Astro is seriously no longer selling the MixAmp standalone? I'm ****ed...

I just bought a used X41 for a good price. I was wondering if I can plug in my wired headphones (SRH-840 and HD598) into the unit and get better audio than the wireless headset.

I ran my PC360's off of my X41 receiver until I ordered my mixamp. The audio was improved versus the X41's headset. Once I had the mixamp I compared the PC360's running on the mixamp and X41's receiver and I couldn't find any audio quality differences between the two. I ordered the mixamp to use the mic of the PC360.

They still sell the Mixamp Pro alone. The 5.8s however have to be bought in a bundle. A shame.

At least I'm not entirely screwed!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a 555 replacement? It seems like the price has skyrocketed on that particular headset.

(overall it seems like I missed the boat entirely, After reading this thread a few weeks ago I had set on an Astro mixamp and 555, but now that I have the money to buy I can't get either for the earlier stated prices!)

Astro not selling the 5.8 MixAmp alone works good for me. Once the Warheads come out I should get a good price on my 5.8s

They said late spring/early summer on the Warheads, but I'll probably capture bigfoot b4 they actually get released...

Warheads have missed the boat, IMO. They might be successful but less so than if they would have gotten their **** together pre BF3 MW3 launch.

I think they ran into some sort of design flaw or something along the way. They had a definite release window at one time, and then for some reason it got pushed way back. I'm hoping it was all the emails they were getting from people stating they weren't willing to pay $300 for a headset unless it works w/ the next gen Xbox console.

I wonder what this is going to be (and if it will really be a deal). Any ideas? It's an amazon lightning deal today at 10am pdt/1pm est.

The 5.1 DH: On section at 0:54 sounds like a weaker version, which honestly doesn't sound like the Mixamp's DH, but it still showcases positional cues.

Now, if you didn't believe in DH before, you probably will now. Remember: At 1:08-2:00 is pretty much how the Mixamp sounds.

Since Mixamp 5.8 is no longer available for purchase, what's the next best thing similar to a 5.8?

The Mixamp 5.8 is the only 'wireless' Dolby Headphone device out. You can get something like the PX5/X41/etc, but you have to use those particular wireless headsets, and not your own (and undoubtedly better headphones).

Guys, it's not that Astro has stopped selling the mixamp 5.8 by itself, it's just out of stock. Astro now does separate packages for bundles and standalones. If you buy an a30/a40 5.8 bundle, the mixamp/headset are all in one box. If you buy the 5.8 on its own, it's in a separate box. It's still in stock for the UK because the UK version of the mixamp 5.8 has euro plugs and everything. Just thought I'd chime in to clear up the confusion.

This really does suck. I mean, I have a good setup now w/ my 5.8 and my PC360s ... but if my Mixamp dies I'm basically screwed.

Also, what happens to all those Astro full kit owners who lose their Mixamp? They now have to buy a whole other headset too just because?

This is awful. This makes it no better than getting a Turtle Beach solution (sound aside) since if a part goes on those you replace the whole thing. Except the TB solutions don't break 300 bucks after shipping.

Bummer about the 5.8 Mixamp, I was just in the market to buy one, along with PC360's.

Where are you guys getting the PC360's from? Amazon has them for $200 now, is that a good price?

It sure is hard trying to find a used 5.8 Mixamp. I was too late for 2 units that I saw, and all the others are being sold as used bundles. I just can't bring myself to buy the A40 headsets, they have many bad reviews, even on Astro's own forum. If anyone decides to part with their 5.8, I'd be all over it :-)

On another note, while checking Astro's Facebook, Warblade hinted that they have something "brewing." This was a response to a question about new products in the next 6 months.

Someone on Head-fi contacted Turtle Beach, and it seems that the DSS2 no longer utilizes Dolby Headphone like the first DSS, but instead use their own form of virtual processing.

I'd like to try the DSS2 and see how the processing stacks up to Dolby Headphone.

As for something brewing, I sure as hell hope it's a new 5.8 with multiple optical inputs. Serious Astro stupidity for not having done so by now.

Or how about an HDMI pass-thru w/ audio extraction and DH processing from the HDMI source. Marantz receivers can do this as well as some H/K units; would be nice to mix that functionality w/ mic mixing of the mixamp...

It would make sense that they have something coming out soon and that's why they aren't restocking mixamps. It doesn't make much sense for a company to stop selling such a popular product, unless the margins are very low on the mixamp and they make the money on the headsets....In that case maybe it is a marketing ploy. I just hope they have a new product coming out in the next month so I can order it before I start traveling again.

I use and would recommend the Astro Mixamp. Mine is connected directly to the 360 via an optical cable. My 360 console is connected to my TV via HDMI, so I can also choose to hear audio on the TV if I want to game without headphones (which is not often, I almost always game with headphones).

Connecting to the TV is also doable but use caution. Some TVs do not pass a Dolby Digital signal through the optical output, and the listening experience will be noticeably poorer if this is the case.

To anyone with experience with the Beyerdynamics.
I've been reading this thread about which headphones to try and am split between the DT880 and DT990, it seems like the majority prefer the DT990 but my concern is the strong treble and bass, I'm more used to balanced headphones but then again I've never had hi end headphones before.

I intend to use them only for gaming and blu rays but I dont play fps except third person like Gears of War, Resident Evil and such, I like RPG's with a lot of dialogue as well, would the DT990's treble and bass be too heavy?

I'd probably go with 600 ohms of which ever I pick since apparently they're better?
