probably over hyped, over priced, and under performing... much like the game will be.

The XP500 is the same as the PX5, but completely wireless. At least that's what I get from their press releases and web site. Since many people, including several here, praise the PX5 I would expect this to be a decent set as well. And, the fact that you'll finally be detached from the controller is a major draw.

edit: After a little more research, the XP500 IS the PX5 with a bundled XBA Bluetooth adapter. So you could actually get the PX5 from Amazon right now for $200 and the adapter from TB for $30 and come out $30 ahead, over the 'standard' XP500. Considering the PX5 will probably get even cheaper, I think you'd have to want the MW3 paint job pretty bad to pay $300 for this.

I still use Astro A30s... I guess I'm not one of the cool kids anymore.

Yea, they are good on the go... I actually still use my Sennheiser PX200-II for mobile though. I just love the sound of them... but Bass wise, they can't touch the A30.

You stopped being one of the cool kids when you stopped gaming with us.

I have one of those break away replugs. Its designed so that sideways pulls on the cable cause the tip to detach and stay in the jack.

they were wearing BF3 astro's at the ea show for E3.

They'll probably release those speaker tags close to launch, or maye they're just for E3.

As much as I love my PC360/5.8 combo, it's still a pain in the arse cable-wise. That controller cable needs to GO.

What needs to happen is someone create a bluetooth thing that plugs into the Mixamp's controller input, and another that plugs into the controller's chat input, like that new Puck thingy.
Yes, let's continue to talk about BF3 and Astro products.

Glad to see someone else is feeling my pain, with the cables. I dont even want the Bluetooth thing, as its another thing to recharge, carry around and possibly misplace (same reason I dont bother using a bluetooth headset with my phone). Just last night I had my Xbox controller blinking at me, I swapped batteries.. then minutes later my 5.8 reciever starting beeping at me.. so I had to swap the batteries in that! I'm completely done with plugs, adapters, and things that need recharging. The less the better, atleast for me.

I just want a truly wirleless headset that gets the job done. Madcatz/Tritton why is taking you so long to take my money. Get 'er done already.

good luck with that no wires, no batteries approach. let me know how that works out

for real though, does the BT controller nub on the TB sets have a battery? Couldn't it just pull power from the controller via the jack, like the chatpad/wired headset do?

I read that is exactly how it works, no battery needed from the E3 preview of it I saw somewhere...

The MC/TT OEM wireless headset uses a single rechargeable battery pack in the headset. A 2nd battery is held in place in the base unit, where it is constantly being charged up. While its not a perfect "no-battery" solution.. its far better than swapping several AA or AAA cell batteries, or having to use a cord to recharge the 5.8 Mixamp reciever.

Its is by far the most "wireless" solution yet.

As far as the TB solution. I believe the original BT controller nubs had to be recharged on their on. The latest solutions are able to pull power from the controller. But that means that now your controller needs to be recharged more often. Not necessarily a win-win.. but definitely progress. I'm still not interested in using a BT adapter, matched up with a specific controller.. when theres a solution coming to market that will need no voice chat/controller adapter or plug-in whatsoever.

Is there a general consensus on DSS vs. Mixamp for getting "surround sound" into your stereo headphones?

I've read up a bit and realize that the Mixamp has higher power output but otherwise are there differences of note to justify the price gap?

If I'm planning to run a headphone amp down-line from the surround processor anyway will I notice any differences? (not currently a plan, just a foreseeable option)

I assume you mean the DSS from TB. The main difference is that the Mixamp mixes (or least lets you somewhat adjust levels to avoid an argument) the game and chat levels. The DSS solely provides the surround sound. So if you want to use the headphones for multiplayer and want to hear chat voices the best, the Mixamp is you're better bet.

If you are just looking at single player or non-chat solutions, the performance should be the same. The DSS is just the DSS portion of the x41 receiver. Some AVS members have tried the performance of the wired audio out of the x41 to the Mixamp and have found similar performance, since they are both using the same Dolby Surround algorithms.

Another thing to mention is that the 5.8 Mixamp is wireless (at least not wired to the AV receiver or Xbox), which is another reason for the cost premium.

Note, I've used the AD700s with the x41 receiver and they sound great, but the inability to mix the voice levels makes them pretty useless for multiplayer.

I did mean TB's DSS module.
I've read conflicting reviews stating that each has better signal-to-noise than the other so tossing that out the window they are the same processor and I would assume same sound quality (relative to headphone attached).

Chat audio incoming would still play through the DSS, right?
I usually mute everyone in-game unless I'm playing with my buddy and currently only he has a mic so we don't actively communicate, I just react to what he's doing really

We're on PS3, so if I go the DSS route I need to figure out some method of getting a mic to work, I heard the Y-splitter from Astro actually achieves this?
The lower price of the DSS, even with additional cable, is pretty compelling to me...allows more spending on the headphones

cool. I was just meaning that until we have things powered by "magicks" (wireless electricity is usually considered dangerous) there's always going to be a wire or battery involved somewhere.

MS's management of their "proprietary" wireless is a mess. I understand if you have your own competing product... but in so many areas, they do not. MS Wireless racing wheel? Discontinued. MS All-in-one headset? Does not exist. Etc.

So annoying.

Agreed.

The only downside is the battery packs. AA/AAA's, while more of a pain, are universal so even after a product has stopped being sold you can always find batteries.

I just hope they continue selling the battery packs for this headset after the product stops being produced.

The mixamps have better S/N Ratio then the DSS, but unless your using very sensitive headphones it's probably a non-issue.

I don't see how Astro's Y-splitter would work for chat with the DSS, because the DSS 3.5mm plug is strictly headphone OUT, not some mic IN headset combo plug like the mixamps have. You have to plug your mic straight into the PS3 with USB adapter I think, like this.

A mixamp would be a lot easier and less messy. You just run a USB cable to the PS3 from the mixamp for voice chat.

All I want to know is... are all my past COD peeps getting BF3? That and Forza 3 may just bring me back to Xbox... still in school, so play time will be limited....

Mmmm....dunno. I've never really been a big Battlefield fan, but if everyone else is playing it I'm sure I'll be a sheep and follow along.

It's going to be tough getting the group away from MW3 I think. Unless it really sucks, of course.
