Would an extra $100 towards PX5 been worthwhile in my case? Or will I be fine with the ax720 until the die out, then upgrade and use something w/ the old amp?
Pretty subjective call there viisual. I think it depends on what u want in terms of convenience, sound quality & upgrade path.
I only had the AX 720s a short time before I went the astro wireless mix amp route. I can say that the tritton decoder box is pretty comparable the TB and astro offerings in terms of audio codecs supported. If you don't mind being wired I'd say stick with the Tritton decoder box for a while. I think formulanerd has experience with using different phones w/that box. Look over this thread & hit him up if u have any questions...he'll be happy to help you out.
The TBs are great if u want an all in one wireless solution. I had the x41s for a while and they were great for gaming...I'm just a bit of a picky listener and prefer the soundstage of a more audiophile grade headphone. If u don't mind being tied to the one set of wireless cans they might be the way to go (at least until the tritton wireless rig comes out)
If you want some wireless freedom and flexibility in terms of cans the astro 5.8 mix amp is the only option at this time. It's not without faults but it works great for me and paired w the senn 360 pc cans I can use them for games, movies & music with nice balanced sound regardless of content.
Not sure if I answered your question, but if it were me I'd play with the 720 box while I examine all the options.
