Everyone that is complaining about Astro not selling the Mixamp 5.8 standalone anymore, go to Astro's site and hover over products. Click view all then click the Mixamp 5.8. It will go to a link that shows in stock and still allows you to add it to your cart. I don't know if the order will go through but doesn't hurt to try.

I'd post the direct link but I'm not allowed to. I'm browsing the site from America so it shouldn't be confusing me with UK.

I see what you're saying. The page does say In Stock, but also has the disclaimer that it's only sold in a bundle now. I will try and see if I can checkout.

Hey Jchin...I just did the same chat with Douglas. I told him that I was able to add the 5.8 to my shopping cart, and if I order will it go through? He said it probably won't work, but I can try. I wonder what's going on, new product???

I ask that question as well and the respond was no new replacement product for Mixamp 5.8. IMO not selling the Mixamp 5.8 by itself is causing them to lose $$$, I wanted to by two.

my 1st post here
excellent thread (i have already spent hours reading through this and other threads) and very helpful although i do have a couple questions

i have not used a headset for gaming, but have decided to go that route to reduce the wifes moaning

i am looking for a closed headset with surround sound
mainly for CoD series on the xbox but also for a bit of PC gaming (when Diablo3 comes out)
would like to keep the price below $200 but if really needed could push it to $250
rather go for wired

so my options seem to be:
  1. Tritton AX720 - from what i have read seems to be the best bang for buck and a good set to start on - the dolby headphone unit would be compatible with other headsets if i do decide to upgrade later on, correct?
  2. Mixamp with a headset - but what headset would be best for around $70 (as mentioned before could go to $120) Siberia V2? any other to consider?

how is the tritton dolby unit compared to the mixamp?

thanks in advance

Hi scott128, did you get confirmation that the order went through? It appears limited quantities of Mixamp 5.8 is available to purchase posted yesterday via Astrogaming @ twitter.

Hey JChin. Funny I was just about to post here. I did not see the Astro Twitter, but I spoke to an expert again today, who told me to try the order. I did about an hour ago and it was accepted. My order went from "Processing", to "Pending Shipment."

It seems that it depends what link you access the 5.8 from on their website...some say In Stock, some say Out of Stock - but it seems that once you get to add it to your cart, it goes through!!!

Update:
I just tried the link from Astro's Twitter, and that one works. Go for it!

The Tritton Box is the same as the Mixamp, only a bit hissier. it's not a big problem when you're gaming as you're busy paying attention to the actual game sounds, not the hiss.

The AX720 is a good starting point, and it isolates incredibly well for a closed headset.

If you wanted the Mixamp, the Creative Aurvana Live is a great headphone near that price range, though it doesn't come with a mic. it keeps noise from leaking OUT well enough. But it's about as good as an open headphone when it comes to keeping outside noises in, which honestly shouldn't really be an issue unless you live in a zoo.

thanks for that man, rather stick to a headset than go for headphones so i will go for the trittons, thx again

Just pulled the trigger on a Mixamp 5.8 too -- hopefully the next best thing doesn't come out right away, but if it does I figure there will be a market for the 5.8 for a while.

Yeah, silly me forgot to order a chat cable though, so I am trying to get that added...either way though, should be pretty nice. I am hoping it works well with my Shure E3C, but if not then I will just order a pair of 595s from E-Bay once I find a good deal.

just got the mixamp and pc360 setup going and started playing bf3. the first thing that jumped out to me, besides the excellent sound quality, is the fact that im not getting accurate directional sound, and i dont thing anything is channeling sounds behind me at all. if a heli is in the area its sounds like its behind me, so i turn around and nothing there. and after turning around it sounds like its behind me again so im back to where i started. i usually just give up and try to find it by eye because the sound placment is severely inaccurate. ive also been knifed twice in quiet areas and never knew anyone was there. as far as setup goes.

optical from back of 360 slim to mixamp. i am using the y-splitter packaged in the box with the sennheiser headset hookups. everything else is what youd expect. am i doing something wrong here or is just poor execution from the mixamp. dd is on btw.

Is your Xbox set up to output sound in stereo or surround?

Do the left and right directions sound correct? If not, the y-cable that came with your mixamp could be miswired. To test, you could try connect your headset's headphone cable directly to the mixamp.

Just ordered the DSS2. It has 5 SS pre sets, & you can change the treble, bass, mid range frequencies..

If anyone is looking for some sennheiser of 360's pm me. I have only used them a couple of times, basically brand new with box, extra new pair of earpads, plus desktop stand.

Can I use any set of headphones and mic with a 2.5mm plug direct into my controlled and still get perfect sound or does it have to be MS one? Cause the MS one I have sounds terrible and I only use of for voice chat.

Sorry for the late reply, but yea, I guess I was wrong at first. I had asked Astro when I first saw these posts, and I assumed it was the case that I had stated, and got a yes for that, but then I saw the reply and went back to them, and they were like, oh yea, nah we aren't selling it solo anymore

I don't know the inner workings of Astro, but I'm personally not a fan of this move. I think one of the biggest benefits of the mixamp 5.8 is its universality. It's not completely wireless..but the 5.8 signal gives you clean audio, and the ability to use any headset or headphone allows you to take even more control of your audio. 86'ing buying it solo seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot by essentially eliminating that big draw to the product. I dunno. Part of me hopes that this is some grand preparation to launch a new product, but I have no idea haha.

If you wanted to get gaming audio into your headphones, you would need to either connect them to your console's audio jacks or if your display has a headphone out jack, then you would need a 3.5mm to 2.5mm MONO adapter for the microphone you have to go into the controller and set voice output to speakers only. This would lead to crappy chat sound, and no ability to really change the balance of game sound and chat sound unless the game allows for it in its main menu. Plus, as you can see from my little writeup, it's a bit of a process haha. If you got the SteelSeries Audio mixer, it makes things a little easier, though beware that the USB amplification leads to background hiss.

I had to buy some iphone charging cables since my children make it their duty to destroy them at a rate of 5 of month. I ordered from monoprice and saw they had some headsets in stock. Did a quick google on the over the ear DJ style headsets. Purchased a pair just arrived today. Hooked up to my iMac, they rival, if not better than my sony studios. I'm going to hook them up to BF3 tonight and see how they fair. I'll report back.

No, they're not a $300 set but they're pretty solid. Especially considering the price.

Got my Turtle Beach DSS2. Does a commendable job immersing you in virtual SS.
The 9 equalizer & 6 SS pre sets are noticeable. & Some combinations mesh together very well. Here is the list

1.Surround Sound Angle
Front Angle 30 degrees
Rear Angle 105 degrees

2. Front Angle 45 degrees
Rear Angle 120 degrees

3. Front Angle 45 degrees
Rear Angle 135 degrees

4. Front Angle 60 degrees
Rear Angle 120 degrees

5. Front Angle 60 degrees
Rear Angle 135 degrees

6. Front Angle 60 degrees
Rear Angle 150 degrees

EQ Presets:

1. Flat
2. Bass Boost
3. Aggressive Bass Boost
4. Treble Boost
5. Aggressive Treble Boost
6. Bass + Treble Boost
7. Aggressive Bass + Treble Boost
8. Mid-Range Boost
9. Aggressive Mid-Range Boost

Mixing & matching can be very effective. With the right match, the DSS2 offers the most realistic virtual SS I have ever heard. I heard Dolby Headphone, & Yamaha's silent Cinema, but with the options that the DSS 2 gives you, makes them the front runner in the virtual SS world. I can imagine the effects beeing ever better with headphones like DT880/AKG 701/2/Sennheiser 700 etc..& the ever popular AD700. These headphones or better will take this device to new heights. 75.00 is a fair price for the virtual audio, but the DSS2 itself is made out of cheap plastic. Very light & hollow. I'd love an audiophile grade DSS2 with an metal enclosure & higher grade DAC & amp circuits. Sell it for 179.00.

Update on the monoprice over the ear DJ style headset: Pretty amazed with my limited experience and sub par amp. I think I'll keep them.
