Need advise on building my first 5.1 home theater system

Hi, everyone ..

I am building my first 5.1 home theater system with a budget $500-$800. My room size 12 x 17 ft. (My sofa 9 ft away from TV). I have some options in my mind and need you advices :

Opt 1. Denon DHT591BA -- $600
Denon AVR 591 + BA 5.1 speaker package

Opt 2. Newegg.com bundle deal -$500
1. YAMAHA 5.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver RX-V367
2. Energy Take Classic 5.1 5.1CH Premium Home Theater System
3. YAMAHA - iPod Dock for select Yamaha AV products (YDS-11SL)

Opt 3. Denon AVR 591 + Energy Take Classic 5.1 package
Total = 350 + 400 = $750 .

My questions
1. How much better in comparing Energy Take to Boston Acoustics Speaker?
2. Does Energy Take fit to Denon AVR 591 ?
3. Does opt 3 really worth the money or there are better choices for that money ?

BTW, I live in an apartment so I don't care too much about the volumn but care more on the sound quality. Any advices will be greatly appreciated ...

Opt 3 is better quality. Energy Take Classic 5.1 with a Denon AVR-591 is a great setup.

You can't go wrong with either option 1 or 3

The top of your budget was what I was trying to stay under. I also have a room of comparable size.

Here is the thread on it:

Using discount codes and cash back offers posted on evreward:

If you get a Yamaha 365 and the lower cost dock with coupon code "OCT5" at electronics expo that will put you back about $231.

Then get two pairs of the Infinity P162 plus the PC250 at Crutchfield using the various codes for $20 off from Visa and Mastercard, plus the $25 gift card code.

Then get a V1220 from Teamstore.(I know, an odd place to buy a subwoofer, but they have a great price). You might be able to get $15% with free shipping for just going to the site the first few times. (That is what I did). Otherwise one of the off 20% codes or sign up for their email list to get 15% off with free shipping. The 15% off with free shipping is the lowest price you will find on the site, because the thing does cost a few bucks to ship.

Sign up for Mr.Rebates, you will get 7% at teamstore. Plus for signing up for Mr.Rebates, you get 7.50 sign-up bonus.

With the cashback and coupons, that should put you at just about below 800.

You can also shave 25 bucks off by getting the Yamaha 367 refurbished form TigerDirect using the Visa discount link you will find at evreward. Although TigerDirect says the refurbished unit has a 24 month warranty, I am skeptical and inquired about it. They will be emailing me. I would tend to think the warranty should be a year though, so you still have protection.

Yes, I know this is aggressive shopping, but it DOES meet your upper price point of $800.

Now if you want to spend less, you obviously have come up with several choices that people can give you input on.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.
Never know there are so many options to get discount ..

I checked out the current price of the speaker set at Crutchfield without discounts :
Infinity P162 x 4 = $85 x4 = $340
Infinity PC 250 = $150
BIC-V1220 = $170-190
Total about $670 .

I see your strategy was to get the possible high end speaker and stay low on the receiver which I think pretty make sense.

I never tried Infinity but I found a deal of Infinity TSS-500CHR High-Performance, 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System at Amazon for $520 .

Does it look like a good deal, can it beat Energy Take Classic 5.1 ?
I would try to see it at Busy Buy this weekend.

Again, thanks for the recommendation.

I don't know about the infinity system. If you search the forum for info, you will find a few posts. I do know that B&H, an excellent vendor, has the Infinity for about 452 shipped.

Two questions: how long are you going to stay in an apartment and do you have people below you?

If you are going to be in an apartment for a while where people live below you, maybe a smaller sub like the BIC V1020 might be okay since you might not be "cranking" it.

Good luck and enjoy!

There are people living below me in my apartment. So guess I better take a front-firing sub to be more "neighbour friendly" ...

And you are right , B&H is selling infinity TSS-500 package for $400 + shipping. Thanks for sharing the info.

I will make a call after listen to them in Best Buy this weekend.

I have decided to go with Energy Take speakers after listening them in the store...

The undetermined part now is on the receiver. A friend recommended Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K 7-Channel Home Theater Receiver, which is a popular sell in Amazon and it is 7.1.

My original thought was Denon AVR 591 which is only 5.1 and both of them have the same price tag ($350) . Any suggestions between the two and which one works better with Energy Take classic 5.1 speakers ?

Appreciate it !

If you want 7.1 I would spend the extra $50 on the Denon AVR-1611, Its the AVR-591 with 7.1

If you don't need a 3d video capable receiver the Pioneer VSX-1019 is a great first receiver at $350
