Toy Story 3 (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review - Page 3

Watched last night with the kids. Fantastic. Some outstanding Bass--has to be one of the best movie experiences I've had with Buttkickers as the effects seemed to compliment the movie better than any other I can remember.

I did find certain parts a bit mature for my kids--especially compared to the first two.

I saw it in the theater with the fam and really liked it. Saw it again tonight on BD and all I can say is, Wow! Great story, soundtack, video; it really is a 100/100. I don't understand all the technical stuff, and my SXRD is old, but the video is incredible in this one. Looking forward to the release of The Incredibles, my fav Pixar flick, on BD.

Have a 3.5 yr old SXRD as well (55") and it was wonderful!! Didn't see it in the theaters so this was the 1st time seeing the movie. You have to wonder how they can improve from the original and even in this case the 2nd and they went above and beyond with the 3rd! ("Have to rescue the orphans"!!!)

I think that incredibles will only be 5.1 if you watch the trailer on the toy story 3 disk it says 5.1.

I also found it a bit mature for my 2 year old. He love TS1 and 2 so we were excited for him to get this I'll have to sell it cause it's a bit much for him.

Greetings,

Why not hold onto to it? My kids grew up watching the Toy Story films as well as others. While there were some films that may have had aspects that were a little mature for them that changed as they grew older. Many of those same films have come to Blu-ray and we all still enjoy them. My kids are now 18 and 16..

Food for thought.

Can someone point out to me what scenes were to much for children? Thanks!

We picked up our combo set this week and my 2 year old can't stop watching it. Visually, it must have the perfect hook for a 2 year old as I agree the story has so much more depth than the previous two movies--way beyond what a 2 year old can begin to comprehend--but at least they don't cry at the end--Sorry Ralph, but don't worry, I'm in the 100+ club too.

I noticed something very interesting today. When I came home from work today the DVD copy was playing on a regular DVD player and our den's LCD HD tv. The kicker was that the picture was in scope--~2.35:1. I haven't checked to see if my wife tampered with the settings, but the picture doesn't come across vertically compressed, so I don't know what is up. On the projector downstairs, the BD is the 1.78:1. Anybody else have this issue? (I want to check before accusing the misses of mucking with the DVD player).

As for the BD--everything is just amazing. The PQ pops off the screen. I even thought the opening disney castle scene was the sharpest I've ever seen. When we watched this in the theater, we saw it on a 4k digital projector. It simply did not do the film justice. The BD is definitely a must buy and the movie is one of the best examples of story telling I have witnessed in a long time.

The PQ on this one was spectacular. Even impressed my wife, who usually shrugs off when I comment on how certain movies look.

Ralph,

Excellent review Ralph; we're definitely on the same page on this one. Several of us on the Blu-ray PQ Thread have nominated this for the Top Spot in the reference tier and I trust it will easily be awarded this coveted ranking. Pixar has set a new standard with this transfer and quite frankly I can't see how they could ever best it!

I too enjoyed the audio track, though I see some are experiencing problems with it, most notably with the opening scene. Again, my experience was perfection, AUDIO NIRVANA, if you will!

Greetings,

Welcome (officially) to AVS SpellChecker!

Enjoy Toy Story 3. It's a real treat on Blu-ray.

Thank, Ralph! I finally received my copy in the mail yesterday and had to watch it right away. You were correct on all accounts; fantastic movie, incredible graphics and sound, emotional, funny and heartwarming. I had tears in my eyes at the end - incredible how an animated feature can do that - only Disney can succeed like that time after time. One of the best blu-rays of the year.

Hehe. You know as well as I do, once the lil' woman has made plans, they're set in stone. Best just to say "yes dear." Woody, Buzz and the gang will have to stay in their toy chest for the time being.

Did you also get the toy box?

I'm also in the camp that thinks the audio is a bit disappointing on this title. Absence of any real LFE was very evident in a few scenes.

No, I didn't get the Toy Story box set. Sorry for being misleading. I was speaking metaphorically, as in Woody & Buzz are toys, and since I won't be able to watch it, they have to stay in their "literal" toy box until a later date when I have time.

Having not seen this yet, I cannot comment on the LFE or lack thereof.

Who is saying it's mature for certain ages?

Regards,

Just to clarify: I don't feel the audio detracts in any way from enjoyment of the film, I just don't think it deserves a "perfect" rating. IOW it doesn't really add anything to my enjoyment either and your rating of 5/5 for low freq is a bit over-enthusiastic. Most LF is in the main channels, not LFE.
Ralph just finished watching it your review and score was spot on. The pq absolutely fantastic as well as the audio lfe was awesome. Family enjoyed it.

From seeing it on 3D in the movies this was so much better everything was perfect.

Wife and daughter sad but I had to stay strong, it nearly got me though.

GReat audio and superlative video. Great surround effects, big bass and clear as a bell dialog. Great review.

The movie was a bit too dark for me compared to the first two films. Not as light hearted as the others. Certainly, the least impressive story of the series. The kids liked it.
