I have the older PC model and it's pretty good. Audio is clear without any distortion. With an adapter I believe I can use the mic with the Xbox 360 controller.

Cheapest thing I'd recommend is the $39 MS Official Wireless headset. Works well, completely integrated, no wires. As MUCH as you play though. You really should spend the $129 on the Tritton AX720.. the audio difference in playing with real DH surround sound vs regular TV speakers.. is equal to the video difference in playing on a HDTV vs a regular TV. YES the difference is that big.

I cannot stress enough how well spent that $129 headset will be. If you really want to be cheap tho, I have 2 of the OEM headsets that come with the console. One white, One black. You can have them, just PM your address and i'll send them.

Oh and for anyone using the standard OEM headset that just wants to replace. Any standard 2.5mm 3 pole headset (think the ones that come with a iphone, blackberry, android, smartphone, etc) will work just fine.

For years I used my blackberry headset instead of the MS OEM one for voicechat, its lighter and did the job just fine. For surround sound playback, I used my AV system.

Yeah, I do play a lot but I like hearing my audio through my surround sound system AND still being able to talk to my wife. The simple voice chat headset is really all I need.

Sure, if you want to unload those "old" headsets I'll take 'em off your hands!

The best sounding gaming headsets are an 'open' design. Meaning you can still hear outside sound perfectly well, and outside people can hear the sounds from your headset perfectly well. So you and the wife can still carry on a conversation perfectly well using these headsets. You definitely dont want to be listening to Gansta Rap music in the office with open headphones/headsets on. You might as well be playing all curse words thru regular speakers, because of how much sound leaks out of the headset.

Where the bonus comes, is that the sound is much more accurate and direct. You can pinpoint people, footsteps, gunshots, explosions, helicopters, water, wind, fire, electricity, etc.. so many more sounds come out on the game from those tiny little headset speakers because they are so close to your ears.

It feels like I can literally play the game blind, the sound is so accurate. Forget just knowing theres a shot from behind, I can tell you what 0'clock the guy is at, exactly what gun he is using and if he is running up/down the steps, in the bathroom or on a wood floor. No bullshyt, all those sounds are very apparent and distinct in games like COD. The headsets also magnify the sounds that are much more important.. so things like booming airstrikes dont completely overwhelm you from hearing everything else.

Even if you dont decide to get a new headset, go to BB.. get the $129 AX720's.. use them for 2 weeks and return them. You will have a 1st hand knowledge of how much of a advantage they give you, and you can return them for a full refund no questions asked. Win-Win situation.

don't overplay how easy it is to hear outside sounds with open headsets. Yes, while you have it turned way down, or there is no sound currently playing, you can hear outside noise as if you're not wearing headphones.

But my wife has taken to just talking to me because of this, without giving me a chance to turn them down so I can hear her. At normal listening levels, I might as well have closed cans on.

question about the astro mixamp and Blu-ray audio in general.
Last night watched Hellboy and switched between using the lossless track and the DD5.1 track. I know the player (Sony S370) is downmixing the lossless and sending along the optical, and that this should be better than the DD5.1 track (probably 1.5 mbps instead of 441 kbps) but I had a volume issue.

Just switching audio tracks the lossless track was so much quieter. And no, I don't mean more dynamic, I mean I had to turn the volume up on the mixamp in order to hear dialogue when switching from the DD5.1 track that was at a comfortable level.
Perhaps I need to check my player's DRC settings? But I normally turn all of those options off.

I wouldn't ask, except the same phenomena occurs between my PS3 and Yamaha RX-V663 when playing LPCM uncompressed blu-ray audio (via HDMI). And I know DRC is turned off there.

Thoughts?

It's a marketing feature. It makes the sound quality so unbearable that it's not worth it for the slight edge that it might give you. You can hear footsteps just fine with any directional audio if you know what to listen for.

I'm not sure though, its kind of confusing. I would try and get one from radioshack and test to make sure it works.

Ty for the help, i can now talk using my mic. But now i can bearly hear other people talking, so now i have another problem. I was considering buying the astro mixamp/ ath ad700 combo, but i wont be able to get that till August. Since i only have 100$ to spend right now, and buying only ad700 right now wont benefit me, since im using the crappy dss. And i can't buy the mixamp because of it costing 150$. And it's impossible to find some one selling a used mixamp. I wish astro would let other companies sell their products like amazon, who don't charge for shipping or taxes.

Go pick up the Tritton Ax720 for $130. When you're ready you can add a different headset to that, but for now it'll do fine and you'll get away cheaper than going Astro.

Hmm. Those both seem like odd additions. The PX3 sounds like a PX5 without the surround decoding and with a rechargeable battery. The other one actually seems like a step backward from the PX5 in that it has 8 speakers and "booming bass".

I believe there is a system setting for volume level of in-game chat. It is not as nice as the mixer on the mixamp, but it may help you out in the meantime.

I guess i could consider the ax720s, but i already have my mind set on the ad700s. If anyone is selling a astro mixamp, let me know.

I thought the same thing. The PX3's rechargeable battery is a nice addition, but the lack of surround decoding is not so great. The other one just serves to undermine any credibility TB is getting with the PX5.

Ya, those headsets seem pretty dissapointing. The PX5 was a step in the right direction, but these new ones take a step backward based on their description. Cutting out dolby headphone is a mistake and BIG downgrade in terms of gaming sound.

Plus, listen to this marketing BS:

"...the PX3 has an impressive set of audio features, including Sonic Lens with Sound Field Expander that widens or narrows the sound field to focus on specific frequencies and Ear Guard with Blast Limiter technology, which limits the intensity of deafening sounds."

The TB Z6A is for people who think virtual surround sound is more of a gimmick than true surround sound. They have a PC series that a lot of people like, so probably why they're making it.

Is there an adaptor that will allow you to hook up any headset to the Ax720's decoder box? Basically I would like to know if I will be able to upgrade to a better headset eventually but still use the AX720's decoder box for chat and surround sound. Thanks in advance for your help!
If I remember correctly, the 720's inline controller split in two, showing 2 jacks which would allow you to plug in an alternative

Refer to page 1 of this thread, there is a helpful picture on the AX720's...

Correct. That's why I suggested it to Ghost. There's no reason the AD700 couldn't be used with it.

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend AD700's or a few other of the series, seems to be some build quality issues where one driver is louder than the other. Also the size of the beast and how it fits just wouldn't suit most people.

Just got HPX1's so I'll post my impressions soon, the fit is a little tight but hopefully will loosen up a bit

i completely disagree.... after thousands of dollars on portable audio equipment and headphones, the AD700's are still one of my favorites, especially for comfort and gaming..... as far as comfort they are completely unmatched by anything on the market.

as far as unbalanced drivers, i've heard of some instances of this, but only at extremely low volumes.

The only person that I can ever recall complaining about the comfort of the AD700s was Shin. He didn't like how the wing design fit him. I've always wanted to give them a try based on so many reports of comfort and great-for-gaming sound.

Check other forums. Are the pads suppose to be Supra-aural or circumaural? because for me they sit on my ears, but just squash them, which is not comfy and the fabric just irritates my ears so badly.. and I'm also positive the drivers practically touch my ears and feels like I get some static shocks or something similar

I've got them, it's not my usual preset but I've used it. What do you want to know?
Does it make footsteps in Black Ops more audible?
Yes.
It boosts the freq. in the EQ curve where the footsteps occur as well as lowers the surrounding freqs so it stands out that much more.
Do I like it? No, but it's a cool idea.

Don't trust your eyes, looks are deceiving.

I've had the X41s and now I have the PX5.
The PX5 build quality is much better, much beefier than the X41.
They completely redesigned the shape of the headset, the earcups, plus they now swivel like the Astro's do. All welcome additions.

The PX5 is flagship of latest generation of TB headsets while the X41 was the flagship in the previous generation. Why would you assume that they would be similar?

I'm a total noob at this, but I'm trying to connect a pair of low impedance cans to my Vizio via RCA audio out for use with my Xbox 360. However, i'm not able to use the volume control on the TV when I'm on the HDMI input, and the volume is too loud, even on the menus. Interesting enough, I'm able to use the TV volume control to lower volume when using component inputs.

Are there any simple solutions to this? (I don't have a 3.55mm jack on the TV)
Well i deciced to fork over the 150 for the astro mixamp. I don't want to get the ax720 for the decoder box to use with the ad700, because i don't want to have to upgrade later on like im doing right now, because im using the dss. Also, is there anything that i can buy that will increase the bass on the ad700? And what is a good mic to use with it? Because the labtech mic everyone mods on has gone extinct, the califone mic is hard to find, and zalman mic pics up to much noise. The dealextreme mic is my only choice, but just wondering if there is anything better.
