Has anyone had any hands-on experience with this compact PC as far as it's ability to play BD content without choking (ie... BD ISOs and BD MKVs) - served over a wired Gb network mostly from a WHS and sometimes from a USB HDD connected to a W7 PC on the same wired network

It certainly has way more than enough horsepower. The CPU is dual core plus it also has hyperthreading. If the Boxee Box can play without choking with a single core and no hyperthreading the dual core CPU which is clocked even faster should not have a problem.

My old core2duo laptop can playback BD ISOs without choking running win 7 64bit. So I wouldn't expect the Lenovo to have any issues.

I'm in the same boat. Looks like the promo ends tonight? My only concern w/the Q180 is the Atom processor for Netflix HD. May be fine for SD, but I'm guessing HD will stutter. Not that Netflix is all that important as I get it from many other boxes around the house. But, for MKV, BD-ISO and other 1080p local media playback, it looks capable enough.

Looks like intel/boxee is jerking us around on the HD audio fix. They must still have SoC dev teams if they are releasing new freaking chipsets.

^ My feeling is the only way this gets fixed is with a new piece of hardware.

So, is Intel Still Making Silicon for the Smart TV Experience?
Intel’s Service Provider Division (SPD) was created last October when the company wound down its Retail Digital TV business. Intel continues to target the Smart TV experience through various platform solutions for service providers. In fact, over the last year leading Service Providers like Comcast, Free, Liberty Global/UPC, Bouygues Telecom, Numericable and Telecom Italia have announced or launched products on Intel silicon.
So what products does SPD design and manufacture? We target Telcos, and Cable Multi-service Operators (MSOs), and Satellite with Media Processor SoCs. Our line of Cable Modem SoCs, the Puma Family, is designed for set-top boxes, headed and headless gateways (the primary difference between headless and headed gateways is that the headed gateway renders to a display).

and a new web browser on the chip

Why anyone would give D-Link/Boxee another nickel is beyond me... if anything we should be demanding the new hardware for FREE if we are affected by this issue and they are unable to fix it without new hardware since it is advertised as a working feature from day 1.

For me that is the why they invented the 30-day return period. I learned long ago (with a much more expensive projector) that you judge products as shipped. I returned two Boxee Boxes both times when the fix didn't materialize as promised/rumored.

Fair enough. It's also precisely why I won't be giving them any more of my money. The Boxee is not a bad streamer, the problem was that it has never lived up to their promises or the expectations we all had (that Avner Ronen fostered).
I still absolutely love mine. Despite the he audio issue, I still would put the boxee2 at the top of my list.
I will be onboard with a new version. The interface is what sold me.

I agree it has left a bad taste in many of mouths. Even for those who returned it. Hardware wise the vibrating case, silly remote and the fact it was a pain to turn off/on I could get past. I simply wanted the HD audio to work, the browser to work halfway decently and support for Netflix 1080p. Last I heard/tried none of them came true so I gave up with this generation.

Charles R,

Expectation is certainly a key difference between us. While you were anticipating the boxee, I was getting psyched for the netgear ntv 550. Well, I was disappointed with that, returned it, and gave boxee a go and was very pleasantly surprised

I don't have my boxee connected to my 3d adapter and its not so easy to reconfigure my setup but, will probably want to get a different hdmi switch if this actually works.

Guess I will, only asked because my components are in a cabinet and somewhat hard to get at to reconfigure.

HD audio dropouts and buffering with BD isos over SMB are what boils my blood about this device.

I know I get the buffering when I hear my 3 yr old daughter call me and say" Daddy, it's broke again" when playing Monsters, Inc on the Boxee and I have to skip forward then back again to fix the buffering.

Never hear a peep from her while watching the same movie from my Popbox

^ Daveyd, what do you stream your movies from? I'm sure you already know but just in case if it will stream NFS that will resolve the buffering issue.

HD Audio Dropouts... well, boils my blood too!

No question about HD Audio Dropouts bug, which has to be fixed, But can people select alternate audio like dd 5.1 to play instead of dts-hd or dolby tru-hd. This is what I have been doing when I use BB.

Sure we could do that. Maybe we could also downrez the 1080p picture down to 480p too while we are at it....

I don't know about others, but I more or less stopped ripping non HD audio ever since pretty much every player made could either extract core audio (DTS), convert to PCM, etc.

Not to mention that Boxee requires too many button pushes to change the audio track, there should be a hot key for it.

I've also recently noticed that it takes PGS subtitles several seconds or longer to "turn on" after enabling in the OSD.

I guess now that I have a 'real' HTPC I am having a harder and harder time forgiving the Boxee screwups.

I always include a secondary AC3 track since it usually just as easy and clicking an extra option via Clown_BD. Rather be safe then sorry (at least when dealing with media players)

Server 2008 R2 box. I'm having issues with setting up NFS on the server for the Boxee to see
post #9236 of 9554
I wish I knew more about Server 2008, but if you can get it figured out I know it will resolve the video stuttering issue and your kids will be happy and so will you!

So you don't see any NFS shares at all, not even an IP address when you scan with the Boxee Box?
I am very familiar with 2008R2 as I work on it on a daily basis...but not so familiar with NFS shares as it relates to R2. I have setup my SMB share to also be an NFS share. Boxee sees the NFS share but cannot scan inside it. I'm thinking a permission issue but I have the NFS/SMB share wide open
post #9238 of 9554
I am using a ReadyNAS, and had to enable read/write access specifically for the NFS share and the SMB share separately. Sounds like you are doing this already though. Have you tried disabling SMB just as a test, not that it would matter if it is a permission issue.
Just a guess...when adding the nfs source - did you manually input the IP address?

Should you even need to? With NFS on my WHS and unRAID, My three Boxee Boxes can access the shares over NFS by just browsing for the shares. Just like I do with SMB.
