu, browse my collection, and select a movie. But when I go to start the movie, I get the same URL error (except now reciting the new NFS path instead of the SMB path from before).

WTF?
So, after another day and a half of f&%*ing around, chasing various possible networking problems, etc., I finally threw up my hands and as a last resort deleted my entire My Movies database and started over. I left all my movies in place where they have always been on the Videos share of my WHS, with metadata still intact, and imported the folder anew into a clean My Movies database. Excrutiatingly long story short, everything works just fine now, with my original SMB sharing setup. Obviously the upgrade to the current version of My Movies screwed something up irretrievably in my database. Rebuilding it from scratch fixed everything.

What went wrong? Who the he&% knows? I'm glad it's working again, but peaved not to have a clear answer on what went wrong.

Makes me want to simplify my setup. This stuff's great when it works, but when it doesn't...

Can MyMovies also be used with the Dune Smart B1?

Yes, it works with any Dune model (and lots of other brands too).

is there a guide somewhere how to make this work?

hi guys,

I'm a big fan of MM on dune (and my wife of their ipad app'...) but always found that their default template was not on par with what we can see on yadis. So I made some adaptation from yadis templates found on mpcc to mymovie.

you will find 4 new templates as well as an how-to that i posted on the MM forum. As this is my first post, i can't link directly to my post there , so just go to their forum on mymovies.dk then go to "user customization" sub forum and my post called "4 new templates for dune users" is here (my nickname is Gugusse there)

hope you will enjoy it

I'm doing a new one, and as this post should be my third one, I will be able to post it here directly
post #529 of 939
As promessed, here's a new one. This is the first template 100% done by myself.

Quite simple with limited data on the screen (only the most important IMO).

Movie :

Episode :

zip here : http://www.mediafire.com/?nemlve6jif1o8gn

you can still use the MM link 4 posts above for the how-to.

hope you will like it

Nicely done Eric. Good to see the community getting involved with customization.
I'm feeling a bit alone regarding templates and customization on MM (there's so much that could be done), it's even worse when I compare my work vs the yadis community which is extremely active on mpcc...

Yeah, I think partly because yaDIS is very much Dune whereas My Movies I would venture to guess is more a WMC product (although I know Brian is trying to diversify from that). I hear ya though, would definitely love to see more community involvement in customization. Who knows, maybe you will start the revolution
post #533 of 939
I really would like to make things change a bit on MM. If only i had this power...

But I think that the bottom line is as you said : MM is not considered as a 100% dedicated Dune software, so people are not really looking at it (big mistake). I also think that MM is so versatile that most of the users think it's complicated, while in fact it's pretty easy to use and extremely stable compared to all the tip and tricks needed to run yadis or zapitti.

Brian made a really strong software, with many possibilities, and I really like his way of going step by step and realising only when everything is working flawlessly.

Hi, QNAP/Dune/MyMovies "Trio" users.

If you are successfully streaming movies via a Dune/QNAP NAS/MyMovies setup, I need your help.

I'm having issues with my setup. It appears the QNAP NAS is finicky re: structure navigation. Even after reading Binnerup's "Dune" update thread and trying almost everything I thought would help, I'm still having issues.

One problem I ran into involves creating a working Network Folder Icon on the Dune which navigates to the "My Movies" directory path via NFS. The space between the words "My" and "Movies" gave the QNAP/Dune duo a problem. I finally discovered the entire path in the "Folder" section needs to be placed in quotes ("") if you're using NFS.

Yet, even with this corrected, I'm able to view my collection in MyMovies but the system hangs when I try to play a movie. I can play movies flawlessly via the normal Dune interface, but MyMovies gives me problems.

I completely uninstalled everything related to MyMovies/Windows Media Center (I think, but somehow certain settings always remain when I reinstall MyMovies) and I would like your assistance in reinstalling MyMovies and getting it to work.

Can those of you with a working setup of this "Trio" please share your success stories? Specifically, can you share the following:

1. The pertinent/necessary settings on the QNAP (I believe I have both NFS and SMB turned on)?
2. The pertinent/necessary settings on the Dune?
3. The pertinent/necessary settings in MyMovies (Everything you typed if you are using SMB, NFS or Named Share)?
4. Please advise if you're connecting via SMB, NFS or Named Share?
5. Please describe how you created the Network Folder Icon on the main Dune page:
... a. If SMB, please provide what you typed for "Type", "Server", "Folder" & "User" (was "User" "Guest, Admin, Dune," etc).
... b. If NFS, please provide what you typed for "Type", "Server", "Folder" & "Protocol"

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sorry for the long posts, but I hope all the details will help resolve my issue.

I put the MM index in the folder "Public" folder (Drive N) so the MM directory is N:/Public/My Movies. The Movies are on the M: drive (Qmultimedia/Movies/HD Movies). The following are my results:

1. If I create a Dune Network Server Icon with the following settings: Type=SMB, Server=QNAP809, Folder=Public, User=(Guest or Dune or Admin- it doesn't matter) and Password=(blank, not needed), I get a screen showing all the folders and files in my "Public" folder, which includes the "My Movies" folder. When I go into the My Movies folder, the MM screen with the ten icons shows up. Clicking "Titles" and any movie will bring up the movie description screen BUT when I click a movie to play, the Dune will either boot back to the main screen or I get the following error message: Failed to Open URL (second line) URL: SMB:///Movies/HD Movies/500 Days of Summer/ (500) Days of Summer.MKV.

2. All settings the same as above except now Folder=Public/My Movies (or "Public/My Movies" or Public\\My Movies or "Public\\My Movies", ALL OF WHICH) will bring up an error message "Network Resource is Not Accessible" then a second error message "Cannot Access Network Folder" instead of the screen showing all the folders and files on "Public" OR the MM screen with 10 icons.

3. Creating a favorite results in the same Network. Error when I try to play a movie.

4. Using NFS results in the same problems.

5. I can play the movies with no issues if I manually maneuver to them via the dune, bypassing MM, entering the movie folder and clicking on the movie.

6. AND PROBABLY MOST IMPORTANT: In the main "Sources" screen is an icon named "Network Browser". If I click on it, I see a SMB Icon and an UPnP icon. If I click the SMB icon I see three icons: Dune, Network and Workgroup (my computer). If I click Network I see an icon named "QNAP809 (my NAS). Clicking QNAP809 makes the system search for approximately ten seconds then show an empty directory.

What is going on?

Somebody? Anybody?

I think one of the reasons you could be having problems is that when the dune uses smb it can only "mount" one drive so you can't access the index and the folders. A way to fix that would be to either move the index to a usb drive on your dune or moving the index to the same drive/folder as the movies. Then when you configure the path in the metadata section of MMC you can select the "highest" folder.

For example I have a media folder and in it are a movie and tv folder. When I configure the path I set it to the media folder. You could do the same with the Qmultimedia folder and have a separate folder for the index.

And for anyone new to this www.mpcclub.com has some great info.

Thanks for your reply, Manderson10.

I have two Dunes (bedroom/living room) that are never on at the same time so using a USB won't work.

My system was set up exactly the way you suggested (highest folder first on the same drive) and it didn't work. As a matter of fact, it is suggested by Binnerup not to put the index on the same drive as the movies as some report missing data.

I've spent two weeks on this.... If I can't get it fixed in a few days, I guess I have to switch to another program.
OK,

I resolved item #6 in post #535 - If QNAP's NFS is on, then the system cannot maneuver into SMB. When I turn NFS off in QNAP, then I'm able to maneuver via the SMB icon on the Dune. Directory is showing two (//) instead of three (///).

I can now create Favorites to the movies (and anything else) and get them to start via the Dune, but I still get an error when attempting to start a movie in MM.

I am positive the issue is with MM.... I maneuvered directly into MM with Dune (bypassing any icons) and tried to start a movie: No success.

Any help will be appreciated.

Here are the images:

I decided to delete MM completely from my system and NAS and rebuilding it from scratch.

EDIT: I just finished cleaning and reinstalling the program.... Same thing.... I can't fix it....

Thanks in advance.

Update:

I installed Yadis and I'm getting the same problem.

I now believe the problem is in my QNAP or Dune settings/firmware so I'm researching now.

If anyone has a clue, please advise.

Thanks in advance.

I suspect you are encountering the SMB share limit; although you say the same problem occurs with NFS, so I'm not sure.

Edit: it looks like your movies are on //QNAP809/Qmultimedia and the index is on //QNAP809/Public. Those are two different shares, so this SMB share limit will definitely be a problem for you.

What jmanderson was suggesting was that you set up one share, say //QNAP809/Movies, and have both movies and index under that one share.
