Trying to get caught up on playing via HDMI

Thread Starter
I have an older, cheap (excellent bang per buck) system composed of an Oppo 970HD and a Panasonic XR55. Unfortunately, the Panny just bit the dust and while shopping around for receivers, the ones I am leaning towards (1120k for instance) do not have multi-channel inputs. My question is this: What is the state of the world in regards to playing my multi-channel stuff via HDMI? What do I need to look for? When I looked into it years ago, it either wasn't at all possible or my Oppo just couldn't do it. That's why I didn't concern myself with getting an HDMI receiver originally. Fast forward to now and I definitely see the benefit to single cable connections. Would I need a different player or is it still not possible? From reading on here, it appears possible, but I am not certain. What are the key words I need to look for on the spec sheets?

Thanks for any help.

The Oppo 970 is HDMI-1.1. It can send any multichannel audio to an AVR over HDMI. For SACD/DVD-A it should be able to send 5.1 PCM over HDMI as well.

Virtually any current HDMI AVR should play nice with your 970.

I'm hoping that means the Sony SCD-XA5400ES has HDMI support with a Denon AVR-3311CI that I'm thinking of purchasing ?

Sorry for the newbie question.

It should. However, I have had problems with getting the XA5400 to work with a number of prepros that need PCM. For some reason, the Sony does not want to send PCM, but only DSD, to these devices and, of course, none of them will process DSD. In every case, the prepro manufacturer has made a firmware update or patch to make it work.

Just a head's up.
