HELP! Need advice on short throw home theatre projector!

Hi guys!

New around here... Need some help/advice. I have a dedicated home theatre room set up and I am looking for a replacement projector.

I did have a Panasonic PT-AE900U that was projecting on a 108" x 63" painted screen from about 25' back.

This posed a problem -- first, the last row of seating was right under the projector (which was a little noisy unless the 7.2 speakers were blaring) and worst of all, we couldn't play Wii in front of the screen because the projector was ceiling mounted behind us.

So -- I've sold the Panasonic, and I'm now looking for a short throw projector.

There's a bulkhead starting 7 feet back from the screen which lands 10" below the 7'7" ceiling. It's about 12" wide. That leaves 6'3" approximately from lens to screen if I mount the projector on the close side of the beam. (that would be ideal)

The wiring and power is already set up for the ~ 6'3" short throw projector in the ceiling, but if worst case scenario happens and I have to mount the projector on the other side of the beam, I'd have about 8' total to the screen if I mounted the projector 10" down to clear the beam. Again, this isn't ideal.

Right now, my screen is painted on, and starts a foot below the ceiling height, but I'm looking at putting a fixed screen in place, so I can move the screen position somewhat, and can go a little smaller than the 124" diag size. (but I'd like to stay close to that size)

So far, my digging as turned up the Optima GameTime GT720 that would throw at that distance the size of screen I want, but that unit looks very cheap.

...So, I need your help! Advice on a home theatre projector under $2000 that is currently available, to fit my needs? Help is GREATLY appreciated!

Cheers,
Tanya

Not really possible. At 6'3" (75") and a 108" wide screen, you'd need a .69x throw. There are some projectors with lenses designed for rear projction with around that, but, you need to move 2 sections in price point up (over $20k section).

The most common short range is going to be around 1.3-1.4x...basically for 6'3" a max of 58" wide screen...no where near what you are thinking.

You are going to have to do some redesigning...

*scratching my head*

Okay, maybe I'm out to lunch, but if a sub-$1000 projector can do it (as seen on the Optima.ca website for the GameTime GT720) why couldn't any other manufacturer handle about 6'3" to the screen also?

Not trying to be difficult, but I've seen a few consumer models that can do this -- I just need a heads up on quality, and which one would be best? (ie: The new Viewsonics seem to have a short throw vs. of projector?)

I'm confused.

Do the math. The throw ratio is a ratio of screen width to throw distance. At 6'3"...75"...to throw a 108" wide screen, you would need a 75"/108" = .69x throw ratio. Check out www.projectorcentral.com and let me know how many you find...it won't take you long though.

The vast majority of current projectors at the shortest ability are 1.4x or so.

Projectors like the one you mention are geared towards a very narrow market...gaming on large screens in small rooms. Of course if you saw one of those compared to an actual HT projector...you wouldn't buy it.

Well that GT720 is made for gamers, it offers 3D, and it is bright. So why not? Well, if you are sensitive to DLP rainbows, don't get it. If you absolutely must have 1080p, don't get it. If you require maximum contrast, don't get it. But many others in your situation are getting it despite its low cost. The GT720 is a good thing.

I think some prefer 3D to maximum contrast and maximum resolution. As for me, I see the difference in 3D and enjoy it far more than I do the better contrast and resolution offered by the more expensive HT projectors. If I cannot afford to have both, I choose to have the 3D. Each to his own, thank goodness.

I have the Optoma HT66 now, because my room prefers the longer throw and I'll never carry it to a friend's house. Both of those Optoma 3D ready projectors are really good, especially if you want to game in huge screen 3D.

Oh by the way, my other projector is the Panny 900 like yours.
